- sochee, on 09/27/2008, -2/+169***** the RIAA. For real this time.
- Sean23, on 09/27/2008, -0/+108Listening to Pandora right now. It really is great for discovering new artists. I've bookmarked several songs that are close to my favorites from people I never would have heard of.
- GregFD3S, on 09/27/2008, -0/+87Pass this on... Pandora is legit.
- Pash1994, on 09/27/2008, -0/+58I'm listening to Pandora now, just as this submission popped up.
I'm new to Pandora, and find it really fills a musical void for me. It's better than any radio station. I hope to heaven it doesn't disappear. - zielgruppe, on 09/27/2008, -0/+33Somafm.com did the same. Support them, I would hate to loose it. Btw, this has nothing to do with RIAA, they support H.R. 7084 as well. Here's the mail from SomaFM

The issue of royalties for internet radio has not been solved.
Webcasters and SoundExchange have continued to negotiate, and are
getting close to a settlement that's acceptable to both sides. However,
the US Congress still needs to approve any settlement into law. Because
of that, H.R. 7084, the Webcaster Settlement Act of 2008, has been
introduced into Congress. It will allow webcasters to continue
negotiating with SoundExchange and enact a settlement after Congress
goes on vacation (that vacation could be as soon as Monday).
We thought this bill would sail through congress; webcasters want it,
SoundExchange thinks it's a good idea; even the RIAA has no opposition
to it. However, at the last moment, the NAB - the National Association
of Broadcasters - has decided to oppose it! We don't know why, because
it could be a benefit to them for their webcasts. We think it's because
they're now threatened by internet broadcasters and would be happy to
see us forced off the air.
Please call your Congressperson right now and ask them to support H.R.
7084, the Webcaster Settlement Act of 2008 - and to not capitulate to
pressure from the NAB. Congress is currently working extended hours, so
even calls this evening and the rest of the weekend should get answered.
A call is much more important than sending a letter, and it will only
take 1 minute.

Regards. - inactive, on 09/27/2008, -0/+17Pandora is great. I hear tracks that I would have otherwise have never heard before through their highly intuitive play list. I then go and BUY these tracks/albums. Musicians make money off Pandora - period. Pandora is good for the industry. Perhaps Radio stations would suffer less if they stopped playing the same repetitive crap.
- ringof17, on 09/27/2008, -0/+16It's not just about Pandora, but internet radio as well; if this bill doesn't pass there we will end up listening to soft jazz on the radio. Do you want that?
- HarryRag, on 09/27/2008, -4/+20It's possible to *gasp* do several things simultaneously.
- fumar, on 09/27/2008, -2/+17I want to give you a +1, but for once this isn't the RIAA's fault, at least not the bill dying. Its necessity is entirely the RIAA's fault though.
***** it, ***** THE RIAA!!! - reknaps, on 09/27/2008, -0/+14Terrestrial radios DO pay annual ASCAP licensing fees for the music they play
http://www.ascap.com/licensing/termsdefined.html - fumar, on 09/27/2008, -0/+13I bought much more music legally thanks to Pandora since I would find artists that I liked that you couldn't download illegally.
- benjo8, on 09/27/2008, -0/+12Just sent my congressman a letter. Super easy. Takes perhaps 5 minutes, and its worth it.
- watchdoggie, on 09/27/2008, -0/+9Ahhhh Nancy Pelosi's voicemail is FULL!!
Shouldn't Congress people have XL voicemail boxes?? Hopefully it's full of pro Pandora mail. - Pash1994, on 09/27/2008, -0/+9Sample Letter: (this is the one I sent)

Contacted my congress(woman) with pleasure. Even called up my mother (a few states away) and had her do the same. - MAARRS, on 09/27/2008, -1/+8Yes Congress is busy, but don't think they won't be voting anyway.
THERE WILL BE A VOTE! MAKE THEM VOTE FOR FREE INTERNET COMMUNICATION! iF YOU DON'T SPEAK UP, THEY WILL JUST VOTE FOR THE NAB.
sO don't just digg, WRITE. it' take a freakin minute

it's more than the great great service Pandora, but a step towards the full potential of the web as a mass communication tool. Don't worry about someone's royalties, worry about some CEO bastard controlling your rights to the information super highway. - ethana2, on 09/28/2008, -0/+7I usually just call them the Music and Film Industry Associations.
It makes more sense to people who don't know what's going on.
**** the MaFIA! - inactive, on 09/27/2008, -0/+7I think you are confusing, we are talking about Congress here.
- willwillywilson, on 09/28/2008, -2/+8" Congress is currently working extended hours, so even calls this evening and over the weekend should get answered."
Yeahhhhhhh. OK. Because Congress isn't working on anything else important right now. Now if you'll excuse me my eyes just rolled out of their sockets. - Pash1994, on 09/28/2008, -0/+6Perhaps you should read further down the thread, where I posted a sample letter that I already sent. Have you also written to your Congressman?
If not, then I guess I should blame you if Pandora dies. Correct? - sephiroth965, on 09/28/2008, -1/+7Exactly. They're idiots for trying to shut it down. last year I prolly bought albums from like 10 different artists that I wouldn't have found without Pandora.
- MicrosoftBob, on 09/28/2008, -1/+6*shakes head*
I'm with sephiroth. I've PURCHASED more music because of Pandora, not in spite of it.
I would have never known about Billy McLaughlin if it wasn't for Pandora. - lofi4life, on 09/28/2008, -0/+5I used to listen to Pandora all the time until it got banned in the UK. Hopefully it will come back one day.
- paynomind, on 09/28/2008, -0/+5Here is my letter to my SENATE rep, (as it already passed the House)
As your constituent in the north side of Woodstock, and a fellow Georgia Tech grad, a bill has come to my attention that I would like to share my thoughts upon.
I would like to ask you to support H.R. 7084, the Webcaster Settlement Act of 2008 - and to not capitulate to pressure from the NAB.
I am an avid listener to online STREAMING radio stations. Not downloadng music, but listening to programmed radio stations, while at my desk at work or at home.
I use an amazing service called Pandora, that takes into account a user's music ratings, and plays songs similar that the user may or may not have heard before. I'd found SO much new music that I love, this service has enriched my life. It has also caused me to purchase a lot of new and interesting music I otherwise wouldnt have heard of.
This benefits everyone, including the record companies and myself. I see no reason to cave to the pressure currently exhibited by NAB, as I still listen to traditional broadcast radio when I am in my car.
The bill, as i understand it, simply allows Pandora and all respective parties more time to make the necessary changes to get their broadcasts adhere to the letter of the law.
As you well know the laws concerning and relating to hi-tech industries and markets are ever growing and changing. This bill is important because these companies WANT to adhere to these new and changing laws, and the bill allows them the adequate about of time to do so. The opposition to this bill simply want to shut down this market. They just want it killed. Which to me, is not capitalism.
All in all, i want to see Pandora alive. Please consider supporting the cause to keep this awesome service going.
Thank you, Yours truely, - catfish182, on 09/28/2008, -0/+5i dugg you for the Mafia thing bro but would you please just type *****. I swear to you that the FCC will not come after you.
- WldChld76, on 09/27/2008, -0/+5I just e-mailed my congressman from the state I currently live in (because of the military) and my congressman from the state I actually am a resident of. I don't normally sign into digg, but this is a worthy cause that I just had to be a part of.
- inactive, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4Dead on! I've found a number of artists I would have never known about if not for Pandora. This is an EXCELLENT model to get me to buy music. I've recently gotten into the Gipsy Kings (ya, I know...behind the curve), Climax Blues Band (again, I know), and I've found some great live tracks by various bands I didn't even know existed!
Since I've started listening to Pandora, I've actually bought about 3 times as much music as I was before....
Clear Channel, RIAA, et al, you are stupid if you shut down Pandora. - Pixelpaws, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4Remember, Digging this isn't going to make it happen. Send an e-mail to your congressperson. Better yet, call them and write them as well. Their session is going to end very shortly and, without immediate action, this bill will die.
- mpobri, on 09/27/2008, -13/+17What BS. Terrestrial broadcasters pay NOTHING for their music content, but internet and satellite broadcasters do. I understand that artists want exposure and money, but deciding that "old school" radio should get a free ride and all new media should pay makes NO sense.
- markagrzyb, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4I called my congressmen, one said his cable service was cut off for no reason, he's using rabbit ears now. Said there would be hefty charges if they turned it back on, even though it was their fault for cutting it off!!! He's tired of putting up with this constant bullying, and he'll do everything in his power to help this pass.
PEOPLE!!!: Most of congress doesn't even know about this bill! they're very wrapped up in the economy and a budgeting plan (which is why they're on extended hours). Call the representatives in your area, even if their NOT in your area, it will still get the point across.
Thank you,
God Save Pandora - BootsyGraham, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4Thanks, just sent one in.
- 9bpm9, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4I've added hundreds of songs to my library because of Pandora and Last.fm.
And while I usually pirate, there are just some guys out there that I found out about that aren't on bittorrent sites, so I just hit up Amazon and download it. - bossm4n, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4Another sample I just sent my Congresswoman. Somewhat of a copy and paste from Pandora's page
Dear Representative,
I encourage you to support H.R. 7084, the Webcaster Settlement Act of 2008. Do not capitulate to pressure from the NAB. This is a blatant attempt by large radio companies to suffocate the webcasting industry that is just beginning to offer an alternative to their monopoly of the airwaves.
Sincerely,
xxxx - kinseyincanada, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4goddamn it i want Pandora in Canada
- Garjon, on 09/28/2008, -1/+5Ahhahahahah! Pelosi's your rep?!?
You have no hope. - Hiltonizer, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4https://forms.house.gov/wyr/welcome.shtml
- lofispy, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3How so? I believe you might have a good point there, but please flesh it out a little more for me....
- monofoto59, on 09/27/2008, -2/+5As a lifelong fan of independent music, PANDORA is absolutely wonderful and effing essential to me and to the music community. I HAVE EVEN BOUGHT CDS by artists Pandora suggested. IT WORKS. Hey music industry and your lobbyists: I think your boy John McCain was talking to you when he repeated over and over last night ad nauseum "You just don't get it."
- solidwhetstone, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3I called my congressman about 10 minutes after I got the facebook update. Crazy times.
- Daniel591992, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3Mind posting a sample letter?
- sealink, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3I called mine and left a message. Pandora is awesome.
- lofispy, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3To all those people hoping their reps. mailboxes are full of pro-H.R. 7084 messages....I wouldn't count on it, because in case your head has been in the sand for the last several months, WE ARE GOING THROUGH AN ECONOMIC COLLAPSE. And in the long run, I hate to say this, but internet radio simply isn't a priority compared to the value of the dollar and millions of people losing their homes. Yeah, Pandora is great and all, but would you rather your reps. be working a real solution to the economy or dicking around with internet radio. And if you answered internet radio, I seriously doubt you understand the seriousness of the country's position right now....so yes, I really hope the bill passes, but in the long run, priorities are priorities...and to put it quite frankly, this simply isn't one...at least for the moment...
- dext3r, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3SomaFM rules. Space station, groove salad, beat blender FTW
- MOJIRA, on 09/28/2008, -1/+3Done and done.

My congressman is a Republican douchebag by the name of Tom Feeney. I don't know if my email will make a difference, but it's important that we try. - pygmy, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2It really sucks to lose Pandora, we outside the US lost access to it months ago.
Last FM is still available (I'm in Australia) but IMHO Pandora is more usable. - edzilla, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2I'd love to go and help Pandora, I really like what they do, but.... Oh wait, that's right, they banned us europeans from using their service... Sorry, maybe next time...
