- Ascendant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+59How to overcome procrastination:
Step 1: stop spending so much time on digg. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I've got a great technique
Edit your /etc/hosts file to add this line
digg.com 127.0.0.1
You'll get a lot more done! - mctk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Are you kidding? I love procrastination. I get the most done when I'm procrastinating. For example, if I have a lot of work to finish by Monday, I put it off as long as I can by filling my time with other menial tasks. This is when I clean the house, do my laundry, call my family, answer all those emails, workout, and pay the bills. If I didn't procrastinate, I'd never get anything done!

This doesn't work for the same reason I can't wake up earlier by setting my clock ahead a few minutes. I remember I did it, and adjust accordingly. Or in this case, I'd be like ***** this, and just go re-edit my hosts file.
- WickedDrag0oN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5First step to conquering your procrastination is getting off WOW...
- twmsdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This would be good for me. I have a huge problem with procrastination. Hurts my grades in school because I can't get my work done in time. Looks like a good article.
- intangible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@kowgod
I know exactly what you're saying... my biggest wish in life right now is that someone would sneak into my room daily and set my clock forward while I sleep without telling me, and then adjust it back while I'm at work. - AeroGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That worked great for me too until I ended up memorizing their IP addresses by entering them manually one time too many.
- MacGyver, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Never gets old. There's been 4 or 5 articles about procrastination on digg in the last few months and that's always one of the first comments.
- jonohull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wait until the last minute for things also, but it ends up getting done, and being my best work for some reason.
- intangible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have a problem called "New Shiny Thing Syndrome", but coupled with procrastination, the two almost cancel the negative effects out.
Let me explain:
So I see a new shiny thing, think "My God, I've got to have that" (the last thing was the hydrofoil kayak)
BUT, because I procrastinate on the purchase, by the time I really think about it, I decide I prob. won't use "New Shiny Thing" as much as I think, or it won't be as great as I think...
If I didn't procrastinate, I would be in debt over my head because of my other "problem". Therefore procrastination isn't a problem, it is a "blessing"; embrace it as such.
I was going to write a "Procrastinator's Creed"... but I haven't gotten to it yet. - shawnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think this is worthy of mention:
http://www-csli.stanford.edu/~john/procrastination.html
Edit: I guess so. It seems it already has been. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I used to be a bad procrastinator. Finally I gave up and decided I would just plan to procrastinate each week. It was a great plan but unfortunately I keep putting it off and end up working instead.
- tlink211, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Print too small...article too long.....think I'll play Quake...
- EricTheGrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My company seems to want to improve my production because they have blocked that site. :P
EtG - lummox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digging so I can read later.
- CarbonAndroid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3But it feels so good.
- anthony1124, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5According to the article you must replace "have to" read this later with "want to" and you'll have "guaranteed fun" in rightfully doing so.
- mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those who have a "daily Do pile" - depending on how big the pile is, quantify the work in a unit of measure (e.g. - inches, cms). Try to get through only that amount. The pile will seem less daunting, especially if you manage to get through the allotted amount. You'd be surprised at how much of an inbox is simply paper that needs to be reviewed quickly and then filed.
- Anthraxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'll read it later
- Psylabs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg!
- mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sleep on big problems. You'd be surprised how many good ideas come after a night's sleep.
- elmerfudd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dealt with mid-life crisis by getting an MBA, on top of career employment and raising a family. I'm glad those days (the MBA part) are behind me. This was on my wall:
"Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now"
http://www.despair.com/proc24x30pri.html - noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'll say one thing; the section entitled "Replace Deprivation With Guaranteed Fun" is gold dust; or more specifically, the part where you say that you will *not* work more than x hours on something. I'm guilty of spending a 12 hour day "working" and getting nothing done because I "know" that I have plenty of time. Ironically, if I restrict myself, I get more work done (because the clock is ticking), work better, and enjoy my free time.
- skytimelapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, how dare he give me good advice! What nerve!
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Exactly what I was going to say, half jokingly, and half seriously.
Whenever I really need to get (*$% done, I remap slashdot, fark, and digg in my hosts file, and then I get ($*% done. - DinkyDink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was definitley a story about this a few days ago on the front page.
- Sage-Tech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Anyone notice it was under the "Developer" section? What's he trying to say?
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They're lucky I'm even reading the comments, let alone the article. But seriously, I started reading it, and there's good stuff in there. I'll Digg it and read it later.
- tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As ironic as it sounds....like several other people have said, I am digging this so I can get around to reading it later. Procrastination....those of us who NEED to read the article the most will be the ones who will never get around to reading it....
- crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea, sounds like dog training.
- PantherX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No Digg. I've seen plenty of articles like this. I will make a comparison to an article that I won't write, because I'm procrastinating, called:
HOW TO BE BETTER AT VIDEO GAMES
Step 1: Shoot Better - You're never going to win teh game if you don't aim for the head and keep missing your target
Step 2: Jump Over There... No Not There... Over There... No... Why the hell can't you understand where I'm talking about?
Step 3: Quit dying. You can't win if you are dead. Just quit dying. - kimos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is awesome. I went from playing warcraft to reading Digg, both while I should be studying for my exam...
Now I wonder if i can procrastinate reading the article AND studying. - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's not procrasination. That's thinking about a purchase. And if the purchase is big enough, you should sleep on the decision to buy before you buy.
I keep "meaning" to buy a Mac. But my two year-old Lifebook is working just fine. Between the absence of a real need to buy a Mac and the fear of getting burned by the next rev, I've decided to hold off until the end of this year at least, when the MacBook and/or 12" MBP will (hopefully) be available. - truspark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This Pavlina is some kind of poser. His articles are consistency filled with trite ideas. My favorite idea of his was an article he posted a couple of weeks ago on how to get rich. It basically boiled down to creating a website that garnered a ton of traffic - like his. Only problem was the reason people were flocking to his site were to read his article on how to get rich. Motivational speaking/writing is such a ponzi scheme.
- Sage-Tech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I actually do that too.
- Kendal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This article is just an exercise in symantics, people aren't stupid, they either want to do something or they don't. Telling yourself you 'want to' do something instead of 'having to' do something makes you a self-deciever, a liar or an idiot. These suggestions are crud, dried crud, served on a bed of crud, with a side of crud with a choise of crud dressings, and crud for desert.
- Xophmeister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem I have with all these "how to stop procrastinating" sites is that there's so much stuff to read... It's not gonna happen ;)
- wardriver20, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's a PDF file. In case someone wants to save it.
http://rapidshare.de/files/18035172/Overcoming_Procrastination.pdf.html - stumpadoodle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah the thing most nonprocrastinators, as well as people who give advice on many other problems that they don't have, is that they don't realize that it isn't as easy as their silly little tips make it out to be. You don't just STOP putting things off....
- kramer3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If I would have known that thinking differntly would help procrastination would have helped me.. I would have done it a long time ago! This article sucks!
- gaijintendo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Turn off your RSS feed, Block your #1 favourite forum, if possible diconnect from the internet. Have a shower when you have to think about a problem. Go for breaks in the fresh air. Like your job.
- splatnik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1heh, was about to make the same comment ; )
- Anoobis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That's what I'm wanting to do though. I gotta sort myself out here. I've still got to read another procrastination article that was on the front page of digg a week or so ago too!
- cybertron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I "want to" read this article.
