- Cybermaul, on 08/04/2008, -10/+50WTF, 150 diggs and front page already? Oh, wait, it's MrBabyMan.
Kevin, please fix digg. Really, the site needs the help badly. - repick3, on 08/04/2008, -6/+26Google is going to be like that alcoholic uncle you have, he's going to be around till his liver fails or he off's himself.
- BXRWXR, on 08/04/2008, -3/+18I think Google is pretty firmly entrenched at this point.
- CindyMindy, on 08/04/2008, -4/+14Watch out! He'll fake not coming to Digg again!
- MaxterICC, on 08/04/2008, -1/+8yep....this is definitely news.
- Daniel591992, on 08/04/2008, -0/+6It used to be 30 diggs and front page (not a long time ago). Now, with the amount of spam shouts being sent around, it takes 150+.
- Aeuta, on 08/04/2008, -1/+7I think Wikia Search has a chance since it is unique in that it can't "really" be bought by the major players. It still needs more refinement but oneday I hope it stands a chance...
- Ultra99, on 08/04/2008, -1/+7Algorithm schmalgorithm....Google will stay on top until something new and massively different comes along which utterly disrupts the current "type-click" search paradigm. Google clones with fancier algorithms won't do it. Something with a much more advanced search filtering capability might...
- mazza558, on 08/04/2008, -0/+5I reckon Google will last as long as there's no quicker, more intelligent and more pervasive internet search solution. If none comes along, it'll last as long as people want to search the internet. This is all, of course, as long as they innovate and don't go mad with power / get into trouble with governments.
- cloudcity, on 08/04/2008, -0/+4Google == evil?
- radiofrequency, on 08/04/2008, -1/+5Google's superiority in ranking search results is obvious today but the biggest barrier to developing better ranking algorithms isn't intellectual. The sheer volume of sites and the infrastructure necessary to index the entire web is the real challenge even to competitors like Yahoo! and MSN.
Computers are getting faster at a rate that exceeds the growth of searchable web content. Years from now, computers will be powerful enough to make it possible for a relatively small server array to index the entire web. The googleplex with its tens of thousands of servers will be obsolete. Indeed, Google is becoming obsolete faster than it is growing in utility. - inactive, on 08/04/2008, -9/+13Can MrBabyMan take a day off? Not anytime soon.
- tenio, on 08/04/2008, -0/+4"/sarcasm" ?
- Br3ach, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3If Cuil is any indication of Google's competition....
- IxGLSxI, on 08/04/2008, -4/+7What is wrong with you people? It's an intelligent tech article with a correct title and description. Find something better to complain about.
- yawaramin, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2So you're saying Google will only be bested by something better than itself? Genius!
- jorichter, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2Honestly, in this case I didn't think "/sarcasm" was needed... It was just too obvious.
- vogelshock, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2Rick Romero, on the scene!
- sexybobo, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2Firefox bases their default search off of what most users use in that Localized Version google is not the default all over the world.
- rayraym0fucka, on 08/04/2008, -1/+3someone's pissed their stories never hit front page ;p
- abajaj2280, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2Powerset sucks.
Go Google! - DalekKiller, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1well tryed cuil a few times and in all cases was not able to find what I was looking for, they need to work on it.
- NexusV2, on 08/04/2008, -7/+8I don't see you guys making any good submissions to Digg. MrBabyMans articles are always a good read. I don't see why people need to always make the stupid comments such as "Oh no it's MrBabyMan" again or share their immature views on people.
- santaliqueur, on 08/04/2008, -2/+3Yikes, tons of unnecessary aggression. Can't you go beat your kids again?
- Scaryclouds, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1Nobody is forcing these companies to sell out. Obviously it is hard to turn down a seven plus digit offer, but still that is their (the start up) decision to take the offer.
- tumbler360, on 08/04/2008, -1/+2"The answer is "no" and the reason is simple: if a search service is good enough to make significant headway, deep-pocketed Google or Microsoft will acquire it before it even has a chance to hit the mainstream."
This practice is common across all industries and it's the way big companies maintain their monopoly like control. When you are an industry leader like Google, Microsoft, At&t, Exxon Mobil, etc, you should not be able to acquire competing business's. Only exception would be companies in bankruptcy.
Without rules like this there can be no competitive market because big companies can just exploit their financial advantages in order to make sure there is no competition. - vogelshock, on 08/04/2008, -3/+4Google's market plan is to capture all data ever created, and then sell it to corporate america.
"Don't be evil" is a clever way of rebuffing people like Wiini and I who warn google is evil from the get go. - jewelswoolf, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1Regarding Cuil: The layout is pretty cool, but the sites I'm pulling up aren't all relevant to my search terms -- some are even junk compared to what Google gives me for the same term(s). Cuil also keeps offering up images to go with sites in the search results, and the images have nothing to do with either the topic or the sites. ? Strange.
Looks like there are lots of bugs to still work out. Nice to see these guys are trying. (Still need to give Mahalo a shot.) - mrmudgeon, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1Wikipedia & other context based sites are Google's biggest competition now. I use Wikipedia for many things I would done on Googs last year.
- NexusV2, on 08/04/2008, -1/+2If you read my comment upwards to this one, you will notice that these are the comments I am referring to as "immature".
- Armon339, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1As long as they keep out-doing everyone they will not be bested. Not saying I LIKE Microsoft, but look how long they have been on top.
- kyleandstan, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1Has anyone considered the possibility that google is actually behind the 33million$ Cuil fiasco? What better way to boost the stock market's confidence than to show that a new contender with plenty of VC is sooo far off base when compared to Google? I say Google itself is behind this brilliant move.
- Samg85, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1Also "Google it" sounds better than "go search for it in yahoo".
- miaow, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1i think google could easily be outflanked. by an engine that searches better and maybe with some preferable layout. although they would likely alter too, or buy them up
- erossmu, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1"yahoo it," google sounded like a really stupid name when I first started seeing it in the classrooms. I always used av.com before google became insanely popular. "av it"... they all sound stupid until it becomes the norm.
- inactive, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1dont forget yahoo used have ove 55% of the traffic. anybody can fall.
- Gunite, on 08/04/2008, -1/+1Google (and most engines) search results are dominated by corporations. Search results are not nearly as relevant as they should be.
- WardOnTheWeb, on 08/04/2008, -0/+0This sheds light on the new business model for search start-ups. Have some small, innovative feature or just be popular enough that you get bought out by one of the big three. Now that I think about it, that's probably Cuil's objective.
- jsavage58, on 08/04/2008, -1/+1Beware the CUIL. They have it locked in and are going to catch Google any minute now.
- quomen, on 08/04/2008, -1/+1Google always is going through beta testing.
:P - batmanz, on 08/04/2008, -4/+4I'm going to get down for this...I think that Live search actually has higher accuracy for searches. And the image search works great...however, it is not as refined, and does not yet have as many components as the Google does.
- origclubsoda, on 08/04/2008, -1/+1The problem is not Google's algorithm, it's their mind share and partnerships. You would have to get either IE or Firefox to accept the newcomer as it partner and default search.
- Wiini, on 08/04/2008, -2/+2Your damn straight. Wonderful way of putting it.
Even if they don't plan on selling it, they have it. As long as they have it, they'll be vulnerable to hackers, governments, subpoenas, warrants and on and on.
Thanks vogelshock. - tao52nyc, on 08/04/2008, -1/+1Google is Steve Ballmer's nemesis - it's the one thing that's bigger than he is, something he'll never attain. That's why he's so obsessed with dumping billions of MSFT's money in vain attempts to beat them.
- ozziek, on 08/04/2008, -1/+1This is a load of Ars
- ashkan101, on 08/04/2008, -3/+2Yes, the consistently fastest growing company in history ever since it's conception is going to get bested.
- Wiini, on 08/04/2008, -7/+6Google = evil.
- chanop, on 08/04/2008, -2/+1There are former software engineers from google that have created www.cuil.com that is suppose to index searches faster. I checked it out and wasn't impressed though.
- naterpoke, on 08/04/2008, -2/+1plz fix*
- iamthearm, on 08/04/2008, -1/+0Wow. People, things like this don't happen over night. It's only been a little over a week since this was out in the news. Give it a chance. jeeeezzzzz....
