Origami
"For Those With Deep Pockets."
Works on both literal and figurative levels. - settsu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Origami
"For Well-Dressed Trust-Fund Babies" - TheProfessional, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It also appears to be a small graphics tablet and a sega gamegear.
It will also magically tie all of our daily electronics together. Assuming we can afford a cell phone with what I am assuming is bluetooth we can send crappy low res camera phone pictures to origami to email to our moms and girlfriends. We will also be able to use it as a giant remote to control our Windows Media Center Edition based HTPCs. My mom can also design the next hip threadless.com tshirt on it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Its funny.. I think if this product had Apples name on it and was called Ipod Video everyone would be praising it and wouldn't care how much it cost.
- n8han, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The video's interesting, as an example of how marketing types envision "artsy" people. I like the mustached sketch the guy does in 5 seconds on the smooth plastic screen of an unfamiliar device.
Those artsy people, they're so cute and they can do anything! One second, they're plugging in cool looking synths, the next it's full-on Picasso. - dancinbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.origamiproject.com/1/
Now how's that for weird? - sakibomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4what happened after the photographer wrote "pwnt this" on his photo? it's so hard to watch these things when my eyes involuntarily roll back into my head.
- cblalock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4good lord. its fecking huge.
- rasty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Woot! A cross between a Newton and a Lynx!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Microsoft has strayed from their time tested formula.
1 Let Apple invent it
2 Make a crappy version
3 Profit ! - cainrok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Microsoft Origami- For the youths that can afford their own Tour Bus."
- jnmlmz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Good...yes....Savior when Apple releases it's version
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"After watching the video, I would say that origami is a social network. The device itself doesn't seem to be the point, unless it is a hub."
Agreed, it appears to be more about collaboration than anything else. - bradspry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4After watching the video, I would say that origami is a social network. The device itself doesn't seem to be the point, unless it is a hub.
- roder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3that thing is enormous.. who the hell is going to buy one
- andreo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow! Another device for people to spend thousands of hours on trying to get Linux to run on it.
But I think it's pretty cool. From what I've read they are supposed to be $500 or less, run a full version of Windows, and some other crap that I can't think of right now. - blacksh33p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You people are all suckers. Apple and MS have been in cahoots for years. They let it slip with this promo by having the Mini in there. Their rivalry is a sham. It's been a clever marketing ploy that has driven both companies to the top of the technology food chain, at least in America, but more so other areas of the world. They play off each other better then any famed musical duo and constantly rake in your cash.
Now if I only had proof...
(think if this were true...wow...just...wow.) - DanElHombre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wont be interested in it's capabilities until I see the price tag.
- mdon77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Its the Microsoft ETCH-A-SKETCH !
LOL
They should keep it Red for Nostalgia! - dotnetwebdev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"two of my friends have already stolen PSPs from a few dumbasses who were stupid enough to pull them out in public"
you're a bigger idiot than your friends. - maverick999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I'll have to see more detail to buy into something like this. It looks like a bunch of marketing hype so far...
- diggerman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm not impressed. At least I can actually put my PDA in my pocket and if I want something larger I use my ultraportable laptop.
- JJP0223, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Stop the clip at around 14 seconds, it is when she is turning on the instruments, and you can see a fuzzy apple logo which appears to be on a Mac Mini
- CrazyYossarian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I will play the devils advocate.
I think it has some potential.
Did anyone else notice that the word "Free" was shown on the screen a couple of times? - fatlip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this thing looks crappy =/
but then again, if you think about it.. oragami is just a crappy/cheap version of something cool; like a duck, a kitty, or a wasp - AstroPHX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Let me know when the product is different than anything on http://www.ultranote.com
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I like this thing, it would be useful for general note taking and as a gps/media combo. I would use it for notes and general organization mostly. If it's cheap i'll own one.
P.S. some people have deep "issues" involving Apple and M$ apparently, seek help, theyre companies not countries. - BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jeez, you guys are hard to please.
My company already uses something like this when we are trying to commission equipment. 10" Win2K, wireless link with our main control system (basically allowing us to be in 2 places at once), it allows us to commission instruments and is a fully fledged PC so I can modify databases on the go.
I for one would buy this. Half the time I lug my 17" lappy around with me so this would be a JOY to carry around, even in that "Filofax" leather sleeve that dude had.
And yes, I have a tablet at home, a 14" widescreen Gateway CTX200 convertible, great little machine, my daughter plays on Noggin.com for hours, better than the "TV babysitter". For all those people that grind on tablets, have you ever tried one? Do you have any idea how useful they can be?
No I didn't think so. - Mediaright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool, but it's an ad basicaly. And as we all know, ads are misleading. This can't be that easy to use. I hope Apple does one soon though, cause that WILL BE THE REAL DEAL! Until then, looks cool if they can pull it off. Until then, VAPORWARE!
- razicop, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1that's great news, many thanks!
- mikesum32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1from a microsoft doc on the website
National Semiconductor's final concept, called the Geode Origami Mobile Communicator was unveiled at Comdex in November 2001. The device is a fully functional, proof-of-concept prototype that is expected to attract interest from OEMs, who will partner with National Semiconductor and move the product from design to production.
The Origami device is approximately 7 ½ inches x 3 1/2 inches x 1 1/2 inches thick and uses:
• Extensive multimedia features in Windows XP Embedded to support its customized video record and snapshot application and to provide video-conferencing capabilities
• Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 to provide the latest Web browsing capabilities including playback support for Flash and Shockwave files
• Outlook® Express for e-mail
Matson is expecting the footprint for the operating system, browser, and mail client to be about 64 MB. Of the first 20 prototype devices, half featured a 256-MB Flash memory card and the other half featured an IBM 1-GB microdrive. The latter configuration is designed for devices that will be used more extensively as camcorders so there is maximum disk space for saving video files.
At first glance, the device looks like a small camera and camcorder until you open it to reveal a brilliant 4-inch, 640 x 480 display that looks more like a terminal. "That's why we call the device Origami; it changes shape depending on what function you're using," Matson notes. "You twist it one way to use it as a personal access device, another way to write an e-mail, and other way to use it as a camera." A patent-pending hinge on the unit allows users to bend the device into different shapes. - MindTrigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys are idiots.
It may be bigger than an iPod, but it also handled countless more operations than a video/audio player. I have travel all over the world. I also like to camp, hike, ride quads, and otherwise "adventure". At home I have wifi like most of you probably do....
I own ipod (3 actually), a Dell PDA (Axim X50v), a couple regular PCs and a laptop. Oh, and my phone is a Blackberry. There are times when none-of-the-above are convenient. My PDA's screen is simply too small, and it's limited in power. Somtimes my laptop is just too big. Ipod? well for playing music (NOT VIDEO) it's perfect, but that's all it does.
I would LOVE to have a little machine that is in between sized, acts like a tablet, has good power, and is smaller. Origami is an "in between" machine. Not too big, not too small. You anti-microsoft dorks just want something to bitch about. There is nothing wrong with the Origami concept. I've been waiting for a machine like this.
And stop comparing it to the iPod, you friggin' fanbois.
And yes it is UGLY. lol. - cdman98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It’s targeted at a niche market because this is reminiscent of the Tablet PC which never flew very high. Some would say Origami it’s more PDA, and even PDA’s are dying out slowly because of cell phones, multi function devices and cheep and powerful laptops. This brings us to Origami
Well this is MS solution for "everything" Gaming, Music, eBook, PDA, Media Center, Windows (Origami/Vista).
If this thing had Bluetooth and we had city wide WIFI we all could use VOIP on this thing instead of cell phones as well.
Lots of nice functions but the price has to be in the $400 - $600 range between PDAs and cheap laptops. If not then it’s just an overpriced novelty. It has to deliver basic graphics power but if it can run Halo or basic DX9 games than it would be a worthy gaming device (more silicon higher price). It would make a decent eBook reader because of the size. The rest speaks for it self.
Defiantly a great idea as long as they kill the Tablet PC market, plan to integrate Windows Mobile in more Phones instead of PDAs and price the device right.
Would I buy this thing???
Not really. A light and thin laptop would be just fine for what I do. Like when I got my PDA 2 years ago. I liked the functionality of my PDA but wished I paid for a laptop because you eventually desire the full functionality.
-Paul - dredd15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Toting around that thing would feel like packing up your old school Nintendo and hauling it with you. I certainly hope this video is from like, 1988.
But seriously, that think is as thick as a textbook.
It freaks me out. - DrEbola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+170% of digg users think they know better than the people that make up Microsoft.
- enjayenel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been waiting years for a portable digital mustache drawing tablet. I'm going to play that trick on my friends every time I see them with this thing!
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's too big to fit in a pocket, and if I'm gonna carry a device in a bag then I'll take my laptop which is more powerful. What niche is this supposed to fill?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1looks like their old Mira(sp) concept
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What does this do that a small laptop doesn't?
- lostngone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Comment about the video...
Why wear a motorcycle helmet if your not going to use the strap?!?! You might as well just a good set of glasses, it would give you the same amount of protection in a crash. ZERO!
Come on! I guess this says allot about the people that use Microsoft products. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"OMG!!! did anyone realise that when she is at the 'desk' with the two monitors that it is running OS X. you can tell because garageband was running in the bg!!!"
OMG!!! can u believe that microsoft also makes software for windows machines AND FOR MACS??!! LOLOLO!
Seriously though, as someone already mentioned on this thread, "origami" is more about the network, or the communication between devices and services; the brick-tablet thing is just one of the major (and obviously the first) components.
The whole thing is just kind of silly... seeing models use that technology for those fantasy scenarios when in reality, the vast majority of users are fat or unhealthily skinny nerds doing stuff like illegally stealing wifi from unprotected networks, browsing for porn, pirating software, illgaly downloading music, searching for keygens, cracks, while eating cheetos and/or doritos and drinking too much soda ;p - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's see here...
Ugly? Check.
Bulky? Check.
Dopey default 20-somethings doing mysterious yet artsy things? Check.
Leaving the viewer feeling like they know no more after watching than before? Check.
I need to get a lobotomy and open an ad agency, I could get rich off of suckers like Microsoft. The turd I flushed this morning could have created a better logo than the Origami one.
As an aside, I get more accomplished with my Sidekick2 than I do with my laptop. 4 email accounts + unlimited data + ssh terminal, what else do you need? - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apparently, the device warps time in some manner, or another. How in the world did it happen that these things happened in this order, only to be disordered.
Microsoft invented a time machine. - sabit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A Big ASS PDA?! What's new about it?
- TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BTW - Notice the www.talkoux.com URL in the presentation? Someone (not MS) snagged it via Go Daddy yesterday :D ... MS are normally a lot more careful about that sort of thing (owning domains they have in promo pieces).
- seattle98104, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1btw. i like how small it is.
- maxrcul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah right . . . now how many of you are gonna carry a man bag for your origami?
- dr_negative, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For people who sit around and do nothing all day, they sure can afford expensive toys.
- tsukiyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Am i the only one that hears the "fan" screaming "Origami!" in We Love Katamari whenever I read that word now?
Origami! Origami! Origami! - I8PP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's going to be popular because most nerds seem to hate it.
