- LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Ahh...now this is a trip down memory lane...
I used to use Yahoo! all the time when I first started using the internet back in '96 or '97 but about 2 years ago, I switched to Google because of it's simplicity. - PiGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Or even http://www.google.com
Amazing how similiar they look.. - stateofmind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13It would be funny to see a history of Google's.
"And here in 2001, we see Google stretched the search bar from 35px to 40px."
"Come 2003, radical changes ensued. Google added 2px of space between the logo and search bar." - ScottJG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12And as the years went by, it got cluttered with a lot of useless stuff people didnt want. No wonder people switched to Google, I cant even tell where the search box is in some of those pictures! :P
- grooviekenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I get a Warm Fuzzy Feeling looking at theYahoo frontpages from between 1995 - 1998. =)
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I used Yahoo since the http://akebono.stanford.edu/ days. I remember checking Yahoo daily to see the sites they had added. Unfortunately they jumped the shark for me as soon as they started trying to become a portal. I moved to Altavista and then to Google in the early days and haven't looked back. The only thing I still use is my.yahoo.com because I have yet to find a better alternative.
Every now and then I try and give them another shot but they're far too cluttered for me, even with the new redesign. - msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Now that I read my description, I think I was too generous in referring to the implementation of new technologies. It is actually more interesting and perhaps revolting to see how every year made the Yahoo! homepage more and more cluttered. Just compare img 3 and img 6.
- revmitcz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5you need to go to http://yahoo.com/preview to see the new look. If you're using an unsupported browser, it'll tell ya.
- nhansen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5you can do this with any site via the waybackmachine...here's the link http://www.archive.org/web/web.php
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Here's the story in a nutshell. The pictures show a site that starts out with a clear purpose and loads of personality and gradually transforms into a site that tries to do too much and is indistinguishable from any other big corporate site on the web (except for the logo.)
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah I'd like the http://search.yahoo.com/ if that box advertising the Yahoo! Toolbar didn't fly down from the top of the window.
- d3m3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I dont think they had pictures back then.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I thought the previous one was almost spot-on for what Yahoo wanted to do. Google is better for a search engine, but Yahoo is a portal.
This new design feels too applicationy to me. It doesn't feel like a friendly website like it used to. - Buga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ahh classic Yahoo, the gateway to many users first pr0n search.
- fletchowns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3First one looks like craigslist
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Isn't it amazing how far we've come in 10 years?
- DrEbola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Interesting that they redid the logo right off the bat but kept the 2nd one to this day.
- Matt2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Back in the good old days, you could say "Hey, did you see the new maps on the doom site?" or "Go to your domain registrar" and people would know what page you were talking about. Because there was only one.
- DyceFreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2too bad nobody cares about yahoo anymore, everything is google this, google that.
- deivys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ever since I started using a computer back in 96. I have always used Yahoo even till this day it's my default page. I Like the way the web page is right now. There are some stuffs that i will like to get rid of but for the most part I like it. Not to bash Google at all but I only use it to browse images. I don't think there's a search engine that does a better job at it. As for regular browsing, Yahoo gives me better result compare to Google.
- apt11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, like the December 20, 1996 website... http://web.archive.org/web/19961220222110/http://www10.yahoo.com/
- theplant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why can't I see the new design when I go to www.yahoo.com?
FF and IE both show the old look. Clearing my cache did nothing. - brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I used to use Yahoo! all the time when I first started using the internet back in '96 or '97 but about 2 years ago, I switched to Google because of it's simplicity."
Same here. Although I still keep my Yahoo! account live for "legacy" reasons (Messenger, Groups, contacts, etc..). - mikeyernst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, I like the simplicity of the first image.
It'd be interesting to see similar snapshots of how the craigslist site has evolved. Oh wait, it looks exactly the same. - LemonHerb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4If people want uncluttered why not try http://search.yahoo.com/
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well from the pics I could see it was about 1998 when I dropped Yahoo, since I don't recollect that 2000 look at all.
Oh the clutter. - GLSmyth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I started using Yahoo during the time of the initial design. They sought opinions as to whether or not they should add images, to which I responded in the negative, knowing that they would be doing it. The problem with images at the time was that they took so long to download, which is why I normally used the Web by going to my shell account and firing up lynx. Now Yahoo has so much junk that I've switched to Google, hoping that they continue to keep things clean and simple.
- zirtbow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its funny how they built their popularity up when they had barely anything except the search box back a few years. Then they slowly added more and more crap. Now Google steps in with a simpler design that's even simpler than Yahoo's earliest days and their stealing the show. It seems like people get a good thing going and then as time goes on in their effort to improve they actually screw it up. Where Google seems to be winning by keeping their homepage as simple/empty as possible.
- GreenLantern33, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3That kind of makes me think about how ***** web graphics use to be.
- calhoun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think both sites' popularity has to do more with what was currently available at the time and how the site in question compared to the competitors. Back in the day, Yahoo was nearly all there was... now there's lots of competitors (such as google) which a lot of people find to be better, for design and other reasons.
- monzsca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Heh Yahoo picks is still a feature. Not updated for a year though http://docs.yahoo.com/picks/
- boklm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, I think the old site didn't define a background color, so it was using whatever color you choosed as the default background color.
- smellinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check out http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.google.com for the archive of Google pages.
Looks like there have been about 200 detected and archived changes over the years. Some, I think, are their holiday logo changes, and some are small text changes, but there definitely have been some changes. Some are even "big" changes (relatively speaking). - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Didn't the old site used gray background color?
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One of the worst web sites of all time. The entire thing was a huge image map that took FOREVER to download over my high-tech 14.4 modem. http://www.microsoft.com/misc/features/features_flshbk_hp1.htm
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At one point they removed all adult content because they were using too much bandwidth on the Stanford servers. Those were dark days indeed.
- brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's version. VERSION.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah you can switch back now, but I'm assuming at some point this will become the only option, which is unfortunate.
- jeddings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, the new Yahoo! homepage. Welcome to MSN.com, circa 2004:
http://web.archive.org/web/20040126203705/http://www.msn.com/
Gee -- look familiar? - socal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@tizz
I agree, however, it looks like you can switch between the new and previous version on top left. Been using Yahoo a long time, will be switching to google after the remake. - sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1On my 12" Powerbook (which is only about 8 months old) the max res is 1024x768. I never really gave it much thought for myself, because being a web designer who cares about standards/usability, and all that rabble, I usually expect the lowest common denominator. 800x600 is still universally accepted as the lowest common denominator. I use fluid when called for, fixed width (8x6) most of the time, and every once in a while I will get a client who really wants to push the design envelope, so I run at 1024x768. However, those at the higher end are always the exception.
Back to my Powerbook, since I am running at 1024x768, I usually do run my windows maximized, because on this machine I need the real estate so I don't feel closed in. At home I have a 19' widescreen LCD, no issues with real estate there. So, with that being said, on THIS machine (Powerbook 12"), I have to say that a design that is at 800x600 is useful and suitable. I get some screen realestate, even when maximized, and I get access to the full experience as designed by the site's author. - taxicab, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I never used yahoo, I never cared for yahoo nor will I ever care for it!! Back in the day Alta Vista was my primary web search page, till Google came along...hehe
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2???
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Does anybody have the link to the picture of Microsoft's early website.
It looked something like: (crappy image) Welcome to Microsoft's World Wide Web Server!
We have a text verison if your browser doesn't support images. - gkwait, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Confirms the fact that Yahoo! sucks monkey ass.
- molsen311, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7it went from crappy to crappy. hooray!

GreenLantern33: This just reminds how ***** the Yahoo! web design still is. - alej744, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2I HATE YAHOO!.
