- rewritable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I sure hope they come with at least an AGP slot. all those $300 dells dont (this what? the year 2005 come on dell) and they only have room inside for one hard drive so dont get yer hopes up people. My compaq came all kinds of crap and I bought it brand new 2 years ago for $300 (monitor and all). But it still has alot of limits built-in though. So next computer will be custom so I know EXACTLY what I am getting and what it is capable of.
- nukethewhales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But how much for a PC that can play the next two years of games at an acceptable frame rate?
- lart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1there are also a bunch of off brand PCs that you can get for sub 300

- igibson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh crap..... is this another powerbook riot in the making?
- syuusuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0woo, time to chuck my p2 266 :X
- andrewcool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just for a basic computer, but grahpics cards cost alot :(
- rawr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A brand new computer can be a piece of crap, what about an SLI kit for under $300.
- meshgiath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0< always built all of mine =)
But dyam to buying cheap crap PC's to load other OS's on and to test/play with random apps etc...
L jeah beech! - torindkflt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember a few years back eMachines had a few models they were selling for "free free FREE!!!"...
...then, when you read the 0.000001pt-sized fine print on the label, you realized you had to pay like $500 ahead of time for three years of internet service from no-name places with absolutely no option of backing out.
As mentioned before, eMachines used to be literal crap. Although they're still not near the top of my list of recommendations today, they have become decent enough for the basic home user. - nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These cheapo systems aren't too bad for older folks who just want to surf the web/send emails to their families.
Not everyone is a hardcore nerd who has to have the latest and greatest hardware. - hankrearden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The low end Dells just are not worth it if you plan to do any upgrades at all. They are good for our mothers and aunts who just want to do email, write a letter, and vist digg.com. LOL.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There are digg users out there who don't build their own computers!? You should all be ashamed of yourselves! :)
- heatpackrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i got dell SC420 for ~330 delivered...
2.8 P4,
256mb ram,
two 80gb sata hard drives,
mouse, keyboard, cdrom drive
i bought 1gig of memory for 80 bucks, and could spend another 100 for a normal video card (if i wanted to game on it).
CPU doesnt get hotter than 44C, and now i have a computer that'll last the next 5 or so years, for ~500 bucks.
plus it comes with no OS = no spyware.

400 bucks. Its called the xbox360 :P - Pooavenger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think they are talking about getting a ***** PC for $300.
- DardanAeneas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems like a good article. I dugg it because this is *theoretically* a news site, right?
- shad0w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm pretty sure you can pick up a crappy dell for $300 already. Thanks for the non-news. Let me know when computers hit $100.
- triont, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you can all ready get a dell for 300$ lol! i got my Compaq for 400$! come on lol.
- Wang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great depending on what you need the system for. Sadly gamers get a bit of a raw deal atm...with AGP dying rapidly and PCI-E becoming more of a necessity (ATI/Nvidia new cards are all PCI-E, no more AGP). I have a (fairly good) socket A processor...and now I am forced to change motherboard, processor, and gfx card - just to get PCI-E graphics, because they don't seem to be making socket A motherboards with PCI-E slots :|
- kevin.gc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Both HP and Dell sell $300 kits that include a basic PC, printer, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
- N3LDAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A friend of mine got a $600 emachines (no monitor) and stuck a 6800gt in the PCIe slot, the thing rips all hell. Athlon 3400+ (that 1.6ghz really kicks ass) 1 GB of no-name RAM, which gets the job done if you're not overclocking. It was definetly the most affordable way to get a gaming PC. Even with the stock card, he could play BF2 on medium settings.
- truk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even now a $300 PC is no problem. The truth is that a $300 basic PC is a huge upgrade if your old PC is several years old, even if your old machine was high end when it was new. While most Digg users would not want a $300 PC as their primary desktop, they are perfect for people who are "normal users" and use them for Office and Internet access. For the rest of us, they make great boxes to stick in the basement with a couple really big drives to use for file servers or whatever.
- NightShade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0walmart.com has entry level machines in the sub $200 range.
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Grammar defeats yet another digg! "Get ready those Beowulf!"... sounds like a line from a crappy Viking movie.
As for the eMachines.... they're great systems. Just buy one for $400-$500, spend $200-$300 upgrading/replacing stuff, and you've got a cheap cheap machine that will run just as well as the mid-range systems selling for over $1000. - Pharoah6905, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0when i saw the word beowulf i imediately shuddered because i just had to read that book for school, however i do like what the article has to say
- swoosh_bnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Why can't gas prices take the same trend...

- xyzzyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I got a refurb dimension 4700 for $300 shipped from dell w/1 year on-site warranty. Had 512MB ram and 2 open memory slots, and an open pci-e graphics slot. I figured for the ram, that 2.8ghz p4 w/ht, and the 80gig hard drive and additional cd-burner, i can always throw them in a new case w/mb if i ever really wanted to upgrade. but in a year or two i'll just sell it and buy a newer one. if i want to game i have my console, but i'm 24 now and haven't gamed longer than 15 minutes a pop since i decided sex was more fun.
What is Digg?
