- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+78You mean solution: piracy.
Pirates don't deal with DRM, or ads, or insane prices. The less convienient you make it to do things legally, the easier it is for people to "justify" piracy. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+48Tivo AdBlock 2.0 pls
- pvtjohndoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37Better solution: MythTV
- luvkit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34These people must be idiots. Commercials are supposed to make people want your product. If you force people to watch an ad when they DELIBERATELY intend to skip an ad, wouldn't that irritate the viewer and cause a backlash against the product the commercial is trying to sell?
Why would anyone ever buy a product where their first encounter was unpleasant and irritating? Someone needs to buy these suits some common-sense. - chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35solution: don't watch tv.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Oh the irony: showing me an ad as I'm skipping an ad.
Well I'll show them, I'll watch the original ad and there's nothing they can do about that! Huzzah! Victory! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22When you pay for tv, such as cable or sat, you shouldnt have to see a commercial, why pay for it then? its like getting screwed twice. If this happens i will abandon tv all together
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24You're an idiot. Most people should notice why.
- shawnanigans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Thats really the problem with piracy, its too convinent. Its so convinient now with BT. Instead of searching through newsgroups or irc or having to buy pirated copies, all you need now is TPB and you got anything you want. For free, no DRM, no commercials.
- Yage2006, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Torrent is a good way around that problem :)
- Coridan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16You would think so, but the advertisers know that commercials are subliminal, so as long as you are exposed they win.
- IVIrMP3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I always start watching hour long shows after 18 minutes so I never have to watch a commercial : (
Or do we all need to switch to MythTV? - Arkonnan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Will the brown shirts show up at my door and arrest me if I get up to take a piss during one of their revenue-generating commercials?
- CaffeineAddict, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Tivo is made by a business, one that can be sued ... or coerced ... or threatened for taking TV companies main source of profit away from them. Open Source however is just code ... you cant threaten, coerce, bribe, or destroy it ... because it is maintained by the masses rather than for the $$$
You like your TiVo ... but your pissed with the fact that people are still shoving commercials at you because TiVo can be intimidated into doing it ... then now would be a good time to look into the options:

- OswaldKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11This is exactly like when the telemarketers sued the government to stop the Do-Not-Call list. First there will be boycotts of television, then piracy, and hopefully, boycotts of the products too. People need to send a message to the sales industry that forcing this garbage down our throats is not profitable.
- Doggpound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8That is about where I am going to. Not broadcast tv anyway.
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10agreed software2... this can be a slippery slope.
- tkotam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7ever wondered why some websites get DDOS attacks? :-) creative ideas though..
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5At some point in time, I figure we'll turn out Japan. We'll just become used to the ads. In Japan, every building (in the cities, that is) has ads on it. Every wall has ads. There is no wasted ad space. In fact, on the subways, they paint ads on the walls, and the pillars that the train passes by act as gaps between frames, and it makes for the illusion of an animated ad painted onto the wall outside when you're underground in a subway.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Thats why I'll never pay for any service!
I don't mind so much watching free-to-air TV with commercials in it, but if I've paid damn good money (and often, a LOT of of it) for cable or sat, I DO NOT want to see a single commercial. I've paid my dues, now get the hell out of my life!
I now watch literally 1 hour of 'real' TV a week, and even thats DVR'ed so I can skip the ads with a single button push. The rest is torrent stuff from home and overseas.
***** the greedy networks, ***** the cowards who roll over to appease them, and ***** the damn advertisers and their raft of products and services that I don't (and never will) need or want!
You can't even go to the cinema these days and not be subjected to 25 minutes of ***** before the movie you PAID to watch comes on! I paid to see the movie, not to have adverts stuffed down my throat for 25 god damn minutes! Its no wonder people are abandoning the cinema! - anarchy99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"When you pay for tv, such as cable or sat, you shouldnt have to see a commercial, why pay for it then? its like getting screwed twice. that is true the channels the satellite companies pay for to be on the satellite had commercials because it was/is over the air(somewhere)and thats how they make money
now those networks get paid by the sat provider to broadcast the content the sat provider gets paid by you to view said content and commercials are still there to make money thus they double dip
they are corrupt criminals thats steal thousands of dollars
i guess thats why i pay for only the basic bell expressvu package for when my pirated expressvu/dish receiver goes down which isnt often - thunderer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If this happens, I'll only have one change:
Lost will be in crystal-clear high definition.
My satellite has crappy reception for ABC, and if I can't skip through ads, I'm torrenting. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3House is on Fox
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3zybch: "You can't even go to the cinema these days and not be subjected to 25 minutes of ***** before the movie you PAID to watch comes on!"
Yes you can, just turn up for the film 20 minutes late! - Flamekebab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have a TV in my room for game consoles and DVDs. Nothing more.
Adverts drive me nuts, so I just download content if I want it. It's too inconvenient to schedule my life around TV shows I want to see. - rtbenson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm at college and I didn't bring a TV. Instead I just download my favorite shows on bittorrent and never see a commercial. I don't think I've seen a TV commercial in the last two months. Also, I'm a lot more productive without a TV to distract me.
- mikeabundo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Black Arrow". What a great name for something evil.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BeyondTV, GB-PVR, Sage
3 Great Alternatives to MythTV. Windows Media Center edition also has DVR Capabilities. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where can you get an HD Version anything on Torrents? Please don't call those Xvid Copies of Shows HD.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1meh, as long as Aussie land continuous to be a slow adopter then i'm fine.
- UnoriginalMind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1MythTV doesn't work on windows. Crap. I wish they would put these things on the front page of the site...I'm far from observant.
- kilofox, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5When are you two going to realize that without commercials there wouldnt be TV? i.e. Do you think NBC/SciFi makes BSG out of the goodness of their hearts for you to enjoy without commercials? Just because you are paying for Sat or Cable doesnt exempt you from viewing commercials.
Think I am wrong? Start your own network that doesnt make money (no commercials right?), and try producing a television program. How long do you think you'd be in business? - Theguywhoknows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1that sucks, ill digg it but i dont think the adds should be in there
- saralk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You may say that TV companies are greedy and trying to get as much money as possible, but DVRs are taking away advertising revenue from companies. If they get less money, and at the end of the day, businesses exist to make money.
I think we will get to a point where we will get the option of paying for TV shows on demand (like iTunes, but through our TV, and in hi-def) or being forced to watch ads, through a DRM solution. - CaffeineAddict, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Funny thing is that the Manufacture of the product that you may or may not boycott due to this could very well be oblivious to how there wares are being advertised. They may have just asked for some type of advertisement during a specific time of the day and let the cable company do the rest.
And while I can understand that its annoying to be presented with a commercial when you are trying to skip a commercial ... but few things in life are free, and television is not one of them. You may think its free ... but its not really ... instead of taking payment in just money though ... TV companies make there money by taking your time. TiVos have found a way to get around this ... but in order to survive TV companies still must find a source of income, welcome to commercialized fast forwarding.
Yes, there are ways around commercials ... but if a large percentage of the viewing population finds out, and starts utilizing such workarounds ... it is only logical that the commercializing will adapt. - kilofox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"they are corrupt criminals thats steal thousands of dollars
i guess thats why i pay for only the basic bell expressvu package for when my pirated expressvu/dish receiver goes down"
Looks like you are a criminal too eh? - mattlodder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is why a UK-style license fee is a good idea...
- kilofox, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4When are you going to learn that if companies dont make money.,.. they dont exist. You can torrent all you want, but if you happen to be a "House" fan for example, and NBC goes out of business... there wont be any more episodes of House, even on BT.
- yardline, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I'm just a casual digg surfer. I just have to say that you hardcore digg people take this whole digg thing way to seriously. Find a REAL cause in life to fight for rather than worrying about which stories are coming to the top.
- kysle, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Would the DVR not work if you unplugged it from access to new commercials during playback? Maybe install an easy switch in the line...
- DuxDucis, on 10/12/2007, -56/+7Grrr, that is just totally gay...
Unfortunately, for most cable networks this is probably going to happen.
