- nmoog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Reviewed by hand? Thats a bit web1.0 isn't it?
- harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Please stop link spamming in the comments.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Haha, nice use of subdomain.
- Edogz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is an interesting site. (I like their "smooth" scrolling whenever you click a link) =}
Although I believe a lot of web2.0 is just hype (All that eye-candy makes my eyes hurt...), it is interesting looking at some of the 'styles' people are using.. - casiotone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6nah, he's done it on other comments for other stories too. --digg.
- Oatmeal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sorry about the slowness everyone, should be better in a few.
-Matt (seomoz.org) - longman2g, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5anyone else notice that digg got number 2? maybe we should be going to newsvine instead
- nebunezzar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Nah, we got ripped, especially on interface and content quality. Of course, I only care about tech, so I could be wrong.
- longman2g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i think that this "web 2.0" might have just hit its max, starting to slow down alot
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's kind of disgusting that there are even 700 "web 2.0" sites.
- TechnoPops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3nmoog, you're a genius! Make a Web 2.0 site that uses some AI to automatically review Web 2.0 sites! I can see the IPO already...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like it. therefore digg. A nice change from the usual giant list of sites that provide little or no info.
- lenwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3jpfinch is right, Newsvine isn't a competitor for Digg. Shoutwire is almost a direct rip. My guess is that it won't stay though. Did anyone notice how quickly leve1 disappeared? Now its some Nintendo site. I think Digg is here to stay. Plus, they keep improving Digg, so maybe by the time the next list like this is generated, Digg will be on top.
- matrixclown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Negative Digg all you want....
newsvine is a more classical news site. the whole social bookmarking stuff while cool and awsome still isn't as easy to use as newsvine. say I want to see linux stories for example in newsvine i click the linux (hypothetically) button and magically all the stories about linux appear. Digg is harder to navigate in that sense. Definatly not to this generation but look at the other generations.... and people with there VCR's blinking 12:00 wondering if they should go out and buy a new fangled DVC player - katfive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry we couldn't notice and award everyone. There are just so many "Web 2.0" sites out there (and new ones created every day)! At some point we had to decide when to stop looking and let users suggest the ones we failed to see. We're glad to take your suggestions, but we didn't purposely exclude any sites.
(Kat @ SEOmoz, author, Web 2.0 Awards) - lenwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is one of the coolest things I've seen on Digg.
- zakharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i thought craig's list was around for web 1.0... now it is 2.0? will it make it to 3.0?
- randfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When we were building this, we really intended to approach it from a very skeptical perspective. I was never a big believer in the phenomenon personally, but seeing and using all these sites has given me more insight. To me, the truly successful sites (and those we awarded) are using all this cool technology and their spiffy interfaces to make solving problems and accomplishing tasks more simple oevr the web.
There's something to be said for innovating a solution to ineffeciencies in a market or in software and for many of these sites, that's the driving goal. The AJAX, design, RSS, APIs, etc. are all just tools. - bfioca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How do you know these companies don't have business plans? Have you spoken with their CEOs? I have huge doubts that any self respecting VC would hand out money to just any old company these days, especially after what happened 5 years ago. Sure there are some exceptions, but I don't think Web 2.0 is as foolish an idea as you think it is.
- randfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Qualifications for being "Web 2.0":
- User generated and/or user influenced content
- Applications that use the Web (versus the desktop) as a platform, in innovative ways
- Similar visual design and shared functional languages
- Leveraging of popular trends, including blogging, social tagging, wikis, and peer-to-peer sharing
- Inclusion of emerging web technologies like RSS, AJAX, APIs (and accompanying mashups), Ruby on Rails and others
- Open source or sharable/editable frameworks in the form of user-oriented "create your own" APIs
I think they fit at least 4 maybe 5 out of 6. - jpfinch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nah, Digg got ripped by Shoutwire plenty, but Newsvine is fundamentally different and serves a different purpose.
- cheesy_1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They're not saying craigslist is "Web 2.0", they're just saying the man who created craiglist, Craig Newmark, has written some articles and reviews.
craiglist is a great example of a good simple and easy to use "Web 1.0" site (or maybe "Web 1.5" if that exists ... I wouldn't be surprised)
Note the quotes, I find this whole web versioning system ridiculous. - ghelton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And if anyone sees the winners and submits an article saying hey, look at this new site, Im gonna flip.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its supprising that web 2.0 has reached 700 sites and they forgot pxn8 or whatever that counts as a mashup or it could count as Photos & Digital Images
- ghelton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally Hipcal gets the credit it deserves
- lenwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Get ready to flip then. Seems like this is the way lots of diggers operate.
- marshallk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Brilliant marketing move by the SEO company that did this. It's totally fun.
- fizzeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wouldn't it really be by eye...
- dareiff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1digg seems, to me at least, to have gotten slower in the page rendering, loading, etc., especially after the new features... It could definitely be refined, and I hope they do..
--But don't get me wrong! I love DIGG! - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh crap, Newsvine beat out digg for first place.
I think digg and newsvine are very different and can't be accurately compared.. I also think digg got ripped in their interface rating.. digg has a great interface. - gooru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First of all, I wouldn't consider Craigslist Web 2.0. Second of all, not only are there reviews by Craig Newmark, but Craigslist won 1st prize in the Classifieds & Business Directories category.
- mrblogadise, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2web 2.0 is donkey-ass marketing hype and a mini-dot-com bust.
- echo1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is so cool. i just spent so many hours just searching thru not even a small percentage of these sites. there's so much good stuff out there people don't know about.
- cheesy_1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I like the some of the design principles and whatnot of the whole Web 2.0 trend, but I agree.
At what point are people going to realize this whole Web 2.0 / non-Web 2.0 thing is ridiculous?
I'd say MOST popular new sites these days have at least some Web 2.0ish features because that's what's trendy right now in terms of web design. How long are we going to continue to cataloging every new site with an AJAXified feature and rounded corners? - succubuskiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree with a bunch of the comments above that Web 2.0 is WAY over rated. I feel sorry for the companies shelling out money for companies that provide a nice Web 2.0 design/technology but NO BUSINESS PLAN. When the hell do you start a company seeking funding without a business plan? The ideas and principles are good, but Web 2.0 / AJAX is not the long term solution to having "web" applications.
- DuckFOO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope so. I find the whole "Web 2.0" thing as attractive as "The Information Superhighway."
- tony23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Seems to me like they missed a number of serious contenders, especially in the collaboration category.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If craigslist.org is web2.0, then I guess every forum found on the web is also web2.0? Blech, I don't think so, craigslist is totally old school, everything about it is against web2.0. It appears that it was included on the list because it's popular.
- echo1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks for your work, this is amazing stuff.
- tpizz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Negative digg this comment all you want but I feel a need to point out that web 2.0 is still the Internet. It's a fancy name for an innovative way of designing web sites.
- Rob5246, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still can't figure out what Web 2.0 is. Maybe I'm just dumb. Can someone help me out here?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://web2.0awards.org.nyud.net:8080/
- miaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is basically the kind of thing I am looking for. Someone making up filtered lists of useful kosher sites. Social bookmarking and Digg is all very well, but I want good quality lists and links rather than whats dugg or popular. Popularity isn't the same as relevance.
Im sure this is available already, but I want to see the public bookmarks of someone whose opinion I respect on a site, rather than the links being a massive pool of popular links or a random persons link. I would like both options, in fact.
I would also like the option of rating people on a private scale, so that I can easily follow opinions I respect and miss others. I would like that along with the current rating system, since the current system will likely have an affect on posters behaviour. - katfive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd suggest reading the "zeitgeist" on the awards. Even if that doesn't provide a clear definition, check out the articles (particularly O'Reilly's) and I think that will help.
- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Newsvine beats digg.com! Woohoo, we rule...
- cheesy_1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1nevermind, how do i delete comments?
- JWood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I don't buy that. Digg should definitely be number one. But then, I don't really agree with most of the winners. Very nicely categorized, though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0haha.. yes. you are right!... :)
- nene7070, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1dugg to death.
Coralized: http://web2.0awards.org.nyud.net:8090/ - aantix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4No one ever includes a health, fitness or exercise category. Here is my site: http://www.RunFatBoy.net
