- masonga95, on 06/01/2009, -1/+24Is it just me, or are lasers just AWESOME?
- Firstdaughter, on 06/01/2009, -0/+16FTA: "In a study published in the specialist journal Nature Physics, a team led by Jean-Yves Bigot of the Institute of Materials Physics and Chemistry in Strasbourg employed a "femtosecond" laser, using ultra-fast bursts of laser light, to alter electron spin and thus speed up retrieval and storage"
:) :) :)
My question is when will WE be able to use this technology? - JYoungest1, on 06/01/2009, -3/+18Your an idiot.
- Shwaavay, on 06/01/2009, -1/+15Here fast refers to how fast the laser can be turned on and off.
- CaptainLando, on 06/01/2009, -0/+12I'm disappointed that so many comments seem to reflect the notion that advances in technology are unimportant until they are accessible by the general public in consumer electronics.
I'd like to remind everyone that innovations in technology have to start somewhere, and that place is usually in research labs. I wish we were less like consumers and more like innovators and creators. - borez, on 06/01/2009, -0/+8Oh OK.
/at whatever the ***** it was you said. - GreenNoise, on 06/01/2009, -2/+10Don't feed the trolls.
- LoneWolf01, on 06/01/2009, -0/+7FTA: "Femtosecond lasers currently measure around 30 centimetres (12 inches) by 10 centimetres (four inches) which means they are too big for consumer electronics, he cautioned.
Bigot added, though, that their miniaturisation is likely to be achieved over the next decade."
In the next decade, apparently. - alpharaptor, on 06/01/2009, -2/+9how fast do lasers usually go?
- pgoetz, on 06/01/2009, -0/+7Um, what? You have no idea what you're talking about. 1) disk = hard drive 2) most bottlenecks in modern systems are I/O rather than CPU related; i.e. delays are caused be reading/writing to disk; so much so that all modern operating systems cache disk writes to increase performance. This, however, leads to other problems (see the recent controversy about the initial release of ext4 for an example).
- ChiffX, on 06/01/2009, -1/+8roughly 3.0 * 10^8 m/s in a vacuum
- LoneWolf01, on 06/01/2009, -1/+7Look at his comment history. He trolls here all the time. Just ignore it.
- plaguepony, on 06/01/2009, -2/+7Can I put one on a shark?
- AndrewMoyer, on 06/01/2009, -0/+5hard drives with frickin laser beams...
- Firstdaughter, on 06/01/2009, -0/+5When others get a hold of the technology they may be able to speed along this process. One can only hope.
BTW did anyone else chuckle at this scientist's name? Bigot? :D - CRCulver, on 06/01/2009, -0/+4As fast as the shark can propel himself.
- HamstaMan, on 06/01/2009, -0/+4Well, for starters. Every part of a computer is a potential bottleneck, and often it is indeed the hard drive. Which means no matter how fast your CPU is you won't be able to load a program any faster.
- Defiant001, on 06/01/2009, -0/+4I think your period key is broken on your keyboard, actually I mean..
the keyboard key,,,, i think broken is on you keybaord,, haha =P - billizm, on 06/01/2009, -0/+3It depends on the medium light is passing through. "Light speed" is the speed light travels in a total vacuum. Light actually travels slower when passing through things that refract light, such as air and liquid.
- Helloween2008, on 06/01/2009, -1/+4this has profound implications for porn
- armo, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2Somewhat unrelated, but yes, lasers are awesome
https://lasers.llnl.gov/ - robme, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2Data was retrieved with a burst that lasts just a millionth of a billionth of a second.
...and I jizzed in my pants. - Wayfarer12, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2Thanks, that makes sense. Learn something new every day.
- HamstaMan, on 06/01/2009, -2/+4But in the long run, will it be able to keep up with SSD technology?
- Rahvyn, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2Also at the speed of light. However, In this case "ultra-fast" refers to the number of times it can be toggled off/on in a given time period.
- nickmdp, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2This man is clearly a Bigot, and if you disagree, you are an idiot
- Defiant001, on 06/01/2009, -1/+3pew pew?
- inactive, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1Looks like certainty of the uncertainty principle is uncertain...
- gamepr0, on 06/01/2009, -1/+2wait let's see, uhm, what about light speed?
- manjar, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1I love phrases like "pointing the way to a new generation of IT wizardry."
- inactive, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1Let me guess. This technology is about "10 years away"? (They all always are)
- darienphoenix, on 06/01/2009, -6/+7You're an idiot.
- Inspiron08, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1"ultra-fast lasers", lasers travel at the speed of light this must mean they developed some sort of faster than light beam o boy let the paradox start. Terminators will also probably be here soon.
- Defiant001, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1That animation was awesome to say the least, I want one of whatever that thing was..
- chrisduser, on 06/01/2009, -1/+2Most of will be 50-60 or dead. Damn time, you ***** bastard.
- idathunkit, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1299 792 458 meters per second.
In 1983, the definition of a meter was actually changed to make this exactly true. - ripple123, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1yeah. but we get these sorts of stories all the time, they always tell us what these breakthroughs could be useful for, but they almost never pan out. its like crying wolf. at some point we just wanna watch the annoying little ***** get chewed up by a rabid pack of wolves.
- FredFredrickson, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1It's not just you. Lasers are indeed awesome.
- Nudar, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1More so when they're attached to sharks.
- TeenReader, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1wohoo thank goodnees for being a teenager
- robbob, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1now I'm back to loving the French
- billizm, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1Man, that is kind of harsh. You're a dick, even if the Austin Powers reference wasn't funny.
- Elude107, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1I'm pretty sure that by "Ready to ignite the possibilities" they mean "this crazy reaction is going to destroy the universe"
I'm down, it'll probably look ***** awesome - Defiant001, on 06/01/2009, -2/+2warp 10
- Myztry, on 06/01/2009, -1/+1Well if you had an ultra fast electrical relay, you wouldn't say it produced ultra fast electricity...
I knew what they meant - it was just poorly phrased. - Wayfarer12, on 06/01/2009, -2/+2Doesn't all light travel at the speed of light?
- LoneWolf01, on 06/01/2009, -1/+1This looks like it could well change the way we store data, even if it is staying in the same vein as current hard drives.
I wonder what the price will be like in comparison to solid state in a decade. Will there be a format war like no other? RAM-based memory versus disk-based? - Myztry, on 06/01/2009, -2/+2Lasers travel at the speed of light, so how fast does an ultra-fast laser travel?
- insomniacal, on 06/01/2009, -1/+1The Matrix is coming ...
- iamthearm, on 06/01/2009, -5/+4It's BS until I see it on the store shelves in twenty years. And then another ten for the price to go down.
