- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Is only me or digg's responsiveness is very low this days?
- Alegoo92, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13I'm pretty sure Apple- which is very close with the music industry- will screw it up. You'll go through some third part system where you have to pay and can only share like 10 songs a month, and they all have to come from Disney.. :-(
Microsoft is no better though. - 1jaxstate1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Actually, in this case, I think MS will get it right. Since they are already paying the devils...err I mean the Music labels a portion off each Zune sold, they might be in good with them. Hopefully one of the two will get it right.
- pyrates, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8And once again, when Apple puts in the wifi sharing capability into the iPod, apple fan boys will flock and shout how it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. Despite Microsoft having done it first. Of course they'll ignore that because if it's a new feature that someone else other then Apple put in, they will ignore it until Apple implements it. How typical. It really is a case of Not Invented Here syndrome.
Course no one admits that Arcos came out with the first portable video player and yet Apple gets all the attention when they come out with their iPod video. And the video quality is better with the Arcos too. - Eldoo77, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Put away your wand Dupe Fairy!
- insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Whats the point? Just open it up and let people share freely. Otherwise sit back and watch 3rd party firmware do it for you and in the process remove all microsoft or apple branding/control from the device.
- lordtyros, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Yeah, except for this little thing called the RIAA.
- michaelbolton, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4they could have come up with a better term for Ad Hoc Sharing, I mean come on... Squirting?
Yo, squirt some R-Kelly over here! W. T. F. - lordtyros, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The current iPod is 2 years old. Love it or hate it, it is outdated.
- stalefries, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Does anyone else think Apple's patent sounds a lot like what Bonjour already is?
- dheaddy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7"Microsoft has a few wireless tricks up its sleeve for the Zune"
Do any of these tricks involve making the wireless function even remotely useful? - lordtyros, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yes. It was the leading music player back when all the other ones were in color. It was the leading music player when all the other ones had video.
Technical superiority != Market Success - NerveBand, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4It's also a huge brick. And I thought the zune was big.
- nicpedersen, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6After my second Ipod was stolen i decided to get a Zune...for $50 cheaper than a 30gb ipod. I must say i am quite impressed with the overall quality and ease of use. I have never used the wifi tho.
- chriskeyes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The Zune is a PMP made by Microsoft. If you haven't seen it, here's there site: http://zune.net/
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The interface is pretty good, even the fit & finish of the device is good. As you say the DRm/Windows software is a problem, but personally also from trying them out at stores the devices were just too large for practical everyday use.
- cvp1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I've said it before and I'll say it again - the Zune is a fantastic piece of hardware. It fails in the crippled, DRM-locked, Windows Media advocated software area. It's a very well built piece of hardware with a lot of neat hardware features like Wifi. Unfortunately, when the legal team and the software team got hold of it, things fell apart.
- lacronicus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3you just bashed MS for apple ripping off them. bravo, youve just reached a level of fanboy that i never thought possible. thats even worse than saying a glitch is a feature
- hoodlum54, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2CAUTION: Ignorant fanboy alert...
- muikano, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1the idea of squirting things into my ear isn't obvious. It's disgusting.
- UlicBelouve, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Call me when your eyes start bleeding, trying to watch that small iPod screen.
- tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Anyone remember Archos? Did MS rip them off?
- MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4I think most people found the Zune's sharing function less than adequate. 3 plays or 3 days isn't much of an advancement. It is however more than the iPod thus far has been capable of.
I refused to buy a Zune, not because it was made by Microsoft (or someone else other than Apple), but because I didn't like some of the ways that it worked.
1. Didn't work out of the box with a Mac. Since that's my platform of choice, why would I want one?
2. Zune Marketplace's method of payment left me cold. Why should I have to buy "points" to purchase content that will almost never add up to the total number of points required to buy audio/video for the device? Something wrong with actual US currency? Leaving points behind leaves me with the impression that I'm essentially giving a free loan to Microsoft for however long those points are there. Sure it doesn't add up to much, but multiply that by the millions who own one.
3. The screen is too small to watch video (Yes, I know the 5g and 5.5g iPod screen is even smaller...didn't buy one of those either)
As far as the interface goes, I guess it's a matter of opinion. I've heard lots of people say they either love it or hate it. It didn't seem that bad to me and felt certainly as intuitive as the iPod's.
Considering that these devices are primarily meant for listening to music or watching videos, as far as I care they could sync wirelessly (WiFi or whatever) back to their respective music stores (iTunes or Marketplace) and allow me to purchase new content to sync back to my computer at a later time instead of it being that I have to first download it to my computer and THEN to the device.
I don't necessarily want an all-in-one device that does lots of thing either poorly. It either adds unneeded costs (iPhone) or complexity that makes sure that most people who buy one can't figure out how to use it (most smartphones).
I have a cell-phone to make calls. I have an iPod nano 1st gen to listen to music. Want my money? Make it useful AND easy to use without gouging me. - NiGHTSChao, on 10/11/2007, -12/+13Zune ftw
- skratchnerd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i think he means "nothing else today, no matter what it is, can be more ignorant than what you just said". Get it pinche?
- seinman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2That's probably because the iPod's sharing would actually be useful. More people use iPods than Zunes. That's not some "well I have a friend that saw THREE Zunes today!" story, that's a fact. 100 million iPods have been sold, and only 1 million Zunes. First to market doesn't mean anything; most to market is what counts.
- nicpedersen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2No its clear apple is doing the ripping off. I am actually a windows guy/anti mac. it was just poorly translated sarcasm. apologies
- hoodlum54, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Once agian...microsoft takes some non "magical, innovative idea"(s) from Apple's OSX, and ALL of vista is a copy, yet apple does the same thing...and fanboys praise them for it! All bow to the powerful fruit!
- skratchnerd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1they are in Halo 2. lol
- mattprice, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"... things I will hear today."
Dude, you mean you can predict the future and know what you're going to hear ahead of time?! - Mockylock, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I wonder if they're both WiFi capable, if you could send from an ipod to a zune?
- skratchnerd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1exactly. what's a zune? give me a good ol iPod anyday. they have the best interface and the masters of digital music. nuff said.
- SirZRX, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1good news for the RIAA
- abwaters, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0The idea of squirting music is one of those ideas that seem obvious enough once you think about it and to tell you the truth, it sounds really cool. But...without having looked at the patent yet it seems obvious that there has to be a DRM mechanism involved.
Microsoft, in case you missed it, DRM just isn't working out all that well...maybe someone will get the hint and open source DRM. - SirBotchness, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Well, as long as my current mp3 player works i don't see any reason to buy another one.
- skratchnerd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1you little squirter you. bwahaha. i would never squirt stuff to a buddy of mine. that is just wrong.
- dmbohn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0a patent is claiming ownership of an idea, it doesn't mean they are going to do it soon...
- ssavoy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Buried for "iPods may be playing catch-up to the Zune".
Since when does the most popular music player on earth try to play catch up with the least popular ugliest? - Timetheos, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4Damned patent process. Any bozo can patent the obvious. Then, it goes to court, and the person with the most money wins.
It's not supposed to work this way, but capitalism has become a cancer in our government. It's infected the host and killing it, making it so government serves large corporations and not the people. - abandonedhero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I think you mean Archos.
- garryw, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Original Story from July 11
http://www.zunescene.com/paid-zune-sharing/ - superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1And have a Zune... Thant's generally kind of a showstopper.
- TeamWookie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1The wireless function of the zune is very usefull. It's the best way to exchange porn and comedic pictures with coworkers at an office job. They just need to enable the transfer videos too.
- sjbdallas, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1FTA: "This would offer a huge incentive for Zune users to start walking around, squirting music to everybody in sight"
Another incentive might be if there were 100 million Zunes out there for folks to squirt on instead of a few hundred thousand. And before someone posts a link to an article about 1 million shipped zunes, remember, that's SHIPPED not SOLD. - Isolder, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Apple putting wifi on the iPod can hardly be considered a ripoff of Microsoft. Wifi on a music player wasn't some magical, innovative idea one day, it was one of those things that I'm sure many people thought would/should happen when they started thinking about their player and wireless. As far as Zune and iPod goes, the only thing to note is that Microsoft did it first. That in no way means they should have the only wifi capable player. It was the inevitable.
- Kyderdog, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3>wireless tricks up its sleeve for the Zune
Like the wireless really working??? - lacronicus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1no, you must ask permission from their tech toys to let OTHERS make use of files you own. there is a major difference.
- jpaddington, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0combining this tool http://seeqpod.com/iphone and the search/discover ability, I'd love to have the ability to xfer files between devices. It's inevitable, it's going to happen, searching on your mobile for *anything* then xfer ability = heaven aint so far away...
- ThatsUnpossible, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1I called it when AppleTV was announced -- AppleTV will be streaming content from nearby iPods in 3... 2... 1...
- echolalia, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3That is one of the most ignorant things I will hear today.
