Yeah it's hard to control the media when there's free content distribution, everyone do their part and don't look at these images

- UncommonSense, on 10/12/2007, -8/+63I think the fact that the Pentagon watches YouTube to protect their image is in itself hurting its image.

- GeneralAntilles, on 10/12/2007, -13/+55It's a war, people die. That's what happens in wars. It's a sad and terrible thing, but it happens.
- AkiraXXX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34Feel free to post your own opinion Lakawak, but please don't speak for all the members of the armed forces. As a veteran of ten and a half years, I served to preserve freedom, not totalitarian control of what people see. Americans have the right to know what war looks like. At best, war is a necessary evil that can serve a honorable goal. This fiasco is neither. I served for freedom, not for censorship. The only way to support freedom is through truth, not propoganda and censorship (on either side of the issue).
- FTLJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33Pentagon watching YouTube closely.......... while eating doughnuts.
- joel2600, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32This also seems to state the opinion that the public has no right to witness what actually goes on over there. If you don't believe the fox news reports about how our bombs bring democracy, then you'll have to enlist to find out otherwise.
- Arkonnan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23> On the other hand you have to support the troops, and the people putting their lives on the line every day over there.
Support the troops by telling the truth about what goes on over there. Covering it up and putting a shiny red ribbon on it only makes a mockery of what they've put their lives on the line to accomplish. War is hell. Don't dishonor the sacrifice of our soldiers by making it look any less so. - graystar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Guess what pentagon, you don't control the media anymore.
- returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18"It's a war, people die. That's what happens in wars. It's a sad and terrible thing, but it happens."
Good. And we should be able to see the consequences of our decisions -- that is what freedom is all about. It bothers me when people like you marginalize the consequences of war. Would you feel the same way about war if you lost a loved one, a home, a way of life?
War should always be the last resort. When all other methods fail. Everyone should see, with their plain eyes, the horrors that war brings. They should see body parts and meat strewn across the streets after an artillery shell hits. They should see the video clips of the person before they were hit by that shell, and how they came to become victims. They should see it all, with their eyes kept open the whole time.
You are part of a democracy. You have political power. You are partially responsible for every needless death that occurs. You are not exempt from responsibilty by virtue of the fact that you were born in the United States. You better damn well be informed and willing to suffer the consequences of your actions, cause I certainly won't be a victim of your ignorance and apathy. - mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I'll bet if YouTube posted exactly what videos were watched from IP addresses coming from the Pentagon, you'd find differently, Piglith.
- Scynet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13What did you expect to see? Hippies dancing with flowers? Children playing with Teddybears? Everyone should be able to read the headline and come up with the conclusion that any Youtube videos on this page are going ro pictures of war, and war is cruel.
- mechaboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15It's not that they're watching. It's WHY they're watching, and what actions will be taken if they do indeed decide too much has been shown.
- DasPope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14youtube needs to move to sweden
- jayboyd1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13You're all on report!
- colobikeguy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Regardless of the motivation of the Pentagon, it is manipulation of the information being generated by events occurring in Iraq. The manipulation may be for legitimate reasons (e.g., maintaining morale, ensuring covert actions in the future, ensuring political support for military objectives, etc.) or illegitimate reasons (e.g., manipulation of information related to atrocities, etc.). In either case, the public should be aware of not only the dollar costs of a war, but the human costs in terms of injuries, and deaths of human beings. War is indeed ugly and should only be fought when absolutely necessary. In this case, perhaps a bit more understanding of this reality not only by the public watching Youtube, but President Bush, would have averted what may turn into a civil war and spark a new war in the middle east.
- keeleysam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Images taken by soldiers in the act of duty are automatically public domain.
- gspeed, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16People in the military don't share your views lakawak. Who the hell are you? Have you recently polled all the GIs over there or something. Perhaps you should make your comment less general like ... "some people" in the military don't share your views. Anyways people our tax dollars at work again baby ... got to love it. So wait ... they are fighting them over there so we won't have to fight them over here ... or something. Yet I could have sworn the finger puppets of the Gov't (fox news for instance ... no need to capitalize) are always like "our heroes" are over there fighting for our rights ... so much for freedom of speech. I don't need anybody to fight for my rights anyways ... when that day comes I'll stand up my damn self.
- SoCalDissident, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I wonder if they're hiring! I am HIGHLY qualified for this job, which is a trait my current employer doesn't seem to appreciate.
- athlonmj, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19And you thought the Chinese government was bad.
- FTLJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@Jackcall Actually you just DID warn.. so no one else does. Thank you for your sacrifice, because that video needs to be seen.
- tommylikewingy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Yeah, but they don't have the right to censor certain images or videos because they make America look bad
- peritonlogon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Chinese government is still worse than ours...
But, to clairify any time any person says 'well at least we're not as bad as China' or 'yeah, well you should see what the Chinese govenerment does.' That person, while defending our country, is betraying the fact that now adays you need to put us next to China to make us look good.
I mean, if, while defending you, someone has to resort to 'he's not as bad as Charles Manson,' maybe you should concern yourself with your reputation for a while.
OMG, I just compared China to Charles Manson...and therefore America to Charles Manson inadvertantly. No direct comparison is intended...but sad that the words could even be uttered. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I think it's good that people see these videos. The media puts a sugar coating on war and that's not what's going on........I'm tired of not hearing the truth from big players in this war.
People NEED to see that war is awful. - mechaboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I think that's actually what concerns me most about this article. Because if they really wanted to crackdown on youtube what would stop them? I like to think that things like that can't happen but I've been proven wrong before.
- vbsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@orangeRam
good points, but how big is this "large group" ? I guess it depends. You have these iraqis with such shifting views and people who have strong beliefs that will murder and kill for. How do you cater for everyone's needs? That is why i think bush still has force in iraq for this reason. Its all about a matter of time. Its so complicated that I think people really dont relize there isnt such a straight answer after all. The US was built upon many divides that finally came together in peace, but seems divided once again these days. Its tough to say.
@TopherT
I see where your going, but how do you really seperate facts from propaganda when none of us are in iraq giving out interviews to every person we see on the street? Especially from a country that is having personal troubles, im sure peoples mindsets shift as they attack a new problem. - mongrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You mean like this white phosphorous video? not safe for appetite
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3SU7guWlb8&search=iraq - jbenson2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Hey guys - read the 1st Amendment - The Pentagon has the same rights to watch the videos as you.
- edto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7perhaps its just an excuse for the pentagon guys to watch youtube :)
- xixax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't know how some people can stomach this. I'm sitting here ashamed of what we're doing right now to a point where I'm almost ill. The commentary accompanying the videos, and the pride exhibited over these acts makes me embarassed at the sight of our flag.
I love the ideals of America, but am so thorougly disgusted with it's lack of practice of those ideals. - interiot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Because we really should be spending money to pay people to watch YouTube, rather than either recruiting more troops to relieve the ones there, or on working on getting out of Iraq sooner or later.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@scrubadub
Thank you for posting those. I lost a couple friends in the 2003 invasion and this picture speaks to me.
http://www.thememoryhole.org/war/coffin_photos/dover/casket09.jpg - xgravix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Seems like the pentagon screened out the end of the summary of this article, too... Hmm...
- vbsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13From what I've researched from personal accounts, many Iraq civilians and military personal have been quoted of saying there wouldn't be an Iraq if there wasn't US aid. The majority of Iraq civilians didn't want Saddam to be in power. Yes there are adversaries still out, but its too complicated to be shut down so quickly. All this takes time and at least a country to go out and try. Didn't the US rid of major key players of al quada and are continuing to do so?
- CausticNoise, on 10/12/2007, -12/+16@ Surfer.
You're right. For a country's military institution to try and maintain a positive image doesn't make it the bad guy.
But it doesn't try to maintain that image "so its citizens can go on with their lives." We'd do that regardless.
Do you believe that, as Bush says, "American and the world is safer" due to the military action in Iraq, or are there even more adversaries than ever? *Is* mankind more peaceful (or less unpeaceful) now because of Iraq's invasion? - SYCO66, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Big Brother......Always watching
- orangeRam, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8@ surfer
That's very true, but the problem that currently exists is that there is a large group of iraqi citizens that want an fundamentalist islamic theocracy and rather then be grateful to the Coalition for ousting Saddam, they harbor animosity towards them for the occupation required to ensure a government that they do not want in place takes hold - flakmonk3h, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12dugg for the simpsons reference
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I didn't know they were up to watching, just wiretapping.
- elephantdog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Looks like another war crime. On youtube there are lots of people defending the use of chemical weapons, with comments like "all weapons use chemicals!". Seems pretty obvious phosphorous was used for it's toxic effect there.
- joel2600, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5i can't really say that i support supressing someone else's freedoms of speech and expression ... so no.
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2its censor shi[p and its down right wroong please fight this by telling the truth right on youtube and please push this comment and posting to the top.
- Tsujigiri, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@lakawak
People in the military all have their own opinions (at least they did when I was enlisted), because there's millions of them. They don't share one big group mind-type opinion. If they did, they would be robots. However, they do operate under one order; one command. Don't ever confuse an army's orders for their soldiers opinions though. You'll be wrong every time. - vbsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@5blocksfree
"There is something inherently wrong with a country whose official position entails protecting our freedom by removing our rights."
Give me a break! That's what everyone wants to hear. I'm sure that we can all handle having our full rights with 100% freedom to do what we please...laissez faire...whoopee de doo. Your in dreamland my friend. Life doesn't work that way. You think all the people are responsible enough for such a task? The government has put these protections on their citizens because not everyone knows how to use them and to be responsible enough. There are certain restrictions in place to help sustain law. It's been this way for years... - xofc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's an all-volunteer force. You don't have to join if you don't want.
- jackcall, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I'm a med student, I've dissected humans, still those images made me sick.
I believe freedom should be free and never repressed. But you could at least have warned first, now I have to bury your post... - TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11@vbsurfer
Yes, the major key players of Al Quada which were homegrown in response to the invasion. Great reason for sticking around. Every time anyone uses an argument about terrorism in Iraq you know that their mind doesn't work with facts but propaganda. I don't remember any terrorist action emanating from Iraq or Iraqis just prior to our invasion. Also, fighting a war makes people angry, angry people come together to blow ***** up, we fight a war on terrorism is like fighting a war on belligerence, its self enforcing. Sorry for the rant. -
