- Techpaulogy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Even in Pandora’s current state, I still like Last.fm’s social capabilities better. And there’s always Pandora.fm if you want the mashup… my real question: when will something like Pandora’s recommendation service get fully integrated with iTunes? And when will iTunes get a subscription steaming music service like Yahoo or Rhapsody?
- PrincessZelda, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Not trying to sound like a fangirl, but how can you really know which is better by testing the social aspects of Pandora for all of 10 hours?
- bairy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Yeah cos all the "OMG if you steal from Pandora they will get shut down" propoganda has proved 100% correct so far hasn't it.
I'm sorry but firstly Pandora can't see if you're ripping tracks, and secondly the RIAA (et al) aren't bothered by the facts, so even if no one downloaded from Pandora the RIAA might suddenly decide to lawsuit them one day. - alternative724, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I use both.
Last.Fm keeps track of what i have played -> Last.Fm profile is sum of my musical taste over time
Pandora keeps track of what i WANT played -> Pandora shows me new music to incorperate to my taste -> Pandora recommendations end up in last.fm - zeeneo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6For me I'm only interested in the great music and Pandora is wicked for that!
Do I really want to be registered to 100 social networking sites and 'meet new people' - nope. Yawn!
Keep up the good work Pandora people - very reliable free service! - markman07, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7www.finetune.com is another good streaming free music site.
- alternative724, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5you made a good point.
they should have boughten them up...
idiot - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They pay licensing fees to all the publishers and follow the DMCA.
- ho0ber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ever notice that you can't skip more than a certain number of songs per hour? It is all pretty strictly licensed.
- EllisAshbrook, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yeah and theyve had social features since the start.
Oh, and they launched a ton of new updates today.
I know, since I work there. ;-) - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Pandora stations play music based upon the properties of a particular song's or band's sound. The good side is that it is more likely to play a song you like and avoid anything you don't like. It also leads to more surprises as it doesn't favor popular bands over more obscure bands. The bad side is that it leads to very similar sounding, repetitive stations.
Last.FM is based upon user's listening habits. The good side is more variety in a station's sounds. The bad side is that it is sometimes too obvious, favoring more popular bands (though you can set the obscurity level). - kevogod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Pandora recommendations are generated by a computer algorithm, and Last.fm recommendations are produced from users. Last.fm has been more social based as opposed to Pandora being just a radio.
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"However, you can expand your pandora station by adding more than one artist to it."
Yeah, I was just giving the basics. I prefer Pandora, but it takes a little more work of approving and disapproving songs. I've been using it awhile, so my first few stations have a ton of rated songs, but I still find myself having to tweek them a bit. Quickmix is the best feature they've added to date. - mxcl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can someone tell me what the differences are to Last FM, and what elements of each are superior to the other? Thanks if you can!
- ciaziraphale, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I love Pandora. I've heard great music on it from old favorites to new music.
- markdr123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Welcome to the social.
- Smuikas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@DisposableRob:
True, true. However, you can expand your pandora station by adding more than one artist to it. If it plays someone new you've never heard of, and you like it - add it to the station, and it will broaden the range that it pulls from. At the beginning, this might decrease the overall quality of the station - but as you vote up and down, it will narrow it down again. I find this constant ebb and flow of adding, then voting, to be pretty fun - it'd be interesting to see all the heuristics behind it.
As a musically inclined person, I want to see more of the vectors that they measure songs on! It would be interesting to see which vectors in and of themselves are the most popular, and then combinations of vectors.... - jambarama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Slightly off-topic for Pandora, but relevant for the comment on Last.FM
This is one of Amaroks biggest draws for me, it syncs with Last.FM if you want it to. I find the usage stats great, and Last.FM recommendations have helped me find more artists than anything but Amazon recommendations.
I have seen that Pandora recommendations are better, given the same amount of data as Last.FM, but Last.FM's data is much richer. If Pandora could grab usage info from a usable media player (iTunes would be fine, though I'd love a Foobar or Amarok plugin), I'd jump in a minute. - TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MSN is powered by Pandora's recommendation service
- mtwmike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Someone needs to snatch up Pandoa and make it apart of a bigger service. I'm surprise yahoo hasn't tried to buy them already
- galador, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you like both last.fm and Pandora, you could get something like OpenPandora (http://openpandora.googlepages.com/ ), that puts the Pandora player in a separate window (it appears to be a wrapper for IE), and has integration with last.fm, MSN Messenger, Skype, and Xfire.
For some reason, the link isn't working right above... - TimofSuburbia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All right I promised myself I wasn't gonna do this cause I do this to every Pandora post but...

http://ideabox.crispyideas.com - phaed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1eghhh that brushed metal look is making me sick. im sorry but i just cannot digg this.
- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 kevogod, that is somewhat incorrect. The recommendations on Pandora are based in a system of matching the properties of a particular song with properties of similarly rated songs in their database.
But all the ratings are done by humans. In fact they made it a practice of hiring professional musicians to do the scoring for each song so they could insure they had the human side, but with enough skill and talent to make for consistent results in the rating system.
They also take into account the "thumbs up, thumbs down" scores that members give to individual songs, and those votes affect the frequency that a particular song is likely to be replayed on a users station. - YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You haven't heard of Project Boxcutter?
- kwoktalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I turned on commercial radio last night and was reminded how horrible it is these days. While I'm not the biggest Pandora fan, good for them and hopefully they can keep giving us alternatives to the radio.
- reticentnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You're keen on all the ads/bureaucracy that a merger like that would create?
- dep01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1last.fm has nothing on Pandora. Pandora is awesome.
- mojo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Maybe it's because your site and brand identity suck. You've got numerous Clinko headers all of which look like *****. Using the Yahoo and Flickr fonts for some of them doesn't help things.
- antispammer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.projectplaylist.com is pretty good when the songs actually work... also lets you download the mp3
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a great Pandora fan, but while I've on occasion wondered why they didn't have the obvious social stuff, I've never really missed it: I go to Pandora to hear music, not to socialize.
- mrspin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2More on Pandora vs Last.fm
http://blogs.zdnet.com/social/?p=49 - Tlogmer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1LastFM is cool, but whenever I hook it up to iTunes I find myself playing the stuff I think is cool, not the stuff I really feel like hearing.
- PrincessZelda, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I was giddy to read this. I've been split between Pandora and last.fm for a while now, and social features were THE debate point the entire time. Makes the decision easy for me.
- Smuikas, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2digg down, mispost
- Keyframe3D, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1how can this be legal?
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0man i love pando. i kicks yousendit in the ass. its great for musicians emailing demos back and forth of a track they are collaborating on.
edit: doh! i misread that title - drewolanoff, on 06/10/2008, -15/+7Love Pandora, hate that people steal from it. Don't.
- SiLeNtHuNtER, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Pandora is my favorite, http://www.benh.org/techblog/2006/12/pandoracom-my-favorite-internet-music.html
- clinko, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Once again, i'm going to link to http://clinko.com/ A social music site I wrote 6 years ago.
Where's my millions? - RuffRidr, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1I'm surprised Apple or Microsoft haven't boughten up last.fm or Pandora yet. They would make for some very nice upgrades to the respective music stores.
