- SSPink, on 05/28/2009, -3/+276They tossed out the random selection process to handpick Norström because he was an expert in copyright laws. An expert who belonged to several pro-copyright organizations and believed in a particularly expansive view of copyright in Swedish law. You only do this if you want a particular outcome from the case.
Anyone who doesn't believe this was a fix is fooling themselves, from the very start the IFPI seemed way too confident in the outcome, even as their case fell to shambles and it became painfully clear that the people prosecuting the case had a woefully inadequate understanding of the technology involved they never lost confidence in the eventual verdict. We now know why.
I just don't know if it's possible to get a fair hearing against organizations as powerful and deep-pocketed as the ones representing the copyright lobby. - racerboy99, on 05/28/2009, -2/+196' the younger generation has lost faith in the legal system because of the shady selection procedure.'
It's a wonder why isn't it? - AngelBunny, on 05/28/2009, -1/+112What is with that judge anyways? Every picture I can find of him looks like something was just shoved up his ass.
- tgc1, on 05/29/2009, -0/+84Something was, a roll of money.
- sondatch, on 05/28/2009, -1/+76That picture of him is golden.
- SSPink, on 05/29/2009, -1/+58The problem runs deeper than that. This isn't about one biased judge who should have recused himself, now it's about the fact that the random selection process was scrapped to specifically give the case to this particular biased judge. The outcome wasn't just fixed by the judge, it was also fixed by the people who assigned the judge. Even if they manage to get a mistrial granted in this environment, what are the odds the next trial will be fair? Will they actually get an impartial judge, or just one who's bias is less obvious?
- lukychmz, on 05/29/2009, -2/+58Welcome to big business running the world...
- inactive, on 05/29/2009, -4/+56***** THE RIAA
- fxu1989, on 05/29/2009, -0/+51The fact that he is an expert in copyright law doesn't have anything to do with a mistrial. The fact that he belonged to pro-copyright groups and he didn't say anything before the case began, that's the problem.
- cyrix, on 05/29/2009, -0/+40Except this man is not a good judge.
- Bobby1978, on 05/29/2009, -1/+28Actually they're unraveling to the world the hypocritical farce of everything your generation built.
- internalprime8, on 05/29/2009, -1/+21"'We will win in the end,' he said, promising a happy ending."
Boy, I hope so. This whole incident has been a big joke. - nteeple, on 05/29/2009, -2/+21This has gone on for too long.
- tekproxy, on 05/29/2009, -2/+21He was as randomly selected as that photo of him was.
- IADTatami, on 05/29/2009, -2/+20Nothing has been stolen.
In fact, it is impossible to quantify the actual financial damage casual infringement causes- if any at all.
Both the video game industry and the movie industry keep breaking their own record profits, and have been doing so pretty much every year for the past ten years.
One wonders why it is so important that casual infringement be stomped out so aggressively- to the point where democratic processes must be circumvented, and sovereign governments be intimidated into enacting unpopular, industry written legislation, and ISPs be forced to spy upon their customers and retain the data they collect from this monitoring for extended periods of time.
Maybe- just maybe- the cure is worse than the disease.
Copyright law is out of control. - tgc1, on 05/29/2009, -2/+19You say this kind of thing knowing full well that your fair use rights and the like are being blatantly robbed from you by outfits like this. That these companies do not support artists. The same type of organization that will sue a student into oblivion, saying they should drop out in order to pay their legal fees. You'd have to be ***** insane to stand behind the tactics the RIAA/AFPI are using.
- Ocelot13, on 05/29/2009, -2/+16toss filetype:torrent to the end of a search and you have yourself google torrent search. don't put blame on something you dont understand. when you download the .torrent from piratebay... you arent downloading anything illegal. does that file contain any copyrighted music? no. movies? no. books? no. anything at all like that? no.
get your facts right. - ZombieSociety, on 05/29/2009, -1/+15By the same retarded logic of the founders of Pirate Bay infringing on copyright laws, the founders of Google have broken every law in the history of mankind.
- TSK05, on 05/29/2009, -2/+15google has links to all sorts of copyrighted material.... both are simply a search engine.
- iceman0113, on 05/29/2009, -1/+14"If I was an artist or a label, I sure the hell wouldn't want to produce music for free." Good thing you're not an artist, because you wouldn't see a dime from me.
I'm sorry, but I thought artists wanted to create music for people to hear what they're feeling, their experiences, not money. As Set Your Goals vocalist says:
“I have always said from day one that I don’t do any of this for money, and I do not. But it does not sit well with me the amount of money he has kept from us (and many other bands). I could care less [sic] about seeing any of that money for myself, but i would rather it be with somebody or another band who deserves it more than John Wylie does. We cannot regain control of our Mutiny cd; the reset songs we will get back in another 3 years. For now he continues to milk Set Your Goals for what he can.”
That's what a label is doing to Set Your Goals, milking the ***** out of a band. Ticketmaster/LiveNation screwed over more fans by jacking up convenience fees. So no more concerts for me either. You get real, if artists are in this for the money, then expect more Brooke Hogans and Britney Spears. For the most part, I hope most artists in it for the music, unlike the music industry. /rant - anthropodeus, on 05/29/2009, -0/+11somehow i dont think court cases will keep the internet from getting what it wants i'm gonna have to agree with TPB.
- Heavenfall, on 05/29/2009, -1/+12Buried for inaccuracy. There is no evidence he was handpicked. The defense lawyer is making a claim. The article is presented as if its the verdict, which isn't due yet for a while.
- TSK05, on 05/29/2009, -1/+11Copyright infringement != stealing. There is a reason that the law does not only have a section on stealing and then says downloading something you did not pay for is stealing, that is, there is a reason that copyright infringement is its own part of the law. For instance, if you open wiki on theft, you'll see that in English law, "A person is guilty of theft, if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it" - you may notice that downloading material you do not own does not deprive the other of it.
- Virgule, on 05/29/2009, -0/+9"Tomas Norström at his best"
I can't laugh at this guy's face; Its not funny it's just biologically fascinating.
(shamelessly paraphrased off Brian from Family Guy S07E16) - smacksaw, on 05/29/2009, -0/+9I'm going to make a left turn here from the issues and say that he is one hell of a dumb looking guy.
- Stavrosian, on 05/29/2009, -0/+9Aw, did the old man just sit there and take it like a little bitch when he found out the same?
- anonymousmedic, on 05/29/2009, -5/+13Wow, just wow.
So much for the smug sense of the EU's justice for all, isn't it? - WoollyMittens, on 05/29/2009, -1/+9These sort of things scare me. Our corporatist masters have taken control of the justice system.
- lutafin, on 05/29/2009, -0/+8Are you seriously that retarded? So, if you believe that something is unfair, are you just gonna sit down and watch or are you going to let your opinions be heard?
The whole point with the Pirate Bay case is that the first trial was completely biased. I'm not a person that downloads movies, but if you make a ***** ***** movie and i pay for it and i'm not entertained by the ***** movie, are you giving me my money back? No, you will not.
So instead of paying for something that probably sucks ass, i rather get it for free and if i really like it i might even consider buying it.
You probably take more govt aid than anybody here else here, moron. - theonlywizdum, on 05/29/2009, -2/+9@irirtegood. So you want TPB to be charged with having a name that sounds bad? I wasn't aware that assisting copyright infringement was a crime, when did they make that one up? Where does it stop? Most dvd burners are used for burning movies/games/songs/ etc. Very few people actually use them solely for legal backups. Should Sony be sued because people use their dvd burners to burn illegal movies? Or are they all set because their name is "Sony" and not "DVD ripping Inc."?
- stack3r, on 05/29/2009, -1/+8Because a story from any of those news companies will write an article any more truthful than torrent freak. They will write what they get paid to write.
- eleete, on 05/29/2009, -4/+11I sat by and watched as 'contests' deprived copyright owners of their content. I attended school for graphic arts and then photography and watched those authors lose extreme value in their works. Especially photographers. Consider that when you enter such 'contests' you forfeit all rights to a work. They essentially remove your rights and re-assign them to themselves as you enter the contests. Their concern is not for the artists my friends. It is a self serving and greed based interest in the media. _(insert country here)Funniest Videos... Enter this picture contest and win a camera... They are all the same. Once you enter them, they own the submission. Read their rules and terms. Amazing how fooled the public is in these venues. Anyhow, as the VALUE of content has declined in their own eyes, so shall it be in the public. EXCEPT. The value of anything in the public domain is beyond exponential in value TO the public domain. ANYTHING that is released to the public domain is there for the benefit of ALL ! What is the true value of content released to the public domain ? Consider that it is available to 6 billion souls, not just ONE ! Pick your side public domain. Which side will you be on in the end ? Monopolies SUCK, especially when they are granted to large Corporations that lobbied for these rules.

- senae, on 05/29/2009, -0/+6-Story about a Swedish court case and it's corrupt legal system
-Comment agreeing with the fact that said legal system is corrupt
-Reply to that comment seemingly at random yelling about an unrelated political issue (in a different country)
You've got quite the thought process there, dayal. - theonlywizdum, on 05/29/2009, -1/+7Why are they even going after sites like TPB and individual people? There are street vendors in China selling bootleg DVDs, why not go after them, and the people that supply them? Those people are actually making a PROFIT off someone else's work.
- ProfessorLX, on 05/29/2009, -1/+7they have no power in china, and china allows bootlegging to happen, it stimulates their economy
- oldhat, on 05/29/2009, -1/+7Anyone involved in the legal system inevitably loses faith in the legal system.
Anyway, seems the Swedish are just as corrupt as the Americans. This ought to take you uppity swedes down a notch or twenty. - roflcopters, on 05/29/2009, -0/+6Judges have a duty to be as independent as possible to prevent bias. Being a judge who specialises in copyright and who is also part of pro-copyright organisations completely ignores that duty.
- theaceoface, on 05/29/2009, -1/+7So much for having a "fair" trial... More liked rigged
- eleete, on 05/29/2009, -3/+8You would have others do your homework for you ? Why not seek what you (supposedly) search. You would find numerous sources. The problem is you wish not to find them. Your plea is pathetic. Seek what you search and you cannot help but find the sources you wish. Surely you would blast any source presented in this forum.
