Pentax rumored to be readying K20D, K200D DSLRs
engadget.com — Interesting little bit of info -- I'm not sure if these are the model that can use lenses from their SLR cameras or not, but the technical specifications and feature info sounds very impressive...

- Phantom76, on 11/27/2007, -21/+2Who is Pentax?
- Rhuantavan, on 11/27/2007, -1/+4I just hope this rumor is true. I almost bought the K10D, but now I'll definitely wait.
- cawpin, on 11/27/2007, -2/+3So do I. My wife bought a Nikon D50 and it is a great camera. It's all we use know. She had a Canon Rebel film camera before and my (20 year old) Pentax SF-10 took far superior pictures than it did. If these rumors are true I may be able to get some more use out of the lenses I have.
- bieber, on 11/27/2007, -1/+1Hate to break it to you, but when you're shooting film, the camera doesn't determine image quality: the skill of the user does.

- PorcupineTree, on 11/27/2007, -10/+2I can't read this article without thinking that Pentax is lagging way behind Canon in the dSLR market - I mean, I've been drooling over that Canon 40D for some time. Anyways, I've never used a Pentax camera but let's hope that the technical aspects turn out as good as they sound.
- Proctor, on 11/27/2007, -11/+33FPS? Kidding me?
- alanr19, on 11/27/2007, -11/+5uhhh who the hell would be sad enough to spread "rumors" about pentax cameras? This has viral marketing written all over it.
Pathetic effort. - devobergso, on 11/27/2007, -1/+11I'm currently using a K100D and so far it has been great. Everybody is always stuck on Canon and Nikon but I think that Pentax has the possibility to be a big player in the DSLR market as well.
- JAKN, on 11/27/2007, -1/+6only if they start cranking out many more lenses
- Gunsotsu, on 11/27/2007, -1/+7Pentax has always been the bastard child in the camera market despite being around longer than anyone else. Pentax has a lot going for it. Near Mac like loyalty from their customers, every lens ever made to fit a Pentax will work on their dSLRs (with the appropriate adapter), and an understanding by their devotees that it's not the camera that makes the picture, but rather the shooter behind the eyepiece. A fact that is lost on the snobs that think that only Nikon and Cannon make quality dSLRs.
- KevinWhite, on 11/27/2007, -0/+12They've only actually been the bastard child of the DIGITAL camera market. They were a powerhouse back in the days of SLRs. First Japanese company to produce an SLR camera and continued strong until digital took over. They were incredibly slow to adapt to the digital market and are just now starting to get popular again (with the K100D and K10D).
- senatorpjt, on 11/27/2007, -3/+4Yeah, when I was in High School, there was a hardcore photographer in my class. He had a Pentax. That's all I can really say about it. Although, I have a Nikon N6006, and I'm looking into getting a DSLR. I like the fact that all my lenses, even the 40-year-old ones, will work on my new camera. And, if I ever go to a garage sale and see a Nikon lens, I know it'll work.
- bakunin, on 11/27/2007, -3/+3There are laws against hardcore & teens.
- selrahc, on 11/27/2007, -0/+5That's the great thing about Pentax you don't actually need adapter to mount any lenses except the old screw mount lenses(which will mount on Canon and a few others with adapters too). I would say Pentax probably has the best backward compatibility of all the camera manufacturers. I use an *ist DS exclusively with old manual focus lenses and it works better than the K-1000 did with them.
- jonr, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4I always have had a soft spot for Pentax. Their cameras and lenses are top notch, and a bit eccentric. (77mm portrait lens? Zoom fisheye? Getouttahere!).
I still love my Olympus E-3, however. Olympus too has always been a bit different. (No E-3 on the frontpage, but future Pentax, bah!)- MikeGrenade, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4Can't forget pancake lenses.
- mz00m, on 11/27/2007, -0/+5This is great news for me. As an *istDL owner, I'm glad that Pentax will be taking back some market share. Just means there will be more used lenses and a better selection of Pentax SLR compatible gear!
- RocketSeason, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3So I should probably wait then and see what January brings? Is it a replacement, or will the 100Ds still be available at a lower cost?
- KevinWhite, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2As a general rule, you should never really buy any camera until after PMA. Newer, better cameras are released, and the older models are discounted. And yes, they will be replacements, but of course you should still be able to find the older models on store shelves.
- selrahc, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3You can already get the K100D for under $400 at some websites, although I'm not sure if you can trust some of them,. I doubt they will get too much cheaper than that before they run out of stock. I bought the *ist DS after the DL and K100D had come out for about $400 and they never really got much cheaper than that.
- Kallius, on 11/27/2007, -3/+3I made the mistake of buying my first and only Pentax, an E10, largely because of the "Pentax" name. Biggest mistake of mine was not trying it out in the two-week grace period that Best Buy gives customers. The camera is a complete waste of money; the pictures it takes are garbage regardless of how much you fiddle with the settings, and it drains battery power faster than a casino drains money from a bad gambler. Bottom line is that if Pentax puts its name on crap like that, I'm disinclined to buy ANYTHING from them.
- KevinWhite, on 11/27/2007, -2/+2I agree with you completely, Pentax should not put their name on that garbage of a camera. All the cameras in Pentax's line are made by Pentax except one. I bet you can guess which one. The E series is a cheap Chinese OEM that Pentax stamps their name on solely to meet a price point (extremely inexpensive). I think this does more harm for Pentax than good. People, like yourself, buy this camera and quickly come to the conclusion that it sucks and are turned off the Pentax brand. It's a shame, because the cameras that Pentax does produce are quite good.
- shockingbird, on 11/27/2007, -1/+2That's the same thing I've heard from Pentax E10 owners is the major battery drainage.
- inferno10, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4Pentax point-and-shoot cameras and DSLRs are two vastly different beasts, especially in terms of quality. Their P&S line sucks, to be frank. I refuse to go near any of their P&S cameras. On the other hand, their DSLRs though are top notch. The camera body feels rock solid. I've owned their *ist DL and currently own the K100D, both of which have withstood many beatings during my travels. If the rumors prove true, I'll consider the D20, but most likely get the D200.
- inferno10, on 11/27/2007, -0/+5Well, I'm an idiot. I meant to say I'd consider the Pentax K20D and K200D, NOT the Canon 20D or the Nikon D20 or Nikon D200. Why must cameras from different companies have such similar model numbers? It gets confusing at times!
- davmacbea, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4I have the K10D and I'm really happy with it - I don't understand why Pentax aren't more popular. I've used Canons and Nikons of similar price but you get less for your money. The Pentax has shake reduction, seals all round and it's made of metal which puts it amongst mid-range Cannons and Nikons, not the entry-level ones that cost the about the same as the K10D. The best thing is all the old lenses you can get on Ebay though. My f1.7 50mm manual focus prime was really cheap and it takes excellent photos.
I kind of hope the K20D and K200D aren't super popular though as there will be less old lenses on Ebay for me!- inferno10, on 11/27/2007, -0/+5The problem for Pentax is brand recognition. Others were right in saying Pentax was a big powerhouse in the film market. However, they waited way too long to go into the digital revolution. Because Pentax lagged in brining forth a strong DSLR, Nikon and Canon took the spotlight early. Many of the Pentax devotees are still stuck in the film era as well. This put an impression with the younger generation (which includes me) that Canon and Nikon are strong brands, which they are. But the lack of Pentax's name in the media also made this same crowd poo-poo the less-popular brands. Pentax offers a very robust, affordable DSLR lineup that only is getting better. They just need to keep putting out great products and grab media attention to regain their lost ground.
- beastee, on 11/27/2007, -0/+3If you have not shot a Pentax, dont crap on what you do not know. Sign me up for the 20d.
- BackDoorAngel, on 11/27/2007, -1/+2I still want them to bring back the K1000
film? anyone?- ketchupkatsu, on 11/28/2007, -0/+0I'm still using my k1000. IMO one of the best cameras ever made
- MattIndustries, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1I picked up the K10D a month ago, and I will have to pick up the K20D. I love the K10D so much, and their DA* lenses have better optics than anything I have seen by nikon and canon in the same price range. The ONLY thing I dislike about pentax is every pentax I have used does not do a real low level format of the card. I love their quality, and have 2 K1000's, just in case. I also had the K100D, not as impressed, but I took some photos people requested prints of for money with it, so can't complain.
- lolo2007, on 02/20/2008, -0/+0This is great news for me. As an *istDL owner, I'm glad that Pentax will be taking back some market share. Just means there will be more used lenses and a better selection of Pentax SLR compatible gear!
