- Shogi, on 06/30/2009, -2/+75FTA: "Peter responded that they think the concept is “super funny” and that’s one of the main reasons they are doing this."
They did it for the lulz. - Nephlabobo, on 06/30/2009, -6/+67Sellout.
I can't believe I'm typing this but
***** the Pirate Bay - linuxzap, on 06/30/2009, -1/+513.14% of Sailors are Pi Rates.
- Presbyterian, on 06/30/2009, -4/+41My shirt says "Hope" and "change".Now you know how I feel.
- shulkman, on 06/30/2009, -1/+37Nah, this really doesn't sound good.
“I’m agnostic about it, I think it could be true, could be faulty, but whatever happens at least something happens, which is the big thing here. I’d rather see The Pirate Bay die in a chance of becoming better, than just dying.” Peter Sunde
Even TPB is admitting the possibility of the death of the site.
June 30, 2009 ~ The day the music died. - Daerion, on 06/30/2009, -1/+34If TPB can somehow manage to become what the industry has thus far failed to produce, namely a portal where people can get stuff for reasonable prices, quickly, free of DRM and other ***** while at the same time reimbursing the artists and other creators of said content in a fair manner then that'd be one of the best things to grace the interwebs for quite a long time (even though I'm certain a lot of the "I want it all and I want it for free" crowd will disagree).
However, that's one big ass "if" right there and I'm afraid this is going to turn into Napster v2 :/
- a long time TPB user - JasonHaley, on 06/30/2009, -2/+35Here I am at my keyboard wearing a TPB shirt (the one with the tape record and bones) and my pirate hat I made from construction paper... feeling like an IDIOT that I believed in this cause!
I'd cry but my eye patch is getting soaked. - Presbyterian, on 06/30/2009, -1/+24Yes.
- mogebier, on 06/30/2009, -0/+23The other thing users of TPB have to fear is if their trackers also kept a list of IP addresses.
They might sell that too, for a price. - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -1/+22yes
- theavenger2, on 06/30/2009, -2/+22Or the money but their deluded fans will spin anything possible in their favor.
- Shogi, on 06/30/2009, -1/+19Hahahaha, you just got trolled bitch.
- EVILTHETURTLE, on 06/30/2009, -1/+18Yes.
- mysticmatrix, on 06/30/2009, -1/+18Let's withhold our judgment till deal is done. For now, this thing can go either ways.... to becoming turning point in Filesharing and copyright as we know, or simply death of the biggest project taken yet!
- Endrian, on 06/30/2009, -1/+17Yes.
- davidwasman, on 06/30/2009, -1/+17Devastated isn't even the right word for how I feel about all of this. This, for the uninitiated, is going to have rippling negative consequences for file-sharing, as a whole.
I was a Napster admin(during the heydays), prior to it being sold. They promised everyone nothing would change...we see how wrong they were, now.
RIP TPB - RiotHeart, on 06/30/2009, -0/+15I died a little inside
- diggforworld, on 06/30/2009, -1/+15The site's future is now ruined...
- TDDebug, on 06/30/2009, -0/+14Torrents aren't dead. There are plenty of other better quality trackers out there.
- beelz, on 06/30/2009, -0/+14Suprnova all over again.
- EVILTHETURTLE, on 06/30/2009, -5/+18***** sellouts.
- phpirate, on 06/30/2009, -3/+16Congratulations MPAA! You have succeeded in ridding the internet of piracy!
Oh whoops, looks like another 5 sites just popped up and are even more popular than the pirate bay when you were busy fapping to the news. Whoops. - samard2002, on 06/30/2009, -1/+13I always thought those were flags at the top of the ship. Apparently they were price tags.
- jparkinson, on 06/30/2009, -0/+10online piracy will be the same for me...
i never even use TPB, i just liked what they stood for. - Roobix, on 06/30/2009, -2/+12Hydra theory. Take one down, another 8 will pop up to replace it. The RIAA is fighting a losing battle.
Can you imagine if we were still using Napster? The only thing these mediathugs have accomplished is driving people to try even harder to circumvent their bans and fines. - reed311, on 06/30/2009, -2/+11I can't believe you folks didn't see this coming. I mean, they made their living off of using other people's content without permission and then not compensating them for it; as well as charging $30 for crappy t-shirts. You think people like that are in it for the good of the world? These guys were always in it for the money and they played you fan boys like a group of Ron Paul supporters.
- TwwIX, on 06/30/2009, -1/+10What future?
- samard2002, on 06/30/2009, -0/+9This cannot be dugg enough. They may also trade in the IPs to save their asses some jail time. Would you put anything past them at this point?
- willigan, on 06/30/2009, -0/+9Apparently everyones too young to remember that this isn't the first time a large tracker has gone down. Everyones freaking out and its still online.
- Jaime2000, on 06/30/2009, -0/+8The Pirate Bay is dead. Long live piracy!
- artfiend77, on 06/30/2009, -0/+7Um, I'm downloading as we speak. And you know who gets me all the torrents I need? Google. Awesome search engine for torrents. File sharing has JUST begun.
- Lane, on 06/30/2009, -1/+8Yes but only after some delusional bastard of a company that has too much money and no sense buys them out so that they can go ahead and buy that island
- Jaime2000, on 06/30/2009, -1/+8I don't care for what that sellout has to say. The Pirate Bay we knew is dead. The pirates of the internet have been betrayed. It's a sad day for all of us.
- hawkspur, on 06/30/2009, -1/+7AFK, killing myself.
- Darksoul, on 06/30/2009, -1/+7This sounds just plain ass retarded, the site will never bring the users that it did before and they know it.
- Jaime2000, on 06/30/2009, -1/+7Dude, there is a difference between "yeah, we are tired of fighting and going to jail, so we are shutting down the site for good; thanks for your support" and "HEY GUYS, WE ARE SELLING THE SITE FOR HUGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY TO PEOPLE WHO WILL TRY TO MAKE A PROFIT FOR THE MEDIA COMPANIES WE HAVE BEEN FIGHTING ALL THIS TIME WHILE COMPLYING WITH THE LAWS WE KNOW ARE BROKEN. BUT DON'T WORRY, IT WILL ALL BE THE SAME!!!!!"
One is retiring with dignity. The other is a ***** sellout. - jurassiqpark, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6the pirates just jumped ship
- V1ruk, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5DIE WITH HONOR!
- dagamer34, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5But are the new 8 ever going to be as good as the original 1? Unless you kill off the other 7, you end up fragmenting users for quite some time.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5Regardless of whatever happens with TPB, you can continue to show your displeasure with the tactics (both to consumers and the artists) of the RIAA megacorps.
Don't buy their products.
It's that simple.
Pay the artists directly by buying concert merchandise, tickets, CDs at venues, their work online at their websites, etc. - NegativeDigg, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5Something new and better would replace it... Everything can get replaced! EVERYTHING!!
/i hope... - Jaime2000, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5Yes. Then it could have died with dignity.
- kopiwrite, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5The day music died? LMFAO you're getting your music from the wrong sites.
...err I mean yeah ... sad news ... move along? - jparkinson, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5I have a feeling that the company might back out of the deal before it happens... even just the NEWS of TPB being sold has resulted in a huge backlash. I can't imagine how quickly everyone will jump ship (intended) once it actually happens.
- noboot, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Uh, this isn't cool.
- keviniskool, on 06/30/2009, -1/+5^ This idea
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/30/2009, -4/+8Feel free to lay down and die, but I, for one, will continue to fight for the freedom of information, ideas, and the end of so-called "intellectual property."
Never forget that when the internet was born WE WON by default. Intellectual property ceased to exist in a digital reality. This is not our fight to lose. The RIAA, the MPAA, and the rest are the ones with their back against the wall. They are the ones trying to stop progress in its tracks and turn back the clock to a time when their businesses made a little bit of sense.
I'm sure some people like you said the British were too powerful to be stopped, and that they would put an end to the American revolution sooner or later. They were wrong because others stood up in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds and fought for what was right. So I will continue to fight, and you can dismiss me and Digg as "quaint." That is fine.
I have seen the world of truly free ideas, and it is place of wonderful creation, sharing, and community. It is a place where even the strictest of governments struggle and fail to keep the eyes of the world from the injustices they exact on their own people. It is a place where the struggling musician in LA can be influenced by a German artist he's never met and create something wonderful. We still live in such a world, and if you think the corporate paid death of a single website is going convince me freedom of expression and ideas on a global scale isn't worth fighting for you are dead wrong.
If anything, this shows just how pathetic and weak the copyright hordes are. They couldn't even come up with a legitimate case with which to fight. The best they could do was buy the court. That might work for now, but their funds are not infinite. Not even the record industry can afford every judge in the world, and in what is becoming a war of attrition they're going to have an awful lot of judges to pay if they want to stop all of us.
DEATH TO COPYRIGHT
DEATH TO INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY - robertisaar, on 06/30/2009, -1/+5so, replace the RIAA with this new TPB?
- Presbyterian, on 06/30/2009, -2/+6I'm sure people said the same about Napster.
- lepetitmousse, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3what is better than oink?
