***** THE MPAA!
***** THE RIAA! - hawkspur, on 11/12/2009, -0/+23PeerGuardian isn't developed anymore - PeerBlock is based off the same source code.
- Kwipper, on 11/12/2009, -1/+22Oh thank god someone made this.
- The2DQuartet, on 11/12/2009, -1/+19One paragraph on Sourceforge vs Google Code, that's it. The rest of the article is very clear, concise and informative.
- hydrodev, on 11/12/2009, -0/+16I'm getting tired of having to bury you every time you smash your knuckles on your keyboard. Ever thought of contributing something useful?
- chessoriginal, on 11/12/2009, -3/+17sadly, TorrentFreak was blocked and could not conduct an interview.
/s - BigVi, on 11/12/2009, -1/+10Quit your whining please.
- skeptictank, on 11/12/2009, -1/+10I'm not sure how effective PG2 is but I do know that I have not gotten an MPAA warning from my ISP since I started using it. I used to get couple a month on average It is interesting to scan through the logs too see who's tracking torrents though. A lot from Sony and a number of agencies in China.
- twiztidsinz, on 11/12/2009, -0/+9dugg just to spite KevinRowz above
- Jaime2000, on 11/12/2009, -0/+9"It’s commonly known as piracy, but it’s a too benign term that doesn’t even begin to adequately describe the toll that music theft takes..."
...I couldn't believe my eyes at first. The RIAA actually has a statement that online copyright infringement is worse than murder, rape, and theft that takes place on the high seas? - MikeyMoose, on 11/12/2009, -2/+10Peerblock is fantastic, yes, it's an updated PeerGuardian 2 - I thought I just was ignorant of its existence when I found it a month or so ago... Got a nice email from the developer after donating. I'm using it on Win7-64.
- twiztidsinz, on 11/12/2009, -0/+8Another glorious piece of ***** comment by GaltShrugged.
- wpf999, on 11/12/2009, -2/+8You *thought* you were ignorant of its existence?
- BigVi, on 11/12/2009, -1/+7+1, downloading as soon as I get home.
- twiztidsinz, on 11/12/2009, -0/+6It's a fork... and an amazing fork with tons of performance and feature improvements. It has the same base code, but different development team since PG2 is all but dead.
- twiztidsinz, on 11/12/2009, -3/+7Torrents aren't illegal you *****.
And what did you report? A digg name? With no evidence?
Oh.. that's probably good enough for the corrupt as hell RIAA
Go play in traffic you waste of oxygen. - Culyt, on 11/12/2009, -0/+4Same here. Got 2 or 3 notices, started using and nothing for ages. Turned it off, got a notice within a week.
Even if there are ways around the block, it still costs antipiracy companies heaps to buy more ip addresses and makes it a pain in the ass to get them 'under the radar' (ie they have to buy residential connections 1 by 1 and use those). From memory the leaked MediaDefender emails said they where trying to get employees to use their home connections. - ChristPissed, on 11/12/2009, -1/+5The first three sentences of this article succinctly answer your question.
Perhaps a google on its predecessor, "Peergaurdian" would yield a more in depth article. - twiztidsinz, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3I hated how people bashed PG2 all the time in the past because they felt that people thought it would make them immune to agencies like or working for the RIAA/MPAA/BREIN/etc.
But even thought it can't make you immune, it's still 100% more effective than NOTHING.
How effective that is in a quantitative, real world amount? Very hard to tell. - palehorse864, on 11/12/2009, -1/+4Heh, love the Ad for his Dad's BBQ sauce on the peerblock site. I love BBQ though so that's probably why it worked on me. :)
- bkm72, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3Methlabs doesn't develop PG2 anymore, but the block lists are still updated.
- srs2000, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2Hmm.. I've never gotten a single notice in over a decade of downloading. I've never run any blocklists before either..
Makes me wonder if they get sent and I never get them... Are they physically mailed with the post office? or email? or...? - badtzmartin, on 11/13/2009, -0/+2Yes, you'd benefit from using either PG2 or Peerblock.
You'll also benefit from encrypting all torrent communications. - MikeyMoose, on 11/12/2009, -3/+5Um, since it was brand new, yes - I couldn't have been ignorant of its existence if it *didn't* exist, now could I? Did you RTFA?
- aero8, on 11/12/2009, -2/+4Using it right now, pretty awesome. Win7 x64 build 7600.
- twiztidsinz, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2"Seriously, has anyone found any reason to drop peer guardian2 and use peerblock?"
It's updated, it seems more stable, it works on Vista/7 with zero issues/hackery and it's getting new features.
"I know PG2 does not keep updated lists but it's not hard finding recent block lists."
PG2 never had any lists for themselves. They always used BlueTack's lists.
"There are people that swear up and down there's no way to block companies from tracking torrents"
As I've said from the start... It's 100% more effective than NOTHING.
Sure companies can probably tell you're downloading a torrent, but if they're on a blocked IP they probably can't tell which torrent/information you're downloading -- possibly: unless they can snoop around on one of your peer/seeder packets and see they're going to you. - RealmDown, on 11/12/2009, -2/+4Hell, even *I'm* blocking you now. You'll never get a break. ;-)
- banik2008, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2Do it, pussy.
- splosion, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2Digitally signed drivers!
- skeptictank, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1I'm sure there is no foolproof way of preventing being tracked and I'd probably be more concerned if I downloaded torrents all the time but I may grab 2 movies a month tops and I usually end up going to the theater to see them anyway. It's kind of freaky to wake up, open firefox and see an ISP warning page saying "Columbia Pictures...blah, blah will have to terminate your service" come up every few hours for a day or 2. That hasn't happened since I started using PG2 but I've also become very selective about what torrent to snag.
- JamesBondQ, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Just install it.... its going to look very familiar.
- Jaime2000, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1ISPs are able to tell if you are using P2P traffic or not. As for throttling, this article seems to suggest it may be an issue with Comcast:
http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/New-Comcast-Thr ...
I also don't think Peer Guardian 2 will help you, but I guess it can't hurt. - skeptictank, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Seriously, has anyone found any reason to drop peer guardian2 and use peerblock? I know PG2 does not keep updated lists but it's not hard finding recent block lists. I did have an occasional driver issue with it on an older machine but no problems on my current XP SP3. There are people that swear up and down there's no way to block companies from tracking torrents but I have yet to get popped using PG2. The last time I got busted was months ago... for a cam release no less :(
- CraigHwk, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Transmission has a built in blacklist system that automatically downloads the latest list of bad IPs and blocks them from you. It's nice.
- qwer777, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1are there any safety boosts from using this as opposed to ipfilter.dat blocking torrenting ip's? torrenting is the only time I'd need it.
- twiztidsinz, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Well, PeerBlock (and I'm pretty sure PeerGuardian2) can Auto Update every XX days.
PB and PB2 will also log any connections (blocked, allowed, both or none) then remove/archive/do nothing every XX days.
PB and PB2 block all connections as opposed to ipfilter.dat blocking only the connections made from/to the torrent app.
And aside from adding lists, it's a "do nothing" system since everything is updated automatically by default. - Razster, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Just got a nice from Charter about something I didn't even download... So this will be helpful for when they try to catch me downloading something that i downloaded, but they won't because it will be blocked :) muahaha
- dynamitshikoku1, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1I've been using PB for a few months. Gone are the Copyright emails from Comcast. I look at the live block list and love seeing what passes by. HP, Sony, Department of Copyright, freaking China?, State of Texas, Universities, Department of Grain from canada, the list goes on and the list of blocks are HUGE.
Now when i pirate i feel a little safer. - badtzmartin, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1You should also set your torrent program for encrypted communication - both ways, and don't allow unencrypted traffic.
- Amnesia10, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1I was not sure of the status of PeerGuardian for the mac. Having another option is always good. Even if PB comes along and is good, PG is available now. That is something that I shall look at this weekend. Thanks
- badtzmartin, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1It's because no one will come after you for downloading gay porn... ;)
You'll typically get the first notices from your ISP, telling you that they have received notice from a copyright holder. They'll basically tell you that you'd better cut it out, or they'll tell the complainant who you are. - badtzmartin, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1PG works fine on Mac.
- Glauck006, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1Valve sells games and therefore may be interested if you pirate said games...
- Fausterion, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1I've been using this program on Windows 7 64-bit, and so far it's been pretty tight. The only thing I don't get is, why does PB block steam with only the Anti-P2P and Spyware lists selected? It wouldn't be that big of a deal if I didn't have to manually allow 30 different IP addresses just to get steam working properly. Even so, I still see various Valve corporation and limelight entries that are blocked :/
- Glauck006, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1I also thought it was out for a while and that i just missed it, this article clued me into the release date. I've been using PB and it's been working fine, even though I'm so used to the PG2 icon blinking that i don't notice the new icon is blinking....it's not a dark enough blue, and also not round, which my peripheral vision doesn't like. I've been Pavloved by PeerGuardian.
- mheyk, on 11/12/2009, -1/+1Well at least it will take the bureaucrats a couple of months to find this article after they have a few meetings about meetings with a few lunch meetings thrown in there to discuss how this article is relevant to the meeting they had last week about the other meeting about the meeting. Then they will discuss setting a meeting to discuss a meeting about a way they can ban this application once they finish with this meeting to plan for another meeting, but first they have to cancel a few meetings to fit this meeting in.
- crackerjack20, on 11/12/2009, -2/+2So I've just started using BitTorrent, and I have Comcast broadband. I'm a complete dummy about all this. Are they able to tell I'm downloading torrents? And if so, will they throttle my speed or send me a warming or something? Would I benefit from using this Peerblock program?
- Amnesia10, on 11/12/2009, -2/+1Well as a mac user I am left out for now, but have copied the RSS link to get news of the mac versions. This looks like a great solution to the hassle from the RIAA etc.
- cplusplus, on 11/12/2009, -6/+3Is there an article (or something) explaining the need for this kinda thing?
