- pacetua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They may have no lives, but they have some awsome stuff to show for it.
(that didn't make sense) - teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lots of laptop owners with lots of time and cats, eh? makes sense.
- Byrns5512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It seems like the video version of this trick used blue/green screening. Would that have been more practical than lining everything up just right in the stills?
- gatorsrule21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this has made it to the front page several times already, but i will digg it again just becasue it is so cool
- AndrewMayne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"So they just took a photo and set it as the background then lined it up properly?"
What's it like to have no soul?
"It seems like the video version of this trick used blue/green screening. Would that have been more practical than lining everything up just right in the stills?"
"Practical"? Then it wouldn't be art. - diggmeplease, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the good attitude gatorsrule21 . I know its made the home page, but there are new ones every day. Most people probably havent seen these yet.
- calmconviction, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think it's interesting how most of these are some flavor of a mac
- ChrisTucker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats awesome.. i cant wait for REAL transparent screens, its possible with LCDs by removing the back and stuff, but colors get screwed because white is see-through, and any other color other than black uses some white. and itd be really hard to see because youd need external lighting...
But! it will be posssible with OLED screens when they are finished. i cant wait for that time! - Scorcho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That was really awesome. I wonder how many people behind the computers people with absolutely no lives.
- thetbad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the see-through cloting from Japan better.
- obrienslalom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dup
- Funkly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0c'mon now.. this was up just a few days ago... heres the video version...
http://joefilip.blogspot.com/2005/12/transparent-desktop-newest-thing-from.html - compy386, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some of those are clearly photoshoped or something, the ones with the hards that are holding the screen and there are no figers, fake fake fake. I know this can be done, but some aren't real.
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Amazing with how little braincells are required to submit a comment here: lame, seen before, photoshopped, old, old...
People wondering about other peoples life. I mean, how much life does one has who just visits digg every day to just post "old" (or even very old)
What have you done to amaze us recently? Oh, wait, you have no life. Well, go out and get one. - osxisthebest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0old but none the less still entertaining
- 13mx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder why mine did not show up http://static.flickr.com/21/31533156_c148a4900e_o.jpg
- broscup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who has less of a life, the people taking these pictures, or the people who know how many times it's been dugg.
I'll digg it. - Stillbored, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://flickr.com/photos/58099325@N00/19657191/
- spyres, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With photoshop (or even gimp for that matter) there is a dead simple way to make these.
Mount a digital camera on a tripod to keep it steady.
Set the background color of the screen to be green or blue. (This gives the icons isolated in a field of solid color).
Snap the picture with the icons against the solid color BG.
Keeping the camera in position on the tripod, remove the laptop and take a second picture.
You know have two pictures, one with the laptop with the icons against a blue or green background and another that is "background only" without the laptop.
Fire up Photoshop or the Gimp.
On the first photo, selection the area of the screen that's a solid color (easily done due to the solid color).
Delete the green/blue information.
You know have an image with a precisely cut out area where the Background goes.
Open the second picture (background only) and copy it.
Paste this image into the selection on the first image. Move it around if you need to line it up a bit.
With the image pasted in, you can darken/lighten it a bit for a more "transparent like effect".
This is an especially easy trick because setting a nice solid green (or blue or whatever) as the desktop bg makes replacing that with a background a piece of cake. Just a few simple steps and simple as hell for anyone who knows how to use an editing imaging program.
Lame as hell that this would make the front page. - diggismycollege, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0holy ***** thats awesome!
- diggmeplease, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lame? This is amazing!
- 71M80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this has been on digg like 10 times now.
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Amen broscup. I am amazed on how often I see those "seen before" comments. Instead, post something we haven't seen before. There is always someone who has seen it before, but really, if I want to read that all the time, I print it on the toilet paper I use.
- DamnedEyez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm torn between "this is cool" and "there's got to be more productive uses of their time"
- overaction, on 07/14/2009, -0/+0I did this too, not so impressive though since I really don't have anything behind my screen except for half a paper fish, a few paint runs, and a light switch cord thingy. http://people.aero.und.edu/~ewondras/transparency.jpg
- krux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wasn't this on digg before?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's pretty damn cool
- RMuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Definatly cool.
- lightningrod220, on 10/12/2007, -0/+013mx, yours looks fake, as the arm goes over the icons and other parts of the desktop, and the image isn't aligned properly. A couple in the slide show also appear to be photoshopped, or they found a way to get rid of the glare that would normally make the screen slightly different, which is pretty stinking hard to do.
- protocoI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You could do some of the hand ones without shopping. The one with the guy without a sleeve holding the window is done by taking a picture of his arm, then making that the background, putting the window over the hand, taking a picture of THAT, then displaying a that on a screen, and simply pointing with the right hand. Three picture process that the creator said was how he did it.
The one with a sleeve, just put your arm out in front with your hand in the sleeve, and line it up with the wrist in the background. No shopping needed. - vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most are probably just Photoshop'd anyways.
Except for setup to take the "transparent screens" photo - think how stupid almost all of them look when you're out and about with your laptop. - lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jeez, it just takes two minutes. Take a picture, connect it to your laptop, set as wallpaper. It's easier with a CF slot on a PDA.
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is posible of you remove the backlight and caseing
- J3bu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old, but thanks anyway
- jaypatrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Better quality snaps here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/w00kie/sets/180637/show/
- j.carcinogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0photoshop, wow. what is wrong with you people?
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This has been around a few times, but it's still pretty cool.
- nevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it would be cooler if you could make a set up so that there was like maybe a small camera on the back of your laptop, or screen, that would actually show you what was behind it for a background. make it really seem transparent.
- yoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there should be a nude version by now
- ColdWind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very old but... cool!
- Satertek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I made a pretty decent one without having to mess with it much.
http://satertek.info/images/newmonitor.jpg - patonw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"lots of laptop owners with lots of time and cats, eh? makes sense."
It should be obvious that the cats are behind this madness. - ForbesBingley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is older than satans toe jam...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0+ digg
- diggmeplease, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Lemme rephrase that. bpinard and arestme are idiots. not Lorian.
- suprfli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0people have waaaaay too much ***** time on their hands
- OwlBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0very old.
- Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0So they just took a photo and set it as the background then lined it up properly?
- Makyla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0so many of these are fake.
- reverb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Really old meme.
