- cankles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well if backward compatability is the reason you are buying a system then wait for revolution.
- djrbx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Finally PS Freaks can't brag anymore that the PS3 is fully backwards compatible and the Xbox360 is not. Because as it turns out the PS3 is the same.
- KatamariofD00M, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you can only afford to buy a few games a year, -nailerr-, then you most likely already have the hardware, so why would you care about backwards compatibily with software, for hardware already own, unless you intend to make a few quick dollars off selling our old ps2.. which in that case, you should spend less time worrying over whether the games you have now will work on the new Ps3, and more time thinking *is it really worth making a quick 20 bucks to sacrifice the absolute ability to play my games that I'm so worried about?*
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1100% is hard to do. Even the PS2 is not 100% compatible with the PlayStation and I doubt the Revelation will be 100% compatible with the Game Cube. It looks like the way the PS3 will handle backwards compatibility is mostly in hardware but with some software emulation to work around miss behaving games. in other words broken games can be patched in software.
This is how Ken Kutaragi said it.
"Third-party developers sometimes do things that are unimaginable. For example, there are cases where their games run, but not according to the console's specifications. There are times when games pass through our tests, but are written in ways that make us say, 'What in the world is this code?!' We need to support backward compatibility towards those kinds of games as well, so trying to create compatibility by software alone is difficult. There are things that will be required by hardware. However, with the powers of [a machine like] the PS3, some parts can be handled by hardware, and some parts by software." - cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looking ahead to the PlayStation 3, which SCEI plans to launch in the first half of next year, Sakamoto said that SCEI remains committed to backwards compatibility with existing titles on the new machine.
"It's hard to say the PlayStation 3 will be 100 percent backwards compatible but as we said earlier this year we aim to make it so as much as possible," Sakamoto said. - kryogenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"100% is hard to do. Actually, backward compatability with the Gamecube may be easier than you think. Gamecube hardware prices are dropping, so it isn't entirely impossible for the Revolution to have a "Cube-on-a-chip." - OswaldKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0News Flash: The PS2 was not 100% backwards compatible either. More like 99.99% backwards comaptible.
- Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Finally PS Freaks can't brag anymore that the PS3 is fully backwards compatible and the Xbox360 is not. Because as it turns out the PS3 is the same."
They said they are making it as backwards compatible as possible, same was true for PS2 which is backwards compatible with like 99% of PS1 games. Regardless, 99% is good enough for me, way better than 0% tyvm. - cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This glitch occurs only on the new silver PS2. The only quote about the PS3 is this one:
- Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"the people who need backwards compatibility are the ones that own PS2 and PS1 games. so they own the system. i wouldn't think backward compatibilty to be a HUGE THING but i guess it is for some people, i personally dont mind 3 or 4 consoles set up at once."
it's convenient as hell to be able to play 2 console's games on 1 console. Haven't seen my old Psx in ages. Besides my little Composite TV/Audio plug switchbox only holds 4 consoles, and its full atm. (PS2 XB DC GCN) - Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is stretching it to take a jab at Sony. The article talks about the PS2 version 2, then speculates that the PS3 might also be slightly less than 100% compliant. Wahoo. Call Woodward & Bernstein. It's a a breaking story!
- computrholic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Duh! It's no secret that the both the PS2 and PS3 aren't fully backwards compatible.
The purpose of buying these next-gen systems isn't to play older games though. If all you wanna do is play old games then buy the older system. - tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does it even really matter, you buy the console to play the games that are made for it. And anyways most people who buy a PS3 probably already own a PS2 and have a PS1 somewhere in the closet.
- Drood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PC is completely backward compatible? Okay then, go grab a bunch of old DOS software then. Actually, better still, go get Microprose's Grand Prix 3, from the late 90's, and get it working on XP, since that's what 80% of us have. Then tell about how the PC is completely backwards compatible.
As for the PS3... Backward compatibility is cool, but I've used my PS2's compatibility with my PS1 collection on precisely two games. Final Fantasy VIII and Gran Turismo 2. - sneakerelph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the people who need backwards compatibility are the ones that own PS2 and PS1 games. so they own the system. i wouldn't think backward compatibilty to be a HUGE THING but i guess it is for some people, i personally dont mind 3 or 4 consoles set up at once.
*cough* PC is completely backwards compatible *cough cough* - dombi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the Playstation, but I think Sony seems very desperate lately. They released the PS2, then they created the slim version, and now they are making a silver special edition one?
They could have put all this effort into the PS3 instead and have a console ready to launch this year. - n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hopefully it will be just the crappy games that are not compatible...
- SatansMagicHat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a misleading title.
- BT-Wang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0backwards compatibility has to be broken eventually or it will either cripple (or make prohibitively expensive) the ps4 or ps5 I guarantee it.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It better be close to 100% or I won't get one. One of the main reasons I am getting a PS3 is to play PS2 games, there are a lot of them I've wanted to play but couldn't because both of mine are broken and I'm not buying another one. So I have 2 years of PS2 games to catch up on now, 3 when the PS3 is released.
- kirk06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How is this title misleading and inaccurate? It states that the PS3 may not be backwards compatible, which is an issue talked about in the article. The console may not be.
Just mature a little bit and RTFA before you start bashing it simply because it bashes your blessed little game system.
If you kids put this much heart and hate into game consoles, it's no wonder why gamers have the reputation of pimple-faced, single nerds. Since you console fanboys love to argue so much about this petty things, you should become lawyers...make something of your lives. That is, of course, when you are of age to get a job. :) - themajor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While its true that the article was about the new version of the PS2, the article did mention the issue with the PS3. The title raised the question about the PS3's backwards compatability, which was the part that interrested me and the part that i figured others would be interrested in. Bottom line, if you don't like it don't digg it, which I imagine that satansmagichat and adkinsjm didn't do.
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There are reasons why I would want to keep my ps2 around anyway (shifty eyes).
- your_mom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its gonna be pretty expensive having ot put 2 lasers in the system just for backwards compatibility. like someone else said, chances are youre gonna have a ps2 to do that so if you really want to play it jus thook it up........
- kirk06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I find it funny how the PlayStation fanboys make up any excuse possible as to why 100% Backwards Compatability is okay, yet they jumped on every chance to bash the XBox 360's lack of 100% backwards compatability.
Fanboyism, it's a great thing on the Internet. Gives me quite a laugh. - saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh no I wont be able to play all the previous games I have bought for the ps2!!!!!! actually wait, yeah i can, on THE FREAKIN PS2 THAT I BOUGHT THEM FOR!!
- chapstick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ wwwhank: why? So I can have another system without 100% backward capabilities.
- Crazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CRAP
I was planning to get this system to play all the games I missed out on becuse I didn't have a PS2 like Rez - kydd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i hate when companies boast then they end up with excuses, this is why i like nintendo, Rev will be 100% backwards compatible, with no uncertanties, or strange quotes making people wonder about it, i gaurantee. LET THE REVOLUTION BEGIN
- whitesanjuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no *****, misleading title
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Backwards compatibility doesn't matter. They'd be better off not worrying about it. I never put a PS1 disc in my PS2, and I don't know anyone who did. If I get a PS3, it'll be to play PS3 games.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who gives a *****? Gaming hasn't been very good since the SNES.
- Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"They released the PS2, then they created the slim version, and now they are making a silver special edition one?
They could have put all this effort into the PS3 instead and have a console ready to launch this year."
Because putting stuff in a smaller box and painting stuff requires as much manpower and engineering hours as getting the PS3 to launch like 8 months early. Righto. - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know one thing that will not be compatible with the PS3; My money to Sony's hand.
- Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think some people are missing the point that a lot of people who don't own a PS2 but end up getting a PS3 will probably be interested in buying and playing at least some of the old PS2 games. (gta anyone?)
- menta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Spell check....please spell check the headlines!
- nannerla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony shouldn't be working on making the hardware backwards backwards compatible but have emulation the machine is fast enough for it and it would take a lot less money and time. but backwards compatibility is stupid anyway its a waste of time.
- SatansMagicHat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I never owned a playstation 2, nor did i own an xbox simply because i roomed with guys that did. Because of that fact, i only played multiplayer games to any real degree except for hits like GTA.
"If you kids put this much heart and hate into game consoles, it's no wonder why gamers have the reputation of pimple-faced, single nerds. Since you console fanboys love to argue so much about this petty things, you should become lawyers"
kirk06, i never said i was a fanboy of anything, and getting irrate and childish for no reason is less mature than anyone else on digg. - nugget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ya thats a misleading title, first off it brings up the silver edition ps2 and just assumes the worst for everything else. Also I never owned a ps2, my brother just recently got one and my room mate has one. However I have not felt like I was left out for not playing any of the games. I have played FFX and I liked it and I may ende up playing FFX-2. I played MGS2 and didnt like it that much. I never liked the GTA games, I may have played the two for ps2 maybe an hour all together. I personaly like the GC and I have one and I love playing the games on that. I've played very little halo/halo2 and I am not disapointed. Sure I get stuff like omg you have not played halo2 how do you live? by xbox freaks and stuff like what you dont like gta you freak! from ps2 fanboys, but I never really felt like I missed out on anything. I like the games for GC and its not like everyone played windwaker, melee, double dash, tales of symphonia (SP?), or like everyone will play the new zelda comming out and I feel like thats what they are missing. Plus all the other games I have played that are GC only. And who would not like to beat ppl down as Link in Soul Caliber 2?
- Ndiggnation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm glad some of you realize that article is about the slimline silver PS2. About the PS3, as long as it's 80-90%= compatible with PS1/PS2 games, who gives a damn?
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First of all some companies aren't developing for the PS3 because of how difficult it is to program for and secondly it's not going to work with many of the PS2 games. That's gonna suck.
I'm all about competition between companies to keep things fresh. - Kirin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"i hate when companies boast then they end up with excuses, this is why i like nintendo, Rev will be 100% backwards compatible, with no uncertanties, or strange quotes making people wonder about it, i gaurantee. LET THE REVOLUTION BEGIN"
Possibly the funniest comment I've seen posted in ages. The misplaced evangelistic attitude people have towards Nintendo is amazing. They're possibly the dirtiest player in the game companywise. Don't mistake their game designers for the business criminals running the company :P Not to mention you can bet your ass it won't be 100% compatible :P - ashtonium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old New, this is in issue pertaining to the new silver PS2, and was even covered on the latest DiggNation... NO DIGG, Reported as OLD NEWS
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Will Halo play on my PS3? LMAO!
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha. microsoft switched one of their chipsets for their xbox (anybody who has dealt with xbox linux knows this), and it didn't cause any problems. the xbox is better than the playstation because of the people who make it.
the ps3 is going to be so much better than the xbox 360 in terms of hardware (on paper--let's hope i can still play metal gear solid on it). however, the xbox 360 blows the ps3 outta the water when it comes to software and the overall user experience. - Alpha_and_Omega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This story is being blown out of proportion. If you think realistically, how can you guarantee that every game ever made for the Playstation series can be compatible, especially since there are over 17k games between PS1 and PS2. A side note is that M$ won't even guarantee any backwards compatibility for games other than A list games. *Math Time* So, if you take the about 60ish games rumored to be "incompatible* and figure out a percent out of 17k that's only 0.35 percent! Come on people! Additionally out of the 7000 PS2 games out only 9 are on the list for incompatibilities, and of those on that list most of the "incompatibilities" are glitches that may well be avoided. *Math Time Again* so the nine games out of the 7000ish available for PS2 is only 0.13 percent of the games available. SONY will ensure that all the A list games (Yes Ratchet and Clank not Crank included) work and it's typically only the really crappy games, Ford Racing anyone, that make incompatibility lists because the developers don’t take the time to program properly. Another thing to take into account is that we should be happy for any backwards compatibility due to the PS3 running PS2 and PS1 games in emulation mode rather than through a hard coded processor. It really takes some beefy hardware to do that. My best advice is... Don't believe hype, *cough* Alex Albrecht *cough*, believe things that really affect you when you have the hardware in your hands. Hype machines, rumor mills, and brainwashed followers tend to be wrong in the end. Buy the console you like because you like it not because somebody else tells you it's better!
- Ndiggnation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You CAN keep your PS2's..
- Alpha_and_Omega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Then you should have no worries because they should be top tier games if you only buy a few :)
- nailerr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kevin? Shut the hell up! We CARE!
Some of us can only afford a few games a year at best and tend to buy only what we really like, so being able to play those matters. Damnit. - Braulio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let me just say....I saw this coming. But oh well, what can ya do?
