Boss: OK, so you're sure this new IPv4 will have enough addresses for this new "Inter Net", yes?
IT guy: Psh! Of course. I've given it over 4 BILLION! Like that's ever going to run out.
Boss: Ha! Yes, yes, you're right. - jake07, on 02/05/2008, -7/+122So there's going to be more porn? Yes or no.
- geminitojanus, on 02/05/2008, -5/+87IPv6 has 2^64 addresses. That gives every human being alive roughly two billion addresses. Every single computer in the entire world can have its own block of a few hundred thousand IPv6 addresses without any significant worry about the future. IPv6 was designed with this in mind. Even if there comes a day when there are quadrillions of computers, they'll still have plenty of addresses to go around.
This will hold us over for a very, very, very long time. - MasterThief117, on 02/05/2008, -4/+83So is the Internet still going to be a series of tubes?
- theysayjump, on 02/05/2008, -7/+84That's what SHE said.
- dyranios2, on 02/05/2008, -3/+75People might agree with your comment.
But not likely. - unknownsoldierX, on 02/05/2008, -4/+62Except he never actually said that. It's a myth.

That gives every human being THAT HAS EVER LIVED roughtly two billion addresses. Some other ridiculous comparisons:
Every star in the Milky Way gets a couple million.
Every cell in your body is individually addressable, with a few hundred thousand addresses. - Romanito, on 02/05/2008, -0/+47How do I get ipv6 connectivity and join in the fun?
- dumpyhumpy, on 02/05/2008, -0/+46What the ***** kind of router is $200?
- mntbikeracer1, on 02/05/2008, -1/+45I have a $300 toaster I am willing to sell you as well, and it is future proof. Interested?
- bsdboy, on 02/05/2008, -1/+41You don't need to 'enable' anything, ipv6 is already enabled for you. A better question would be: "How do I get ipv6 connectivity and join in the fun?"
- meshman, on 02/05/2008, -3/+39"On 4 February the master or root servers for the net will have a small number of records added that are written in IP version 6 (IPv6) added to them."
They're going to add them twice? - Albumen, on 02/05/2008, -0/+36Damnit! I just paid for my "There's no place like 127.0.0.1" t-shirt too! Really though. I have been dreading this. I hate HEX. Its a pain in the ass.
- doshindude, on 02/05/2008, -7/+41ipv8: 2015.
You watch. - Moshcrates, on 02/05/2008, -2/+32I don't see what the big deal is. 3ffe:ffff:101::230:6eff:fe04:d9ff is so much easier to remember than xx.xxx.xxx.xxx..............ugh
- crash331, on 02/05/2008, -2/+32Flase. How many times does that quote have to be debunked?
- pgillan, on 02/05/2008, -1/+30I think I received an email recently about making my tube bigger. This must have been what they were talking about.
- youdlike2know, on 02/05/2008, -3/+31they are making the tubes bigger?
- fkr3, on 02/05/2008, -0/+27Your ISP already knows which account has what IP address on their network at any given time. And who's name the account is in. I hear they know where you live too.
- MikeFromAmerica, on 02/05/2008, -0/+27Ask your ISP. They'll probably just scratch their heads and have no idea what you're talking about though.
- bsdboy, on 02/05/2008, -10/+35Looks like those who forgot about EDNS0 will only be able to see the A-G root servers. I never liked the H-M servers anyway :-)
dig @a.root-servers.net ns +bufsize=512 +notcp - mercnet, on 02/05/2008, -6/+29Does this mean I have to enable IPv6 in Ubuntu and Firefox?
- dbr_onix, on 02/05/2008, -0/+21You can see if you are IPv6able by (trying) to load the following pages:
http://ipv6.research.microsoft.com/
http://ipv6-test.singnet.com.sg (Cation: obnoxious auto-playing sound if it fails) - weeeezzll, on 02/05/2008, -0/+20http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Bill_Gates#Misattribu ...
- u2wedge, on 02/05/2008, -1/+21Can't Hide in North America?
- theysayjump, on 02/05/2008, -1/+20Just to be on the safe side.
- ramenite, on 02/05/2008, -1/+19There's no place like ::1
- logicbus, on 02/05/2008, -2/+19Wouldn't that be a MAC address?
- weeeezzll, on 02/05/2008, -0/+16Your saying that because you don't understand just how ludicrous IPv6's 2^128 address space is.
The surface of Earth is approximately 510 trillion square meters. Dividing that into 2^128 (three hundred forty undecillion! ARRRGGGHHH!!! My brain hurts really bad!) addresses yields approximately 667 sextillion addresses per square meter. THAT IS 667,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 PER SQUARE METER of earth surface!!! ZOMGWTFBBQ!!!!11!!one!
For even more fun: There are (roughly) 8,715,450,940,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 molecules of water on this planet. That is (3.40282367 × 10^38) / (8.71545094 × 10^30) = 39,043,575.5. So...IPv6 contains enough addresses to give each and every molecule of water on this planet almost 40 Million IP addresses.
I can't find any good numbers to work with but i'm going to venture as far as to guess that we have at least enough IPv6 addresses to give at least one to every atom in the top 1 meters of the surface of this planet. - capiCrimm, on 02/05/2008, -0/+16will this toaster try to stab me? I've been having problems with my last toaster.
http://xkcd.com/293/ - slamtv7, on 02/05/2008, -0/+16Hope it supports DDWRT, love that firmware. You can increase the range with it. Makes my ***** $50 Linksys work like a dream.
- fkr3, on 02/05/2008, -0/+15Reality, page 12.
- garvallagh, on 02/05/2008, -1/+16Does this mean that im going to have to learn subnetting all over a-*****-gain
- diggydoh, on 02/05/2008, -0/+15Yep, I saw Godaddy now has an IPv6 A-Record you can set up for a domain.
- Philluminati, on 02/05/2008, -1/+15Wrong. IPV6 has 2 ^ 128 according to wikipedia.
citation provided: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6 - zaqarov, on 02/05/2008, -3/+17No, with IPv6, there going to start putting the tubes in a parallel circuit.
- notthemama, on 02/05/2008, -5/+19I hope I can just flash my router's bios to handle this. This router isn't even 6 months old yet.
I wish they had notified the router mfrs so we could already have been buying them BEFORE they started added ipv6 to the central tables. - fkr3, on 02/05/2008, -0/+13http://[2001:c20:ffff:2a::2]/cgi-bin/IPv6-Test doesn't resolve for me (the singnet one).
A shame really, I'm bored with typing ip addresses in and I've been looking for a way to combine hex, sodoku and browing the internet. : ( - DanAtkinson, on 02/05/2008, -1/+14You're either a troll, or don't know what you're talking about. Either way, it's something that's already possible in IPv4.
- jbirdman, on 02/05/2008, -1/+14IPv6 has 2^128 addresses, not 2^64.
- Philluminati, on 02/05/2008, -0/+13The joke is now "There's no place like ::1/128"
You may very well be the first people to laugh at this joke! A joke which could be around for ever since we'll never run out of IPv6 addresses. - noumuon, on 02/05/2008, -0/+13... i don't know where to begin. first, 2^64 is not double 2^32... 2^33 is double 2^32 ... learn something about exponents. second, ipv6 supports 2^128 addresses.
- heaintheavy, on 02/05/2008, -1/+13Please, God, YES...
- bryhhh, on 02/05/2008, -0/+12localhost? Surely you mean "There is no place like ~"?
- cranium, on 02/05/2008, -0/+11- the goal is to push mandatory permanent IP addresses for all devices that connect to the internet -
That's just stupid. IP addresses are assigned according to the subnet that they're on, that's what makes routing possible. It's unworkable to assign them at manufacturing time, it wouldn't serve any purpose not already served by the MAC address. - frontporsche, on 02/05/2008, -1/+12I just received my $1.99 netgear router from ebay.
- Zaggynl, on 02/05/2008, -0/+11Going to be a busy interwebs :o
- Nimphious, on 02/05/2008, -0/+11Nah, there will just be more of them.
- merreborn, on 02/05/2008, -0/+10Your MAC address can only be seen by the first router between you and the rest of the net. Beyond that point, you're just an IP.
