- drjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This has been in the works for quite a while now so it's good to see it getting closer to real world.
And where will the wonderful new hi-tech miracle be put to use? Selling crap to ritch folks of course!
I hope the paper-type solutions they were working on in the 90s went somewhere in addition to the plastics, I'd LOVE a small hardcover book with the equivalent of an ipod full of books (and sound, animation) built into the spine. Our computer displays have come a long way but the best text display system in the world is still ground up trees.
As for the quality, who is going to open a Playboy to see a full video nudie and be like 'dude, this isn't even Hi-Def, bogus'
-drjones - Chango_Family, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can just picture our cat's expression the first time she steps into her litter box that's been lined with video newspaper.
The links in the comment section are much better than the article. - Fezzik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Question: "but will kids know how to read in the future."
Answer: "no pictures = no digg. reading sucks." - Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No sound, thats good. They add sound to this, which they no doubt will... and I cancel all my magazine subscriptions and newspaper subscriptions the day they do it. Nothing I hate more than a website with an advertisement with sound. A magazine/newspaper would be 100x worse.
- elisevil, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1If we could give up our pot prohibition we could start making paper out of good ol' hemp like they did for the Constitution and leave a few more trees alone. I wonder how we're gonna feel about throwing these magical magazines away when we're done with them??? Will they get a special recycling bin??? Do they come with their own battery???
- captainnico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This will be the best thing that could ever happen to the porn industry. I'm just looking forward to my origami laptop.
- Hassassin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Minority Report baby!!
- xerves, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They have been talking about this technology for years. Last time I heard they were having problems getting up to standards that are required for tvs/lcds. Mainly it would only last so many hours *oddly though it was many many more hours than you would get on a bulb from a projector or something of that fashion*.
- Amadeus2490, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
They say they're gonna use this in newspapers, and magazines, huh?
Why am I the only one that realizes how annoying ads are going to be NOW?! You turn the page to finish reading the big interview on page 82, and you see animated bright pink colors flashing, that "woo woo!" song, and the woman with artifically shiny blonde hair telling you to use some Garnier Nutrisse.
Doesn't sound like fun to me. Maybe they can do cool stuff with this in science/tech magazines, and video game magazines, but please dear god no ads. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol.. I'd rather have a board, that you can tac this stuff on-to as a display. actual Falt Displays...
What I wan't to know is, are they good quality? Or cheapy LEDS? - jord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1data storage wouldn't be the problem, what about battery life?
- tdkme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Would be nice to see pictures with the story
- Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm not gonna call dupe, but for those of you asking for pictures. This was submitted 6 days ago.
http://www.digg.com/technology/Wafer-Thin_Color_Displays_For_Packaging - Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wonder if they can put images on my toilet paper. Sure beats buying a flat screen for my bathroom.
- macrebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds like my dreams are finally coming true:
I wake in the morning, pour my cup of coffee, go to my favorite chair, pull my eReader from its charging base (two batton shaped objects that when pulled apart reveal a thin flexible screen or maybe a fan style object that opens to the size of a magazine), click on the power button and read the days news.
Of course my eReader is wirelessly connected to my home network, includes page forward and back buttons, text manipulation buttons for resizing text and sound controls for live audio feeds to accompany my reading.
In the open source os version there is an option to disable moving animation and pictures if I so choose.
Sounds good to me. - phlud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For ads.. kinda sucks, depending on the ad, and how often they appear. Unfortunately advertising agencies are the ones showing the most interest. I think at first it'll be damn cool, because many Geeks day dream of being in a world that looks and feels more furturistic, but when the market for this really takes off and everyone starts doing it all at once as competitors try and out do one another it will most surely be quite annoying. =
- ikonz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i read about this new monitors in the newspaper 2 months ago
- AhronZombi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1sounds like somthing from firefly
- Ximensions, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this is a device based on organic, conjugated polymers. We're doing research on it here at Imperial College. D D C Bradley has co-invented it I believe, he's currently at Imperial College London.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would love to read more about this technology, anyone else have any other useful links? This is a great digg!
- Koennie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I am a Geek, I like a new technology but will kids know how to read in the future.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Harry Potter is teh gay.
- Squidly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This will revolutionize the pr0n industry.
- agentsmithone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just like Hassassin it's going to be just like we saw in Minority Report!
- Billahoody, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this sounds like a great idea it could really change the way we see things
- snuffels, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Here's a link to Siemens website and the actual "press release" of their product. They go into further detail of how their product works. Enjoy (Copy and paste link) http://www.siemens.com/index.jsp?sdc_p=d1184570pFEcfi1182563l1mn1182567os2u20z3&sdc_contentid=1319922

There we go. - DrBudro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0only £30 per square metre; that's about $5 USD per square foot...That would make some pretty nice wallpaper.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So who is going to buy this? The same dippy idiot who clicks on spam adverts, that's who.
Why pay extra money for an animated advertisment on how to use preparation H in a magazine? I can watch them for free on TV.
Sheesh, they seem to be pandering to the ritalin addicts these days.
"Mmmmmmmmm...., shiny, must have it." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0At that price you could use it for wallpaper.
- ciaocibai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That's seriously cool. I mean, seriously.
- PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Screw screens. Give me a retinal scanning laser HMD and I'm a happy camper! w00t!
- ciaocibai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0How rad would that be looking at magazines and stuff with this in? Or video game boxes packaged in it. Radical!
Where does it store the video though? - Sithlrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Porn on toilet paper would be both awesome and just plain wrong at the same time.
- kiwi7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The first thing I thought as I read this article was "wow, neat, just like Hary Potter". But then I started to think of things like 'minority report', and how bombarded people were with media/ads in that movie. The people in that seemed to have adapted to this kind of bombardment to the point of being able to ignore it, but where is the line drawn for what becomes too distracting or too much? The media already dictates more than we may realize in our daily lives. It will take some time to get used to actually being able to read the articles without being completely distracted by the movement of several pictures within the page as well.
So I guess I'm viewing this tech as both a good/cool and potentially bad thing. - krinkle_man, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0you like thats gonna happen! this isnt a harry potter movie!
- Mittop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is definitely cool technology! Companies like ePaper, etc. have been talking about this for years. The one area I think pundits constantly fail to discuss is the engineering / construction industry. Put together the power of CAD, 3D Parametric Models, etc. and you can put together a 48" blue print that can be rolled up, tossed onto a table and reviewed by a design team at a job site. Think about maps that could be bought at the store and be more readily manipulated.
And oh yes... the incredibly annoying advertising. - clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"German electronics GIANT SIEMENS." Hahahaha Get it?
Anyway, this is cool. Back to the Future, baby! - tillythehun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0oh man that's awesome
- Grandfinale1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0My newspaper can now be just like Harrp Potters paper. Cool great story. digg++
- Agent_M, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Too weird. It kind of freaks me out for some reason. Maybe because this feels too sci-fi, like something still impossible with today's technology. It's unreal.
Yeah, I thought Harry Potter too. :P - TK99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0[I am a Geek, I like a new technology but will kids know how to read in the future.

- Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow, everything in Minority Report is really going to happen isn't it. :o
- zabigypopel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This would be a cool implementation for t-shirts i think.
- cuoops, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0kind of a dupe from my post 6 days ago

Uh, do you know anything about OLEDs?? If you did, you wouldn't be a skeptic. I suggest reading the wikipedia article xerves posted. - thecoolestcow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Also, check out the Optimus keyboard. It will use the same OLED technology.
