- bixby1, on 12/01/2008, -13/+49Speed camera's are a plague on our streets.
- quato, on 12/02/2008, -3/+37Guerrilla resistance at it's finest. Paint balls would also work, not that I would know.
- llamarama7, on 12/01/2008, -5/+29Whoever put the pickaxe in the Czech speeding camera had the right idea. Really, though, it's hard to go anywhere without being under surveillance.
- asgardshill, on 12/02/2008, -3/+27Speed cameras have to get power from somewhere. Just sayin' ...
- mdoverkill, on 12/02/2008, -5/+29They shouldn't really be surprised everyone knows that these cameras have nothing to do with safety.
- secrity, on 12/02/2008, -0/+19Many of the people who are against speed cameras and red light cameras are not for speeding or running red lights. Many people are against the misuse and possible abuse of these devices.
- meed, on 12/02/2008, -0/+19The problem is that often these cameras aren't being used for public safety but instead as a way to raise money. In many cases around the world many cameras are being placed in areas where the speed limit has recently been reduced or where the speed limit has been reduced for pretty much no reason besides for the benefits of the camera.
The other issue is that cities tend to contract out to corperations areas for these cameras to be placed, serviced and maintained while also giving the company of a percentage of the fines they give out. - sab0tage, on 12/02/2008, -0/+19It's safe to say that speed cameras are not popular here in the Britain.
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -0/+18Here in Arizona our proximity to the Mexican border has produced a high number of out of country vehicles driving in our state. Out of country vehicles are never issued tickets because tracking them down would be too expensive. So much for this not being about the money.
- JMellissa, on 12/02/2008, -2/+18I used to work with a guy (P.H.D. actually) from Chicago who said when they put those up in Chicago they were spray painted-over within a week.
- rizzo2008, on 12/02/2008, -0/+14Speed cameras have just gone to far. If they can't pull you over in person then they are just trying to get money off you. They are using the cameras as a source of revenue NOT primarily to get people to slow down.
- jbmcb, on 12/02/2008, -0/+13Now they are going to need security cameras watching the speeding cameras.
- rushiku, on 12/02/2008, -0/+13"Destroying speed cameras only causes more of your tax money to be given to the manufacturers of those cameras"
Yes and no. The Department of Fleecing the Public still has a budget, destroy enough cameras and that budget will be exceeded and the destroyed cameras will not be replaced.
Also, consider the point of these cameras: to generate revenue.
So, you have a choice - 1) sit quietly by and pay your increased taxes, er, I mean, tickets, or 2) Disable the damn things and watch the whole idea implode due to inability to generate revenue. (can't issue tickets if they never work) - arcticblue, on 12/02/2008, -0/+13Yet.
- emailowndme, on 12/02/2008, -2/+14well, if camera's are vandalized at a higher pace then they can be replaced, I think it's fair to say legislators will get the idea they are unpopular.
- stevenb, on 12/02/2008, -1/+12The fact that there are no points associated with the ticket... it's just a fine.. proves that they're not for our safety.
- Testiculese, on 12/02/2008, -0/+10Sorry to hear. However, these cameras don't stop speeders.
People are killed by non-speeders every day.
People are killed by people eating in their cars every day.
People are killed by people dropping their cigarette in their lap every day. - DangerCollie, on 12/02/2008, -0/+10...and post-it notes are the cure, Mr. Anderson.
- Remelox, on 12/02/2008, -1/+11Problem is, speeding is only a factor in traffic fatalities and is rarely the actual cause. Yes, speeding can turn a injury into a fatality but the other traffic rules in place and common sense can keep the fastest from accidents. The most important of which is not driving too fast for conditions.
Regardless of the posted limit, there is a limit placed on you specifically by the weather, the road, your vehicle, your skill, and the drivers around you. Stop someone from speeding and it doesn't change unsafe lane changes, blowing through lights, and general reckless driving.
While it is nice to reduce the severity of the accidents and in some cases the frequency, it does not change the driving habits of the driver that cause the accidents. A cop watching you drive can cite you for multiple violations. If I were a cop and didn't have to worry about a quota, I would give speeders a pass if they were driving safely. I'd pull over every person who made an unsafe lane change or drove aggressively.
I speed a bit but I do not tailgate, I use a lot of caution when changing lanes, and I do not do so in traffic or on normal streets. I speed on nearly empty highways and generally only when the people around me are speeding or when there are no people around me. That camera would nab me but not the idiot racing ahead of everyone at the legal speed limit to merge late with inches to spare before a construction zone.
I'm sorry about what happened to your father but the speeder that killed him probably had much worse driving habits. The fact that they were speeding simply accentuated those habits. - crapbox, on 12/02/2008, -2/+12Had a story in Australia about someone coming back and snipering the overpass cameras.
- arcticblue, on 12/02/2008, -3/+13Cut him some slack. He accidentally apostrophe I'm sure.
- Testiculese, on 12/02/2008, -0/+9Yea, it's just a free revenue source. They don't want points on your license because then you can't drive and they can't steal more money from you.
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -1/+10which is why they are such a scam. If it were a real ticket that affected the points on your DL and your insurance rates you might pay more mind to the citation. As it is, most people just say "meh", pay the $50, and get on with it. This has nothing to do with public safety, it's just a free money stream for the state. Thank goodness there was a scandal and outcry here in NC and the company got booted out of business here.
- ElectroStep, on 12/02/2008, -0/+9I was hoping this was a more of a How To style article...
- SanjayM, on 12/02/2008, -1/+10You heard wrong.
- vertigo32, on 12/02/2008, -1/+101. Manufacture speed cameras
2. Sell replacement speed cameras to municipalities after they are vandalized
3. Profit
Hey, I eliminated the ???.
Destroying speed cameras only causes more of your tax money to be given to the manufacturers of those cameras. That increases their profit margins and it lets them lobby to sell them in more places. - drewpost, on 12/02/2008, -4/+12My major problem with speed cameras is that they, after installing them, take the cops off patrol in the area. Speed cameras are great at catching unaware idiots (seriously, the thing is bright yellow and reflective and there are giant white lines in the middle of the lane, how do you miss it!?) but they do nothing for catching really dangerous drivers such as drunk drivers, drivers who tailgate aggressively, drivers weaving in and out of lanes, etc etc. By relying on this instead of good old fashioned patrols, they are actually doing the public more a disservice. I don't mind them as a tool but let's face it, they are easy to evade and don't truly protect us from dangerous drivers.
- silveradorob97, on 12/02/2008, -4/+11If they want to take my picture then they should take the picture of police cars speeding and breaking the law, just because they think they are above the law. It would serve them right to get a ticket in the mail..
- blacktriangle, on 12/02/2008, -0/+7A very 'inspiring' article.
- Testiculese, on 12/02/2008, -0/+6Don't forget cops and cellphones. I see more cops on them then civilians.
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -1/+7Since when were speeding tickets about protecting the public?
- Aethirig, on 12/02/2008, -0/+6They should have a cruiser guarding every speed camera at all times. :D
- phantom_mullet, on 12/02/2008, -0/+5Spontaneous apostrophes are a plague on our streets.
- ScottyAnimal, on 12/02/2008, -3/+7They sleep on the job enough as it is. Make them pull their car out from the overpass and come get me.
- flannelback, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4Speeding tickets are easy to write - that's why they get written.
Got nothing to do with safety. - sindex, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4Nice appeal to emotion. Sadly, there's no logic whatsoever in your thought process. Cameras don't stop accidents. Cameras don't record the identity of someone who plows into a busload of kids, the person driving the smoking wreck of a vehicle will be pretty obvious. Speeding is already illegal. Cameras don't make it "more" illegal, all they do is make money, and further can be abused by the police force into big-brother style monitoring.
There are civil suits already over cities using abbreviated light cycles in order to catch people running red lights in order to generate additional revenue. That's right - the existence of the camera & the abuse by the governmental bodies in control of them is actually CAUSING people - some of whom are not even speeding at all - to "break the law" and endanger people.
To equate, on any level, someone going 5 miles over the speed limit to a "crazed gunman killing kids in a school," or a terrorist plotting to blow up a school is not only unfounded, it's irrationally stupid. - danthemanhan, on 12/02/2008, -4/+8Plus, they're really ugly.
- samcrut, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3If I was wanting to take down a camera, a nice pack of rust dust mixed with aluminum powder with a 4th of July sparkler should take it down pretty easy. It's called thermite.
- kirado4, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3they don't..
- Remelox, on 12/02/2008, -4/+7Like the sun. Let's put out the sun! Also solves the global warming issue.
- Testiculese, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3What a knee-jerk, irrational post. I have some information for you: *Non-speeders kill...every day.* Just thought you'd like to know, since you obviously don't!
Sindex, the (illegal) short amber times mixed with cameras are also responsible for creating more accidents. People see the 'Photo Enforcement' sign, the light turns yellow, and they slam on the brakes so they don't get a ticket, and get plowed from behind. There was a study on quite a few intersections that had these cameras, and the accident rate went up 66%.
'Safety' my ass... - GiggleStick, on 12/02/2008, -1/+4Ph.D. holders never lie.
- 8347, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2There is a good chance your father was killed BECAUSE of the speed camera. When governments install speed cameras they reduce the yellow light time to get more tickets (profit). People end up slamming on their brakes at intersections causing more accidents.
- iridesce, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2You do remember that those 'legislators' voted to give the finance injury unknown trillons of dollars even though their consitutents let them know by a conservative ratio of 90-10 against such madness.
Its not that the people don't know, its just that the bureaucrats make too much money not siding with them - inactive, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2PhantomPlate - Manufacturer of Photoblocker Spray. Buy anti red light and speed camera protection. Make your license plate invisible to cameras.
