- amsterdamordeth, on 10/10/2007, -3/+76thats all good until you have to change a wire out and have to remove 100 zipties and put em back. I get tired of that myself.
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -3/+72A funny trick sys admins love: Just unplug one random cable.
- Kasot, on 10/10/2007, -3/+68Haha! Compare them to quality cabling:

- Tobark, on 10/10/2007, -2/+35Wordpress makes sys admins cry.
- JasonCox, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32"All I'm seeing right now is:

Thats because someone tripped over the cable that was connected to the SQL server. - amsterdamordeth, on 10/10/2007, -3/+31those are the tubes that the internets are on.
- everfalling, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27a thing of beauty. though i think it'd be better with velcro strips instead of zip ties.
- johnny222, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23Stop teasing me with something called rack.jpg
- amsterdamordeth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19i wasn't really just refering to the image there, but to using zipties for wire management in general. There are better alternatives to zip ties in most cases.
- bullsfan03, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18and i thought the server room at my department was horrible...
- Typhuse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16the result of bad cabling. :P
- maino82, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17he said "th" damnit! don't question upper management, just do what your told and unplug the 132th cable!
- matt646, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16As far as the second one goes...
That looks like the back of a patch panel(s), there is no need to "change a wire" if that is the case. If one is bad for whatever reason, tuff luck there are a bunch more. - ocirs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14http://duggmirror.com/tech_news/Pictures_Cable_Mes ...
- bedago, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16My favorite is the one with the sign: "DO NOT TOUCH ANY OF THESE WIRES". no kidding
- Shigglyboo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15I work at a place that didn't have a proper install. It's an A/V studio, and cabling nightmares are very common for us too. Thing is, no boss really wants to pay you to spend the amount of time it actually takes to do it right. They want fast and cheap. They are willing to sacrifice quality.
- ianmurrays, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12"yeah, we need to unplug the 132th cable, the blue one, please"
- legendxx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10curl_init() has nothing to do with SQL
- robdavy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9http://m3.bestpicever.com/pics/pic_1190929311279.j ...
That's power cable's at a music concert or similar event. They'll only be there for a few days, so they usually look like that.
Kinda scary though, as there's probably 1000s of amps there... - RadiatedAnt, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12I came up with an idea, what if you put fiberglass through the rj45 shielding connected to the rj45 connectors. when a laser is pointed at one of the connectors the fiber optics would make the other end light up! Brilliant! you can has your cake and eat it too.
Patent pending... - jessi74, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Not safe for any work if things go wrong.
- mrurc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8In some of those, I think that the cabling is actually holding the rack up. It's infrastructure!
- blueforce4116, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You are one of those people everyone loves to hate.
- Eazy~e, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I love the pic at the end! I read somewhere that it was from an ISP and those were all the dial-in modems. No wonder dial-up ISPs are a thing of the past...
- tempusrob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Eh ... it's just called a "tone generator." You have to at least have a *general* idea of where the line terminates, though ...
- Gizza, on 11/08/2007, -0/+6How do you say that? One Thirty Tooth?
- them3nace, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5And thats also from the back of the patch panel. I am sure most look at least close to this when they are first built (with no actual machines hooked up via patch cables).
- SushiCW, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Site's down, but it's OK. Odds are these are the same dozen pictures as usual...
http://www.sysadminday.com/horrors.html - legendxx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6rofl? They have equipment that emits a tone along a wire and can be picked up very easily at the other end.. I don't know exactly what they're called but they've been in existence since before computers. nt though
- diggduggjoe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Thanks for the laugh. No matter how much we try mankind has millions of back rooms with cables all over the freaking place. However, that said, it does help to clean it up from time to time. I only recommend cabling firms that do a neat job. It should at least start out nice.
- unangst, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6A funny trick for system admins: plug both ends of a network cable into the same switch...
- Haphazardness, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7*Trip Hazard*

- HunterTV, on 10/10/2007, -9/+13The Flying Spaghetti Monster has landed. Prepare to meet your DOOM.
- EvilGeniusTodd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Which will rot into useless dust inside of 3 years.
Bad idea mate. - marillion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4But ... but ... the zip ties weren't trimmed.
- davidbond, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Added benefit: you could make the network equipment flash lights on and off very quickly, and get the equipment at the other end to watch for those flashes and then maybe use that so that the two devices could communicate in some way.
Oh wait. - AlanLivingston, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4They could fix all of these with just a few towel racks!
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Suddenly my room feels much tidier.
- EvilGeniusTodd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I got a user a nice 2 week unpaid vacation for doing just such a thing a few years back.
- jollyholly, on 10/10/2007, -10/+13All I'm seeing right now is:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: curl_init() in /home/vibr/www/vibrant.com/blog/wp-content/plugins/digg-this.php on line 43 - Shigglyboo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3i respectfully disagree. you can't find which cable you're trying to move if you do wish to move one. machine rooms seldom need to be rearranged anyway. Also, it easy to accidentally unplug ***** because it's tangled to the wire you're moving. I like cable ties and those little things you can strap em down with..
- TheLoneWolf071, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4In the defense of sysadmins, it's hard to do it... I help manage a large building's IT and we have several router closets with close to 150 - 300 connections on several modules, and some times you have to do that quick fix, so we consolidate about once per year. These are the before pics for us.
- ohnnyj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Reminds me of this story:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Not_the_Best_of_Ways_to ... - joshjoneswas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I love the poor aimless attempts at making them color coded that some of the pictures show!
- CorpT, on 10/15/2007, -1/+3Your network people suck if that takes it down. And don't call system admins networkers. System admin play with an OS.
- mrurc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I love the URL. Do not tempt digg like that people! Digg will crush your puny website!
