- Snarfalunch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Story is an urban myth, i.e., a falsehood. The term bug was not originated, nor could the term debugging, from this fairy tale. See

"Yea guys i just deratted my computer" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I worked for a while at NSWC Dahlgren. Always heard that this "bug" was on display at a museum on base but never actually went there. I wonder if it's still there?
- oringo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To Snarfalunch,
This may not be the first "bug" in its modern definition, but certainly the first literal "computer bug" to our knowledge. - directedition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You want to see bugs in computers, come to West Virginia in lady bug season.
- geekster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've seen it in my textbook before...
- uglymike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe thats what I have in my router!?
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, I've seen a bug, but what does a glitch look like?
- MoNickels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is, of course, rubbish if you're believing it's the origin of a computer bug. Even Wikipiedia has it correct. Edison wrote the following words in a letter to an associate in 1878: "It has been just so in all of my inventions. The first step is an intuition, and comes with a burst, then difficulties arise—this thing gives out and [it is] then that "Bugs"—as such little faults and difficulties are called—show themselves and months of intense watching, study and labor are requisite before commercial success or failure is certainly reached."
- agiletech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could it not truly be the first case of a real bug found (that caused problems) in a modern computer system?
Perhaps the claim that this is where the term "debugging a computer program" could be debated but I don't think the picture is fake. Maybe it should be labeled "first recorded evidence of a bug in a computer system". - TheCardinal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's been a long time since I've seen that picture.
- 200iso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i used to have a printout of that on taped to my wall.
- OregonTrail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This was dugg lilke a couple months ago with a higher res pic...
- wrinkles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While that moth in 1945 was certainly not the origin, I imagine at some point in the 1800s, some darned bug must have originated the term. Or at least the presumption of a real physical bug.
- CovardeAnonimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Snarfalunch, the comment on mark II's log is what's known as "sarcasm". got it ? a computer bug caused by an actual, real life "bug". something worth mentioning.
- kzinti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finding the moth is not a falsehood; it really happened, and I've seen Grace Hopper talk about it in interviews. The falsehood is that this finding launched the term "bug" for a glitch in a computer or other system. The term was already in use (read the Byte article or the OED), and the text of the log entry cleary implies this. "First actual bug": that strongly suggests that figurative bugs - glitches - had already been found and probably were plentiful.
- Gronkk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The text "first case of bug being found" is a bit suspicious
The whole thing stinks if you ask me... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah... dupe.
- l124rd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+Digg for the second comment alone ~_^
- fuzzboxer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone who is a programmer should know this.
- JohnTheLutheran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought Snarfalunch's comment was quite helpful as I hadn't come across that debunking before. But the fact the story has been widely misunderstood/misinterpreted doesn't make the story itself a "falsehood". I thought it was a nice little story - a fun bit of computer history.
- CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I always heard it that way but it was a vaccuum tube, not a relay. Maybe they were just referring to the tubes as a relay or the myth as it was told to me isnt entirely true.
- czack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like digg and everything, often has the stories before /. But i'll be damned if the users don't post the stupidest comments and argue about the most miniscule things. Go read a ***** textbook and then maybe you'll have the knowledge to comment on this story. Otherwise, just shut the ***** up. Oh, btw, yes, a bug was found in one of the early computers causing it not to work correctly, effectivly coining 'bug'
- InvisionUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"What utter bollocks!"
Erm. No. This is very documented. Grace has done numerous interviews about it throughout the world. It's very real. I thought it was common knowledge (you know, like the fact that Europe is a continent), but apparently not. - TomJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0_Moths in the Machine_
