"That is some ***** up ***** right there is what that is."
Meh, what do you expect from a company that calls itself an enormous orgasm in every commercial. - moracity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My wife ordered a giant rug from overstock.com last Friday. Yesterday (morning), she received and email saying the rug had shipped. When she arrived home from work, the rug had been delivered. How awesome is that? Maybe it shipped from a local warehouse.
The only problem we had was the idiot delivery person. It was raining off and on all day and the person takes the 8 foot long rug, leans it up over on the side of the house, in the mud, THEN leaves a note on the front door (A COVERED 10 sq ft AREA), saying that the rug was on the right-side of the house. Luckily, the rug was doubled wrapped with some heavy duty plastic.
Many of the stories I see about overstock.com seem to be regarding electronics, which are generally hot items...especially at the bargains they generally have. I'm not familiar with their business model, but the name implies that quantities on any item would be limited. They should be working even more diligently to keep their inventory system up to date. It sounds like they have a tendency to oversell their overstock. - axcess99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I rather have a kick to the face, then buy from these clowns!"
I'm confused. Why do you want to be both kicked in the face and subsequently buy something from them? :-p (you want "than" not "then" and no comma)
Seriously though, this is good to know. I've made purchases in the past and they've been good deals and i had no problems with them. But I will keep this under consideration in the future. - rohcky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2^^ I think he's a masochist. Thats why he'd get kicked in the face and endure the process of ordering from Overstock.
- KirbyP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is the Register article any less objective than that blog about PriceRightPhoto? They told their personal story, added some news bits about the CEO and linked to other similar experiences. I personally was just now butting up against my first such experience with them and was getting frustrated (as I had used them with a lot of success in the past). When I saw this article I googled to see what else was out there, and guess what? Tons of complaints are in cyberspace. Of course, too late for me in that I just ordered a load of stuff for Christmas, but no electronics so I am hoping for the best.
And I love the Register, you just have to read it with your sense of humor intact. - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hell yeah.

I went to their live chat and waited 50 minutes for someone to tell me it shipped 3 days ago and paste me the tracking URL. I still haven't received my junk. won't be shopping there again anytime soon..
- Yanks2435, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just 2 weeks ago Overstock put the wrong price up for a flat panel LCD TV. A 32" that's supposed to cost over 1,000 and the price was at $300. Needless to say I bought one and went back for two more but they locked it out to correct the error. It came a few days later.
- Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"with one exception"
...is the part I would say is the point I'm trying to get across here, the main point if you will. - sedition, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"After hearing about Priceritephoto and now overstock. I'm going to seriously reconsider ever buying anything online again!"
Would you stop shopping in general if I gave you a list of the thousands of brick and motar companies suck as much as these guys? - bigwang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I always heard about how The Register is a horrible news source, and I never really got that from reading their tech articles, but this is a really bad piece. No objectivity to speak of.
- Ryland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I pre-ordered a book from them a couple years ago. The deal was that they would ship the book so that I would receive the book on the day it was released nationwide - which was the point of *pre-ordering*. They later e-mailed me and said that the book wouldn't ship in time, so I wrote back and asked them to cancel the order. They said they *couldn't* cancel it. After a few rounds of increasingly angry e-mails, they finally agreed to cancel the order, and actually did so (to my surprise). Then, on the day the book was supposed to arrive... it arrived. They shipped it, on time even though they said they couldn't, and even though the order was cancelled and I was never charged for it. Go figure.
- mtalon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stupid commercial, and now lousy customer service.
Not gonna cry when this company tanks. - Wolfman~K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0overstock is the worst... I have had 3 orders with them and 2 of them had serious problems either with shipping or damaged product....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh Oh Oh! The Big Big O! Overstock.com!
I rather have a kick to the face, then buy from these clowns! - tolbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ouch, although the article could be seen as slightly subjective, they do make a good point, O's going on a downward spiral.
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When I first started to see all of those ad for the BIG O everywhere in the cable dial, I knew something was going a stray with this company. Overstock.com Pud hall of fame here we come.
- dailyclerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow. this is surprising to hear. but hten again, the last time i bought from overstock was about 3 years ago. The greatest thing about them at that time was they sent me two color multifunction printers when I only ordered one. Maybe that was the beginning of the end?
It also sounds like the CEO is having some sort of break down or is bi-polar or something b/c those tirades are ridiculous. I'm surprised the board hasn't ousted him yet. - brettshow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I ordered something from Overstock.com last month, and they sent me an email the day it was supposed to ship and said they don't have that item. How can you sell something you don't have???? It's Amazon from now on with me. Actually Amazon lost one of my packages in the mail too, what is up with everyone????
- thelandlady, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Living in the town that is Overstock's headquarters I know quit a few people who have worked for them. The company is a complete joke and I could never see anyone ever wanting to work for them...ever. They mostly worked in the creative department, but know some people who work in other areas as well. They also pay their employees virtually nothing. Maybe that is why no one really cares what happens there...
- absinthemind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I ordered a coffee pot from them a few weeks back. Same thing others have reported; no email updates but 4-5 days after I order they contact me saying they're out of stock. It was a good price, so I said whatever, ship it when you get it; I didn't want it till the weather got cold anyway.
So, about a week later I get a box from them. Cool I think, great deal. NOT AT ALL. It was literally a *very* used looking coffee pot in a big brown shipping box full of peanuts. No retail box inside, no manufacturer's materials, with the pot itself taped to the maker with packaging tape and the filter taped inside. The pot even had water spots and smelled like burnt coffee. Needless to say, I took some pictures, put it back in the box, sent it back and filed a complaint with just about anyone I could think of. What a joke, all for a $30 coffee pot. - drewmeister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Given Overstock's mounting losses, falling customer service quality and technology issues, the company has serious work ahead if it's to compete with savvy giants such as eBay and Amazon."
Not to mention a completely bonkers CEO.
After reading this article, I would say that this is the understatement of the year. - Fosowp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bought a 250 pound butcher block from them. Cost me 1.99 to ship and arrived in 5 days or so. Very happy. However, I am not sure how they make $$$ shipping 250 pounds for 2 bucks.
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've browse their site before but never found anything that great... I'll stick to Fry's Electronics ads and Amazon....
- harley999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dont trust the coupons to this site, once you enter via a coupon link, it raises the prices on the items..
I entered with that %12 off link and it stated that it would give me the discount at checkout, but it raised the price of the watch I wanted from $129.99 to $139.99. - duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I ordered from overstock recently and saw on my reciept that it was the wrong size. OVERSTOCK.COM WILL NOT CANCEL AN ORDER FOR ANY REASON! I called multiple times and all the customer dis-service reps had to say was, i'm sorry, its company policy not to cancel an order. BS
Eventually I just got pissed and said FU overstock, and had my creditcard company deny the charges.
See how fast they cancel an order when they dont get paid :)
FU OVERSTOCK! - Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I LOVE this part:
"On the coke head thing, and by the way, I’ve never, with one exception, I’ve never even seen cocaine in my life so in case you’re wondering, no, I’m not a coke head."
I've never heard such words out of someone who's done coke before...oh wait...ALL coke heads say this crazy *****. What more convincing do you need? - JayRod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I new somebody who bought a PDA a couple months ago and ended up getting 3 of them. Maybe it's the employees not paying attention to the quantity. I can just imagine some kind of assembly line with no time to double check everything. Maybe their work enviroment is hurry, hurry, hurry ---- go,go,go. And they could careless about what happens because they are probably getting low wages.
When you don't pay an employee very good they don't take their job too seriously and crazy things can happen. Like shipping out the coffee pot from the break room instead of a new one. As in the case of absinthemind - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, they may suck -- but the chick on their ads is supersexyhot. Sometime's... it's all about the sex appeal.
- graypill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am very new at ordering with Overstock, and will not buy from them again.
so far some items were not what I'd expected, but last night the bottom fell out. Overstock emailed me late last night regarding a small electronics order I placed last week, their email said "Your order #xxxxxx has been canceled per your request". Not only did I not cancel the order,(which isn't allowed anyway), I was online placing the order while on the phone speaking with a sales rep who was also logged onto my account. We were discussing how to ship the order and she guaranteed me the item would be here on time! Last night I called customer service about the email and was told "Overstock tends to accept too many orders (and payment)for items actually in stock, sorry". I should have read the article BEFORE trying Overstock for Christmas. - jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The O is for Oprah.
Seriously, though, I've gotten a few very good deals from Overstock. In the past, they haven't been an issue at all. I can't give an opinion either way about today. But in the past? Awesome at times. - misterpony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0all these stories about the trials of online buying. it'd be nice to see an expose from a major network/newspaper soon.
"Has Online Shopping Reached Its Pinnacle?" - mikerichmond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just ordered some items from overstock (6 dining room chairs). I was really impressed. They all arrived in 2 days (and only $1 for shipping, I might add). Everything was very smooth, I don't know what everyone is talking about.
- CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Funny how their business tries to sell stuff that no one else could sell or wanted to buy.
- ronzick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I order a camera from them, they shipped me two and charged my credit card twice with two different amounts(The exact same camera). After over a month they just credit the money back to my account today. I won't be shopping there again.
- hollywoodcole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg++
I HATE OVERSTOCK! Another Tigerdirect. - Jarrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is why I love the internet. The little guy can win. Now I know not to buy from the "O", no matter how many commercials I see with a model slinking around in a white room.
- AlanLivingston, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh Criminy!
What's this gay cokehead whining about now? - petomni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I once bought a keyboard and mouse from them. When they arrived both had serial numbers scratched off of the bottom and the keyboard did not work -- but to their credit they actually took it back relatively painlessly. They never did explain the missing serial numbers, were they stolen or refurbished without informing the consumer? I'll never know.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy *****, that company's CEO is ***** wacko, him and Manson would be good roommates. LOL
- CrashKC, on 08/25/2008, -0/+0I would pay good money for an mp3 of that conference call...
- Spaztic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I ordered a Down Comforter from them and it arrived in a few days. No problems IMO...will order from them again.
- jased, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Never bought anything from them, just love the chickie on the ads
- febryle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quick, everyone call Overstock.com on Skype and ask to speak with Steve Phillips.
- freakazoidjake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Really, you can't blame the Customer Service Reps... they are just doing their jobs for an idiot company.
Let me tell you my story, and see if this affects your opinion:
I was the cream of the crop at Overstock.com, and so I thought that I would apply for the Customer Team Lead position. So I did. And I got it, and right before the holiday season. Well, with the holiday season, every crazy person with every unreasonable expectation crawled out from every rock on the planet and decided to call overstock.com and request a supervisor. Soon after I had taken many Sup calls (as they are called), I began to have anxiety attacks, and I had problems even getting out of bed to go to work, and I missed about 10 days total. On one of these occasions, I went to the instacare and got a doctors note, along with a prescription of Klonopin, and the doctor advised me to talk to my Primary Care Physician. So I scheduled an appointment and informed my Supervisor that I had a doctor's appointment, and she let me go. So I went to the doctor, and she diagnosed me with Severe depression, Anxiety and told me that I was Bi-Polar. She gave me medication and told me that I needed to take these pills every day, and that I needed to stay away from work for four days. I Promptly went to my Supervisor and she said that she would work it out with HR and her supervisor and I would be okay.
So... I come back after my leave, and My Supervisor and HER Supervisor took me up to HR and told me that missing important holiday shopping days was "unacceptable" and demoted me to a lesser department, cut my pay, and gave me a final written warning. (If I miss one more day or if I'm late on one occasion, I would be fired.) So... because of Job stress, I am paying for it with my job. So I'm doing what I can with FMLA, but it doesn't look like anything is going to happen.
So my personal advice is: Don't shop there. Don't give them any money, and let them run themselves into the ground.
Oh, and it's rumored that Pat snorts lines on his desk.
:) - justchil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I just wanna finger bang the chick on the commercials... never ordered anything from them.

http://digg.com/links/Overstock.com_is_sticking_it_to_paypal_ - angelschambers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0All major companies have poor (and robotic) customer service. They purposefully try to get you to hang up by keeping you on hold and switching you to different extensions. They figure that you'll probably get too frustrated to call back. I used to work at Citibank and AOL. At both places, I've had managers look right into my eyes and tell me those exact words. The only thing I can recommend is that you check with the BBB online before making major purchases http://www.bbbonline.org/
- Synthetik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0After hearing about Priceritephoto and now overstock. I'm going to seriously reconsider ever buying anything online again!
