- SSPink, on 09/17/2008, -1/+154If you reveal illegal government activities in Germany apparently the government kicks down your door and hunts down the whistle blower like a dog.
- Atomic1fire, on 09/17/2008, -4/+144And this was germany,
the same country that calls google out on privacy over chrome
hypocrites - z00k, on 09/17/2008, -2/+126.... I literally don't know what to say.
- humanerror, on 09/18/2008, -2/+105Pirate Party = Heroes
- DracoFlameus, on 09/17/2008, -4/+61Horrible. There goes the democracy.
- hyanakin, on 09/17/2008, -1/+56The "free" world is turning step by step into a police-world... we point finger at certain countries and say they don't respect basic civil liberties and human rights, yet we do not point fingers at our own governments that are just trying to become like those countries.
- DforSpiD, on 09/18/2008, -2/+42I heard they started that tradition some time around the 1940s... and I'm pretty sure there's a name for it...
- Borgcube636, on 09/18/2008, -0/+36...and now the Pirates are going to fight back even harder
- regression, on 09/18/2008, -1/+37actually, it was the 1930's.
- wolferz, on 09/18/2008, -0/+27We're talking about the Germans here... and that's not a dig regarding Nazi Germany ether. They have been one of the most willing among the "free nations" to disregard right to free speech. At first to protect minorities, a noble cause considering the history of the nation, but once every one is ok with sometimes taking away freedom sometimes becomes occasionally and occasionally becomes often and often becomes every day.
This is why, when some one advocates any sort of government sanctioned punishment for the KKK or the neo nazis, I call them a fascist. - nrox653, on 09/18/2008, -0/+27Let's face it. Most governments suck.
- inactive, on 09/18/2008, -0/+25Okay.
So in other words, it's OK for the government to do illegal things, because they're the government. Yay, democracy. - inactive, on 09/18/2008, -11/+35IN NAZI GERMANY... stuff like this happened!
Except without computers...and more Jews - Joshper85, on 09/18/2008, -0/+22So terrorism can't destroy democracy but internet piracy does???
So if Bin Laden would have just set up some torrent servers instead of the attacks on 9/11 we would have lost are freedoms faster then we are now.
Awesome - xaxxon, on 09/18/2008, -0/+18actually there WERE computers. Computers supplied by IBM.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_IBM#IBM.27 ... - theaverageidiot, on 09/18/2008, -2/+20That was harsh.
Get real. You can't put stereotypes from the past on the current generation. - JonForTheWin, on 09/18/2008, -2/+19A perfect example of why to not use proprietary software.
"What'd you have to hide?" . . stupid, *****, bitches, what does any one else have to see?! you sick pathetic government throat yogurt-swallowing maggots . . god damn - inactive, on 09/18/2008, -0/+17In my experience German people are pretty awesome, but the German government can suck my balls.
- FromFirstToLast, on 09/18/2008, -0/+16You think they are really looking out for their people's privacy? They just want to be able to see your private things and whats the use if a program isn't going to save them.
- p3ngwin, on 09/18/2008, -0/+15always strange that too many people believe "good & evil" are the same as "legal & illegal".
just because someone tells you something, doesn't mean it's good/true, and that includes people you've allowed power over you.
make your own mind up and live your beliefs, not someone else's. - wolferz, on 09/18/2008, -0/+12@norman619
Are you really that stupid? Free speech can not exist without privacy.
You say tell your friend you're Jewish on skype and next day the thought police are at your door step. Read 1984 for chrissake. A government which monitors it's citizens conversations is a government with the ability to take away freedoms at will. - treed, on 09/18/2008, -2/+13The debate here is "Should it be a crime?"
IIRC, Germany also had made being Jewish into a crime at some point.
(Yes, Godwin invoked twice already in this thread. How high can we get the count?) - DforSpiD, on 09/18/2008, -7/+18And the 40s aren't some time around the 30s?
- inactive, on 09/18/2008, -0/+11No, but you're missing the point really badly by pointing out that it's illegal to reveal government malpractice... Isn't that the only way the system can operate?
- jojopumpkin, on 09/18/2008, -0/+10How is the German media handling this? Are they giving it any coverage at all? If anyone has any links to the German take on it (in English if possible) drop them here.
- chaaalieboy, on 09/18/2008, -2/+12"Hello new Gestapo?"
- wolferz, on 09/18/2008, -0/+10If it had been illegal to be african-american in the 50s 60s and 70s... would that have made what the kkk did ok?
Legality does not define morality. Morality defines legality. When Legality is allowed to usurp morality that is called a dictatorship. Whether what they did was illegal or not it was still the right thing to do.
It's not BS spin. It's called common sense... something you seem to be happy to have taken from you. Does it make you feel safer at night knowing that instead of a one-in-a-billion chance of getting blown up by a terrorist you now have the government spying on you? What happens if the government decides something you happen to like, like religion or, if that's not your thing, atheism needs to be stamped out. - norman619, on 09/18/2008, -0/+10Where we are heading? Domestic and global communications have been tapped for a VERY long time. I am amazed at how soon people have forgotten about these two projects/systems.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECHELON
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnivore_(FBI) - madduck623, on 09/18/2008, -0/+9not tapping, raiding peoples homes who speak out against government abuses is stopping free speech
- Khast, on 09/18/2008, -0/+8They have to come together at some point. They start as a soundbyte...get broken up...get reassembled...and end as a soundbyte. Now saying there is a virus on the either host...would it not seem logical that it would be tapped before it was disassembled, or after it was reassembled?
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 09/18/2008, -0/+8I've railed against the governments violation of civil liberties ("Free Speech Zones", Guatanimo, etc, etc.) on countless occasions, but I've become to believe I'm in the extreme minority. On more than one occasion I've had someone ask me something to effect of "Do you think it's a good a idea to talk like that?"
I don't know. I think a lot of people have become afraid of their own government. Doesn't make much sense to me. In my mind it's the other way around. It is the government who needs to fear us. If we let them intimidate us then we've already lost, and maybe there's no hope for democracy after all. - inactive, on 09/18/2008, -0/+7It's probably more rampant than just Germany...
- inactive, on 09/18/2008, -1/+8Problem is, Morality isn't really what most people think it is. Morality is societies opinion at best - For example, Currently, gays aren't immoral, Women do not have to be housewifes and can own their own land, but that wasn't always true... And even issues still going on today are pure examples of things that are considered immoral by almost everyone yet appear to be yet another pointless double standard.
rogerse: The rules of society are crap. Society has crappy, crappy standards. They classify you depending upon your appearance and then they treat you according to classification. And then there are just random things considered immoral... and you can guess where i'm going with that. - briguymaine, on 09/18/2008, -0/+7I'll be there on Sunday, I'll ask what's up.
- trogdor282, on 09/18/2008, -1/+8Luckily no real harm was done as the raid was conducted by Colonel Klink.
- bluesnowmonkey, on 09/18/2008, -2/+8And then fewer Jews.
- monkeyhoward, on 09/18/2008, -1/+7***** this. Why don't we have a Pirate Party?
You think I'm joking? I'm dead serious.
If ever there were a time that there needed to be a Pirate Party in the US, it is right now.
Our pot-o-***** needs a serious stirring up.
I salute the German Pirate Party. - emt1451, on 09/18/2008, -1/+7that is so cool that the server was encrypted and the even the government probably won't be able to get in
- geodescent, on 09/18/2008, -1/+7I say we nuke them from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
- hyanakin, on 09/18/2008, -0/+6You got one in the US... even some sections in various states:
http://www.pirate-party.us/ - hyanakin, on 09/18/2008, -0/+5There has been some coverage on some German news sites.
- Khast, on 09/18/2008, -1/+6May I have permission to don the tinfoil hat?....
Sheesh, it doesn't matter where you go, you ain't going to get away from Big Brother. Pretty soon we will have a global moderator on everything we say... - xaxxon, on 09/18/2008, -0/+4They already did. We're right behind them - you just can't see us.
- spaceman77, on 09/18/2008, -1/+5I don't know wether to call them Stasi or Gestapo
- inactive, on 09/18/2008, -0/+4Bring me pancakes. Those Germans are good at makin' pancakes.
- blackwinged, on 09/18/2008, -1/+4Actually this is the work of the bavarian minister, Mr Schäuble.
If he isn´t stopped soon, this can happen anytime to anyone.
This man kicks human rights with his feet - even from his wheelchair -.- - dixhuit, on 09/18/2008, -0/+3I'm dearly sorry, but that is total balls.
I used to own a VW Golf MkIV and it had THE BEST cup holders I've ever seen. - scarwars, on 09/18/2008, -1/+4pirates, nazi's, trojan horses.. sounds like a really bad Rutger Hauer flick.
(which by definition makes it a cult classic..) - cgbspender, on 09/18/2008, -0/+3Of course most of the media does not cover it.
