- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45As a motorcyclist, I'd pay good money for this. Coming off a bike would still suck, but it would suck a lot less.
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30You probably heard about this technology during the winter olympics.
"A futuristic flexible material that instantly hardens into armour upon impact will protect US and Canadian skiers from injury on the slalom runs at this year's Winter Olympics."
http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn8721 - dancpsu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31The liquid is actually used to treat fabric, so it seems like it could treat any fabric. It prevents bullets from going through, stiffens in less than a millisecond after impact, and even makes a kevlar vest become knife and shrapnel-proof.
The only question is, does it breathe? You don't want to die of heat exhaustion in the desert while trying to prevent your arm from being blown off. Also, if it breathes, then you can cover your face with a shrapnel-proof handkerchief. - chatwithaninja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30heard it before?
"The slow blade penetrates the shield" - lbjazz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Somehow I doubt that a lot of what the soldiers currently wear is very breathable.
- cogen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25This is really neat stuff, a good find.
I could've sworn I've heard of the technology before, but I don't remember where... - yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Finally, condoms that don't break
- tzmguitarist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22have you ever seen videos demonstrating someone absorbing the impact of a bullet while wearing normal kevlar? it practically knocks them off their feet, not to mention the massive bruising and loss of breath from the impact. i doubt that any normal criminal could make their escape in such a state - regardless of what armor they're wearing.
After all, getting hit by a Mack truck is still painful - even if you're in kevlar. - JMartin13, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21i before e, except after c
- sardon1c, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18@tzmguitarist
You watch too many movies. Basic physics will tell you that in most cases you will not be practically knocked off your feet. If the bullet was carrying that much energy, the shooter would also be knocked over. I believe the Mythbusters did a demo of this. - passion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16"i before e, except after c"
...or when sounding like 'A', like in neighbor and weigh. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15" i doubt that any normal criminal could make their escape in such a state - regardless of what armor they're wearing."
Did you ever see the north hollywood shootout? Those two guys shrugged off anything the LAPD had, they each took over 100 rounds and were still walking & shooting fine - codemonkey420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I wouldn't bank my life on anything in the line of fire, but let me tell you I'd feel a whole lot safer having something that "might" save my life compared to my skin which is known to be easily penetrated by projectiles ;-)
Even if it was to leave bruising, and a few broken bones if hit just right it sure beats a pine box by a long shot. I do not think we're at the point of making the human body invincible but if we can get a few more soldiers back from harms way with most of their body parts and lives then I'm all for it

...the particles jam up forming a log jam structure that prevents things from penetrating through them...

Those are the only two vid formats they offer.
Nef - EricAnderton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I wouldn't be so sure of that.
"The stiffening of the liquid allows the energy of an impact to be distributed over a much larger surface area – so the force, rather than being focused on the area of a bullet head, is distributed over the area of the surrounding fabric. Ballistic tests have demonstrated that the treatment can actually prevent bullets from penetrating."
While this sounds good for would-be bank robbers*, keep in mind that all this does is spread the force of a slug out across a larger area - the victim is still probably going to bruise pretty badly. So we're not talking total immunity to bullets and bombs here. Although I'd wager that it'll take several shots from standard cop sidearms on armor like this to bring a guy down.
//"But I was wearing the juice!" - truegadget, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12more top notch stuff from msaleem
wicked cool, man! - anillop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11"The slow blade penetrates the shield"
Wow nice Dune refrence, wasnt expecting that one. - MuffinMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This is what they're gonna make the T1000 out of. Just in time too, since the Arnold is leaving office soon.
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Sardonis:
I don't think he meant people will be exactly sent flying by the force of bullets, but rather hurt so much they'll be unable to keep standing. Or something like that. =/ - NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12"Choose your format:

Why don't you just kick me in the balls. - garraeth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6But you'd have to be humping at 3000 rpm for it to "stiffen up"...
- dustedbunny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Having family in the military, this is very, VERY, ressuring. It's amazing what scientists are coming up with these days. The possibilties are endless. I agree with loudog51 though, lets just hope that this technology doesnt wander into the wrong hands. I mean sure domestic criminals, but what about the actual groups of people we're fighting right now? This sort of technology really did some out at the right time.
Great digg. Deftinitley worth reading! - dumpling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4most interesting story i've seen in a while. excellent find!
- SoldierPrime, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Very cool.
You could make a master cheif suit very easy :o - tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Bullet proof G-Unit wear in 3-2-1...
I can't wait to see kids shoot at each other to test it, it will be like the new paintball - AstroPHX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Watch the video; they specifically mention the fact that the vests only cover the chest. One of the specific uses of the product is to protect your currently uncovered bits, be it your arms, legs, or balls.
Anyone who doesn't think this is a fantastic improvement needs to watch HBO's 'Bagdhad E.R." - yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5no, they will just use it on whomever goes hunting with Cheney
- breezy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Heres link to video that doesnt check your version of Quicktime. Mine wasnt working even though I had Quicktime 7, but this one seems to work fine:
http://www.sciencentral.com/news/image_db/2024693/NNM3022_LiquidArmor_ISDN.mov - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this is incredible - the military needs to start producing these immediately..
- ATLBeer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'd take a broken rib vs a bullet through my heart any day.
This may be the end of bullets in modern warefare. How weird. - pompom246, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"'i before e, except after c'
...or when sounding like 'A', like in neighbor and weigh."
...and except for "weird" words. - livet0ski, on 08/17/2009, -0/+3There was something similar to this in popular science recently. It was a hat for skiers and snowboarders that acts like a helmet when a sudden impact occurs.
- odyss3y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2youre probably thinking of corn starch...
http://www.seed.slb.com/en/scictr/lab/cornstarch/index.htm - DiamondIce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember in high school my science teacher did something like this with flour and water in a bowl, if you got the mix right it could be punched and it wouldn't splash because the gluten in the flour reacted to the kinetic energy of the punch and caused the mix to briefly turn into a solid.
Of course there's no way to apply a flour and water mix to cloth to make body armour like this.
I could see other uses for this liquid as well, motorcycle gear was already mentioned, abrasion resistant cover-alls (clothing of all type really) leaps to mind. - anvilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Louis Woo's "impact armor" from Niven's Ringworld series.

Quicktime is good though. Anyways this is really good technology and it's actually applied, very promising. - JoJoDilio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@yournamehere:
ROFLMAO
You almost got me fired for laughing too loud in the office for that one! - JoJoDilio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My thoughts exactly.
- WeeklyGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This kind of stuff just now being released to the public as they are being advanced makes me think that the government really *doesn't* have any secret, alien military tech that they are holding out on. Curse you sci-fi for getting my hopes up!
- ingoldsby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That is really impressive stuff!
- eggo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, calcium carbonate is chalk right? and if I remember correctly ethylene glycol is the main ingredient in antifreeze, is that really all this stuff is? Time for some garage chemistry i think...
- prab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think I heard that in that robbery each one was wearing three layers of body armor. Each layer spreads the force even more, so they didn't get hurt. In the military they want it to as light as possible, but still keep you alive.
- Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@Sardon1c
While what you say is true, let's not forget the pictures of people who have been wearing vests when shot. Lots of brusing, even broken ribs. As a matter of fact, I have nice bruise on my shoulder from shooting my .30-06.
Have you ever shot something like a .30-06? If your feet aren't planted right it'll make you take a step back. Now put the but of the rifle on your sternum and pull the trigger. If you're not braced for it already you'll end up on your ass in a heartbeat. And who's braced to get shot? So yes, you can be knocked over by a bullet just like you can be knocked over by a gun.
Pistol rounds are another story though. Anybody remember that video of the bank robbers in head to toe body armor? All the cops were shooting them but it didn't do any good because all the cops had were pistols and shotguns, neither of which are any good at penetrating anyway. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This would be great for motorcyclists. Yeah, flying off a bike at 80MPH will still hurt you, but it's less likely to tear your skin apart.
- aposter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@odyss3y
Dang, you beat me to it. Years ago in physics class we mixed up a cornstarch soloution that was about as fluid as silly putty. You could slowly roll it into a ball, and then if you tried to crush the ball it would barely deform. It provided a really fun way to ignore the teacher for the next week after he showed it to us. - CadMasterAdam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3CLASSIC
