- JibberJabber, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40I hope other bands and record companies start doing the same.
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Me too. I really respect Pearl Jam for what they're doing. Plus they have a great sound.

- galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The key here is the band is licensing it under Creative Commons. That's the important part - not that the video is free.
- Niffer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@CharlesDarwin
It's not that you spoke the truth that got you modded down, but more the fact that what you said didn't make much sense. - rideagain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7sark666: There is no such thing as "the creative commons license" -- there are several creative commons licenses. Some allow for commercial use, some don't. All allow for download and redistribution, which is very important, but everyone who releases something under CC gets to pick which particular version of the CC license he/she wants to use.
See http://creativecommons.org/about/licenses/ to learn more about the options that CC gives to the artist. - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Does anyone actually watch music videos anymore? The music is the important thing anyway. And throw my vote into the hat that says the new PJ disc is great. The best release since Vitology.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Like Lewis Black (more or less, I don't have the exact quote) said: "Music is for your ear hole. You hear it and you see things. Music VIDEOS are for your EYE hole. If what you see when you hear music is anything like the video, kill yourself."
Something like that. He's a good man. - stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@Galfridus73
I think you are underestimating the wealth they've accumulated over the years. Sure, their last two albums did not go platinum, but several of their albums went multiplatinum and most of their shows sell out. Although they don't tour every year, on the years that they do tour I've seen band profits listed at more than $40 million. Now they have a new album which they've been able to release without the constraints of an existing contract, which means they are getting a bigger cut (of course, it remains to be seen if this can make it past the gold mark that the last several albums made and regain the platinum sales of their former years.
BTW, I'm enjoying the new album. If it wasn't for the new Tool album and the Gnarls Barkley, Pearl Jam would be all I was listening to. - bczechowicz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Pearl Jam keeps staying a step ahead of others in the industry.
They revolutionized the live bootleg industry. They are arguably one of the best live bands ever. There's a reason they have such a loyal fan base. - galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@diggitydank: I wouldn't call Pearl Jam rich. They are probably all comfortable, but I doubt they are multi-millionaires. They're a good band that's been around for 15 years and enjoy making music and, every now and then, they try something different to see if they can make things more accessible for their fans (like the concert bootlegs from a few years back, their constant fighting with Ticketmaster, etc.).
Now, if they were U2 or the surviving Beatles, then I would say that it was either to a) turn it into a publicity stunt; or b) to actually try to make a paradigm shift in the music industry. - JW00000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I don't understand why they only provide it free until May 24th. If I now download that video, I can copy and distribute it (non-commercial) legally forever. So why wouldn't people download it from me instead of paying for it?
- galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7It is only until 5/24, but at least it's a step in the right direction.
The new album, btw, rocks. I've been listening to them since 1991... they keep getting better (and odder, but better). - vossman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5video at youtube
http://youtube.com/watch?v=NoFbDtGo-JM - boozedrinker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Truly, I have nothing but respect for this band. You all may remember the fights with overpriced Ticketmaster's oligopoly on their tickets - they fought them and won. If there is one band that may ever release a record to pioneer creative commons, it owuld be them. They care more about their fans than their wallets. Their premise has always been very respectful.
GO PEARL JAM!!!! - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree that its partly a promotional tool (but isn't a music video really a promo tool to buy an album??). Most people don't think about this, but they haven't even made a music video since "Jeremy" got overplayed to death and ruined on MTV. In fact, some of you may remember at the MTV Video Music Awards when they won an award for best video, when accepting the award they said "We don't appreciate this at all." They never made any more videos after that.
For their entire history they encouraged fans to record and trade their concerts. They fought Ticketmaster (unsuccessfully) for a couple of years regarding ticket prices. Doing a Creative Commons video seems like something they'd do. - atelophobee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7despite not being the rock gods they were in the early/mid 90s, they still make money on pretty much all the music, concerts, videos, etc. so this DOES affect the $$ they take in. Not as much as, say, fall out boy or pink right now, but it does. despite this, it's not bad for business IMO:
what an awesome statement by a household-name band, though! PJ becoming the anti-metallica - i like it :D and i agree- i can't wait for more bands to do this. i think it's great exposure and not enough loss of income to not to it (at least every now and then) to hopefully boost support/knowledge of the band. - jinexile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@mateo60
They've had a couple videos since Jeremy, Do The Evolution is the only one I can think of but I'm sure there was a binural video as well, also Oceans (same album as Jeremy) had a video. But yea they are not huge on the corporate scene.
@ all the haters
Pearl Jam is one of the few bands that really care about their fans, they are willing to go to bat, at their own expense, for the fans. They're not fancy but they always put on a good concert, with 2 or more encores. They fight the large corporations that want to reem the consumers for their last dollars and as a result they have never really achieved the fame that they should. They make good music, and are willing to experiment, yea they've had some pretty bad albums as a result (vitology) but it keeps things fresh and that's probably been a key part of their success, while not major, they are pretty much the only grunge band to make it out of the 90s intact. - Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Charles Darwin? I don't remember him being such a retard... Insult to a great mind =(
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually, they fought Ticketmaster and loss.
http://tinyurl.com/r5xw6
"Pearl Jam continued to battle Ticketmaster in 1995, but the Justice Department eventually ruled in favor of the ticket agency."
But it gained them respect for artists against the big corporations getting greedy. Most say it was actually a win for PJ, in many respects. - Agabus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Very pleasing to hear. Pearl Jam is a good band, I hope this gets some decent attention from other bands/record labels. I'm going to go download the video now. Cheers for the article.
I just noticed it's available through Google Video. Although I know you can manually make that into an AVI to be saved on your computer, it would have been nice to have the original good quality video available as a download, rather than stream. Nevertheless, streaming video is better than no video. - scootdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, it's not Rock... but Boards of Canada basically did the same thing with their first ever video "Dayvan Cowboy," from the ever innovative record company WARP. I like it. Since MTV doesn't do videos anymore anyway, it's better to have them on demand. http://www.warprecords.com/dayvancowboy/
- br0ck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The list of bands that hit it big in the late 80's thru early 90's and are still together and commercially viable may be bigger than you think. Just off the top of my head are NIN, Nirvana as Foo Fighters (ok, I admit, that's a stretch), Tool, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Depeche Mode, Beastie Boys, Silverchair (just had a critically acclaimed album), Primus, Radiohead, and the Smashing Pumpkins (recording a new album). In fact I'm having a much easier time thinking of bands that are still around than bands that have failed.
- kevinisms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is great! Why don't more bands do this. A video is just a commercial for the album, anyway.
- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The only bad thing is, if more bands start doing this, especially with albums, the RIAA is going to take a "We've got to kill them to save them" stance. You know how they loooooove to play the "we're protecting the artist" card.
RIAA regulations are just like every other bad law: put into place under the guise of "this is to protect you". - swindmill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3These are the people that like popular music, and once a band is no longer selling multi-platinum, these people just assume they must not be so great anymore. If you asked the band, they would say they are just now starting to peak. Pearl Jam is happier with this album than any release to date, and they should be. Someone who listened to each release and gave it a chance would not be saying they peaked in the 90s. They've evolved, matured, and become a much better band.
- crazyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's really at a time like this where you have to say 'Thank You'.
- actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm getting dugg down for requesting the reasoning behind a specualtive statement?
- Shipley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3the did release the first single from the new album as a free download...
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Good to see them return to their anti-establishment ways. They caved with ticketmaster, but gave them a fight for a while. That's more than anything other artists had done. Hopefully this will catch on with a few other musicians.
- .mark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Anyone else find it funny how there are always the constant "Pearl Jam was really great in the 90s" and "Does anyone listen to them anymore" type of comments?
They're one of very few bands to start, hit it big and make it out of that era and still be around today. And while the record sales aren't great; it seems many of these people have no idea how successful their tours are... - poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4We already ~were~ able to. It just wasn't legal. (Or enforceable.)
- galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@BeachSide: I think the issue with the album is it sounds like a lot of their old stuff... I can see this being a follow-up to Ten. Pearl Jam has never really seemed to grow too much in their music. In one regards, that's great, because I can always count on them to take me back to my college years when I listen to their stuff. On the other hand... I was in college 15 years ago and I do actually prefer who I am now to who I was then...
Still think it's a good album, though. ;) - corduroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dunno... i think that "RIAA Crap" is that music that has simple - repeating beats and lyrics with no meaning. kinda of like 'n Sync and Backstreet Boys.
but this is definitely one weird video. - checker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Clip should be in Beta phase, I'm waiting for Release candidate.
- scottysmith, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1cool, lets copy distribute and share!! glad to hear of the new album...about time, pearl jam rock
- MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Anyone have a link to the video that is NOT google video or youtube? Flash video is just so ugly.
Edit: Nevermind. Looks like the google video version is the official one from the band. Ugh. - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yes, many still watch music videos.
- jzimmerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@br0ck
While I agree that hose are some great bands that are in fact still around, how many of those bands do you hear on mainstream pop radio?
That was the point I think. Most of the people who were complaining that Pearl Jam peaked in the 90's only listen to the mainstream pop radio.
How many off of your list get mainstream attention from the pop audience?
Red Hot Chili Peppers with some of their more tame songs, some of the Foo Fighters maybe.
But really that is about it. If you really want to hear stuff from the other groups (including Pearl Jam) you go buy their album, go to a concert, or listen to a radio station catering to that genre of music. - jzimmerman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It is only free until may 24th most likely because they don't want to keep paying for bandwidth.
The probably figure it will be in the P2P/bittorent networks by then and they won't need to worry about it.
Sure you can still distribute and copy the video freely, they just don't want to pay for the bandwidth. So share it among youselves instead of grabbing it from their website. - SgtCrispy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Cool. Been a PJ fan for quite awhile and it's nice to see them do stuff like this for the fans.
I hope other bands follow their lead and do the same. - checker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3It is a beautiful day for free world.
- yattacheese, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you don't like Flash video, you could always just download the MP4 file.
- paolonorte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yes, like new album, willing to like Pearl Jam again, all is forgiven Eddie
- CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I clicked on it from thier site and it took me to Google Video, where I downloaded an iPod version.
- rideagain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1JW00000, that's a good question. I wish they said something about that on their web site.
- Portfolioso, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3w00t. Pearl Jam r0xors
I still like their old albums better though. Ten was classic. For some reason I can't get into Worldwide Suicide - vvaduva, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8Great news...too bad the video sucks..
- tackle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Pearl Jam's "I am Mine" song (from Riot Act) is one of my all time favorites. I've never really listened to any of their other songs. When I realized that they just came out with a new album, I was really excited. I got the album and listened to it several times. There are a couple of good catchy songs. But, the rest were sub-par. It left me disappointed. Maybe they are not as good as I thought they were or maybe I should check out their "older" albums.
On a related note. I checked out the new "Stadium Arcadium" album from RHCP. It is a killer. I highly recommend it. - zentro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Super Dugg!
