- yeshuu, on 10/10/2007, -4/+132That is the biggest bit of ***** i have ever heard, how is the "pixel" ingrained in popular culture????
- aguynamedben, on 10/10/2007, -6/+115pie charts are better for graphical integrity
- Nogger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+76What a confusing mess of a chart. They look like a prime choice when obfuscation your intention.
- Dalrek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+69Why did you stop them? I'm intrigued by this bucket theory.
- DamageInc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+66Lame.
- acid0426, on 10/10/2007, -2/+60I've never seen a pixel chart until now, and I hope I never do again. It looks butchered compared to a pie chart with identical data.
- Askee, on 10/10/2007, -2/+58I wish I'd played more tetris, this is confusing :/
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+57retarded
- SuperiorKarsch, on 10/10/2007, -1/+50That's stupid, it will make estimating so much harder...
- Zinite, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36I'm sure the vast majority of people don't know what a pixel is. In fact, in a computer course I was taking last semester, someone next to me posed the question "What is a pixel?" to a nearby student. The student started out with "Well, imagine a bucket...". I stopped them right there.
- vanimal, on 10/10/2007, -2/+36You have to use something to dump your content down the series of tubes.
- veggiemoore, on 10/10/2007, -1/+34Yeah, seriously. It's so much easier to misconstrue data if you're representing it with some arbitrary shape. I noticed these in Wired, and it took me like, five minutes to figure it out.
- meekmassacre, on 10/10/2007, -1/+33That guys name is NSFW
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+33Some cool looking pie charts here

- orlyfactor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25I pray that I never have to look at a "pixel chart" ever again. it burns!
- AJH16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25Yeah, the only thing I noticed is that the samples given use the layout of the chart to further warp the statistics to make certain results appear to be more prominent. (ie, if you put all of one section together versus wrapping another section around the outside, the clustered values will seem to be a larger percentage because it seems to consume more realestate.) "Pixel" charts are more difficult to make sense of and provide no advantage.
- chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24It was pioneered by Enron because when everything lines up it all disappears.
- Ardiea, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21They seem.... deceptive. Blocks for the data you want to appear larger and long lines for data you want to appear smaller.
- superfusion, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22I can't believe that pixel charts are more popular than my proposed "Scream Chart." For example, one would: a) turn up the volume b) hear an introduction: "This chart compares the 2005 median income of Detroit residents by race" c) hear screams of varying volume and maniacalness (depicted in this post by H's): "Hispanic" Ahhhhhhh! "Black" Ahhhhh! White Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Asian Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! /s
- shadowspawn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Mooninites are pleased.
- baalzebub, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15this is the percentage of a pie chart that looks like pacman
http://www.usablemarkets.com/images/pie_pacman_chart.png - markp93, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14The pixel chart on the left seems to artiificially inflate the numbers of the '48%' group due to the hole in the middle, making it look much more than twice the size of the '24%' group.
- bIuebonics, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13what are you, retarded? .02pi or 3.6 degrees, obviously.
- Erectile, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Photoshop, MSPaint. Draw 100 squares and colour them in. It's fairly simple.
- Godlike, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Im in ur tubes, pixelatin ur pie charts
- manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11These "pixel charts" allow you to make the shapes arbitrary, using area to represent magnitude (volume of sales, or what have you). Unfortunately, visual tricks can be used to make areas appear larger/smaller than they actually are. Pie charts have them all in the same shape ("pie slice" of a common circle). This makes them consistent, objective, and clean.
- saleem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9agreed. That NYTimes pixel chart puts the jesus crew in a big block in the middle, and wraps a smaller portion around the perimeter, 1-box wide. very easy to miscontrue the numbers. 'pies dont lie.'
- Takteek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You aren't supposed to be able to tell the percentage of an item by looking at the chart. That's what the legend is for. The chart is for relative comparison of values, which is completely impossible on a pixel chart.
- TheKricket, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8anil? what's wrong with anil? a lot of people like anil...
- ashwinashwin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6whatever. i've never seen a "pixel chart" in anything i've read... they look like ***** anyway...buried
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Pie charts terrible at displaying information? What are you on about???
- Godlike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6But the lines are SO HARD! I'm going back to pie charts where there are less lines. My crayons are old and blunted and mommy says that I can't have a knife because they make me all stabby.
- bIuebonics, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6if you have a whole collection of buckets and rbg colored water you could use a pointillism from the sky concept to demonstrate pixels...
- honemasterT, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6its called a "treemap" folks..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treemap - floppyparty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6The pie chart is simply a visual representation of date, something you can look at quickly as a summary of results and understand. They are not terrible at displaying information, that's why you see them so often. Viewing columns of data is a terrible, albeit more exact display of information. I dint believe people actually base research off of a pie chart, they will use the numbers instead.
- szembek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You're an idiot. They are meant to give a quick visual representation of figures. That is all. They do it much better than these silly 'pixel charts'.
- Error601, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5That gives you even more ways to misrepresent the data. By putting in different shapes and locations, you can make the proportions appear different.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Super Paper Mario
- Kailash.Nadh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Pixel charts suck, sore on eyes, cluttered and complicated. The whole point of the pie diagram is to be as simple as the pie! Pixel charts, never again.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The fact that the blocks are of different shapes makes it impossible to quickly see what is going on with the data. With pie charts you only have to look at one shape. The sector with varying angles.
- hmmdar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Pixel charts are cool, but it would be fairly easy to manipulate how the blocks are arranged to make smaller % seem larger
- salinemist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4No kidding, that's how I learned everything I know.
35% of you hate buttered popcorn BTW. - elnerdo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5gay /geɪ/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[gey] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation adjective, -er, -est, noun, adverb

- bIuebonics, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3that's the thing, it's easier to estimate values on a pie chart at a quick glance than a pixel chart, but you can display more accurate information for an easier time to measure with pixel charts. of course, then this rather defeats the purpose of the chart anyways as the actual data should be written or spoken somewhere in the rest of the presentation.
- wanzedk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Christ, those charts suck! So much easier with a simple pie diagram!
- jason469, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I was just working on a pie chart and I have to agree with Andechs, I think the pie chart is visually appealing, but it isn't good at showing information on a more statistical level.
Most of the people I work with are from the old business state of mind and they are comfortable with pie charts vs bars or graphs. - SpaceMonkeyZero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The inventor of the pixel chart MUST be found, tarred and feathered, dressed up in a pig costume, dropped in Mecca, and if he survives that, drop him in the middle of the Atlantic ocean with some cinderblocks tied to his feet.
- tnvwboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Pie charts are fine, especially if you blow up the small percentages when there are a bunch. That's more or less what the Wired chart did but in a messy way. The "pixel" method wasn't any better, worse in my opinion.
This is more likely the editor asking the designer to sex it up. Wired is heavy on graphic design anyway. -
