- SpectreBlofeld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Sorry submitter, I won't be using this until PayPal follows the same rules that protect us from our banks.
Paypal blows.
Is submitter a PayPal plant? - betterth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Wow, not only do we get the convience of a company who can legally liquidate your entire account at the drop of a dime for no apparent reason and arbitrate any claim against them by a member, but we get it everywhere?
Let's not forget that they also illegalize chargebacks against them, so when they rob you blind and tell you that their "decision" in the matter is that "you're wrong", legally you have to bend over and say 'Here's my ass, sir. Do with it what you will." - ZekeSulastin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19... until PayPal decides to randomly freeze your account ...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17If you don't have a business account then you can't receive funds from credit cards and if you do have a business account is is 3-4% out of each transaction ... thanks but no thanks Paypal.
My behind already hurts from the continual ass raping you do every time I make a transaction... God forbid that transaction is done on EBay and I get doubly raped.
btw I hate you Paypal... I hate you! - bscott86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I want to see Google's response in a few weeks... and a commission price war.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10paypal has a horrible privacy policy
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yeah, I'm going to use this for a friend who owes me $20? Hardly. First, paypal will take 29 cents. Then they will take 3%. So they're going to take 89 cents off the top.
Second, figure it will probably require one text message to paypal. One back from them. And then a third for confirmation. Then at least one message for the other person. That's four text messages at the going rate of 10 cents each. So now it's $1.29. So my friend is paying $20 and I'm getting $18.71. No thanks. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11My account is frozen right now and could be resolved any time in the next 30 days...yay!
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I have always wanted a system like this, but it's too bad I hate paypal for the insane fees.
- nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13I'd never use it.
Hell, I don't use Pay Pal now as it is. - cliche_kitty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Seems cool, but then you have to convince the rest of America that text messaging is not a fad.
- allarise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5...why wouldn't you just buy the item right there on the spot instead of texting an item# ?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Millions of people use paypal for Ebay without problem, and they will trust it, I've got no reason not to trust them myself
- doit3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5So, now I can get raped with pp charges via mobile... No thanks, an ATM is cheaper for me.
- mrmontrose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5how is this easier than swiping a card?
- rekrapt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6PayPal = 666
- SpectreBlofeld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Why do you trust PayPal in spite of all the PayPal horror stories?
Just curious.
I stopped using Ebay altogether except for vendors that took alternate forms of payment after reading about people that got fsked over by PayPal. - joel.smith, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8As an online business owner, I can tell you, from experience, that PayPal horror stories are manifested by the stupidities of the individual account holders. Too many times have I called to verify an order and the account holder says that they had received--and have fell for--an obvious phishing attack.
And, as MoeB stated, these stories are often blown way out of proportion. - RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6WTF? Why is this article so obviously slanted TOWARDS PayPal... I'm sorry... I guess I had the assumption that (digg.com submitter == tech person == smarter than a box of rocks)
PayPal is a necessary evil. Nothing about them is "Awesome." They charge fees that my local loan shark is jealous of... and to top it off - they remove any kind of protection you have when you buy with a credit card through them...
http://paypalsucks.com is a website everyone should check out (yeah, any website ending with "sucks" is obviously biased) - they have a listing of things that PayPal is doing that are really scary.
Reported as Spam. No way in hell any non-employee could be this pro-PayPal... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Isan't ANYONE going to complain about the ridiculous "just read and start using this" description?
Do you WORK for PayPal? - hackman7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6i love the microscopic images techcrunch provides...
- Scik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"PayPal Mobile is available to employees for a limited trial release."
I think I will wait. All the rumors are scary enough about PayPal freezing accounts without bombarding their new mobile trial for employees.... - shizeon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Anyone else remember when Paypal first came out they offered a PalmOS app that allowed you to transfer money to people by beaming via IR. Granted you had to sync your pda to have the transaction take effect, but I thought it was pretty cool. It was sad to see them ditch it. I have a feeling this one will be around for much longer.
- Night201, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That was fast. I got the confirmation call like 2 seconds after I submitted my request to activate my cell phone!
- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4All you need is a Premier account actually. Ever price a merchant account? I'd take Paypal over a merchant account and setting up a billing system anyday.
- philliplowe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm one of those people who got it screwed by paypals random freezing.
Believe the horror stories. - MadKennyP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I had PayPal on my Palm--back in the day--and could "beam" money to friends. It was great if we were at lunch and someone put the tab on his credit card, then you could just beam the amount you owed. I believe that was the *only* way to use PayPal in those days, is that right? Oh yeah, AND we got $5 for signing up . . . good times.
- danpsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So would the government, so they can track all your purchases.
- madholepunch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5freaking finally! and get over the privacy crap, there's no such thing as privacy anymore if you want to be a functioning part of society. just watch your back, son!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i always pay using paypal on ebay. it's safe. more than a credit card.
Once i bought a mobile phone, i never received it and paypal gave my money back in a week!!
related news on http://www.awordabout.com - rain9441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sweet, now people can scam me with phones!
Them: "Hey I'll buy that car from you for $1200, ok?"
Me: "Ok!"
Them: "Is it ok if I text-paypal it to you?"
Me: "I guess..."
Them: (pays via paypal using phone)
Me: "Hmmm..."
2 days later...
Them: (takes back paypal payment)
Me: "What the ***** im missing my 1200?" (Calls up paypal to complain)
Paypal: "Sorry sir, we will refund you $300 for the inconvenience, minus our 30$ fee of course.
Me: Screwed.
I don't even trust my friends enough, go to the ATM, get that green paper, and put it in my hands. - cliche_kitty, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I thought, for the free accounts, you were allowed a certain number of credit card transactions per month. Obviously, you exceeded it. Upgrade your account. BTW, it's called the cost of doing business. Money doesn't move itself. Then again, I suppose you can be like Sam's Club. That's why they only accept debit cards, the transactions fees are cheaper.
- pedstrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it means you don't have to swipe a card. usefull for transactions where you don't have a card machine
- DomoDigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"seems like a fad"
that might go on down in the other digg story about bad predictions ;) - danpsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's a great ideal if you don't have people snooping in on what you're doing. Now with the patriot act they can look at you like a terrorist if you pay off a credit card, now let's apply that kind of scrutiny to every purchase.
- thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4geez... it's the geek ideal of living in a cash-less society.... And what about those times when you can't break that 50 your buddy is trying to pay his share with?
- allenu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3And its awesome what? Don't leave me hanging here.
- danpsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"for me to poop on!"
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds pretty convinient. I use Paypal, but sending and recieving money from a Canadian bank account is painfully slow.
What I want to see if actually having the ability to pay physical buisnesses with a cellphone, or (more ideally) my fingerprint (with PIN, or something to make it that extra bit safer)... something to make paying for your everyday purchases even faster. - kibblesnbitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1An expanded image from what mobilecrunch provides directly on their site:
http://mobilecrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/ScreenHunter_15.jpg - lydon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally, I trust PayPal because it is quick and easy and fast and I have used them for AT LEAST 100 personal transactions and never had one problem. But hey, if you want to believe everything you hear, go ahead.
- tylerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my first thoughts on this was... Kevin mitnick intercepting phone calls to just simply listen in on how long ago.......................
now with to days tech, how hard would it be to just be cruising around and say PPcatching, as in intercepting the transaction so it dumps into your paypal account... and also adding a few digits onto the transaction?
I'm sure its safe it just me being well..... paranoid onoes! - shafnitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2TextPayMe did this first. I'll stick with them. They give you $5 for signing up and I won an Xbox 360. I blogged all about it here: http://shafnitz.blogspot.com/2006/03/how-i-won-xbox-360.html
PayPal has never given me anything... - CravenWarhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This should add to my "Drunk out of my Mind" purchasing power. Cant wait to wake up and see I sent some money to somebody that goes by the name Ecstasy.
- Rekkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can I borrow your cell? I just need to send a quick text msg to someone ;-)
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2im gonna start bluesniffing now.
- partisan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2jesus...
yeah, paypal comes with a bit of shadiness and the fees are a little over the top. but, you know, you're probably not going to be texting over your mortgage payments... use it if you need to pay your buddy $6 for some pizza. worst case scenario: every 1,000th time you do it, your share gets eaten by paypal.
i don't want to defend a company that's less than perfect, especially when it comes to online banking, but come on... it's not like paypal is priceritephoto - kuken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, maybe we should all move to Estonia then. Can't wait to experience extreme poverty, all-pervasive STDs, Russian mobsters and what have you.
- chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1***** PayPal. They scam.
