- tribalsun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13This is HUGE, finally I can be as overbearing and obnoxious as FF fan-boys! :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)~
- worbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Opera has been around for ten years, Intensecure... This is possible because of new partners and deals leading to more hard cash. This will lead to more money in the bank for Opera, not the other way around.
johnxstone: Opera is light-weight compared to the other ones... It's a far smaller download than Firefox, that's for sure. How can you not call Opera light-weight compared to Firefox? - elusive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"I can't believe you just said light-weight and Opera in the same sentence..."
you did, too. - moogleman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Never expected this. I've used Opera for many years, and this just makes it that much more accessible to other people. I think Firefox is great, but in my opinion it's really no match to Opera.
Oooooh, and a new major release! Nice. - Wolfman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I really do love Opera ever since that 24 hours of free keys stunt they pulled, it's the only thing I've used, and Im a heavy surfer (14-16 hours/day), What a great sight it is to see that they've finally gone entirely free(ofcourse you can still buy 'premium support').
- joenp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Cheer up, people! Today is a day to celebrate :)
- Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4***** A! This is great! Even more users = even more competition of Firefox and IE = even better browsers all around! :D
- INFINITETIME, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I use Opera to check website compatibility when I design websites. It does seem faster that Firefox. Like a dork, I missed the registration code giveaway. So, this is a pretty good deal. You can't beat free, right.
- nomore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like Opera. It seemss faster, sleeker, and a lot more light-weight than Firefox... but I'll just stick with Safari for now.
- TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Finally the Porche of web browsers with the capabilities of a Humvee is avaialble for less than the price of a Metro.
Meanwhile, the Civic driving Firefox users will continue to bolt on the roof racks, bike rack, and add in the underglow neon ... then wonder why they keep crashing.
Leave IE for the Soccer Moms. - nicomen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you want a more lightweight browser than Opera you need to go to Ibrowse, Aweb, Voyager,Elinks/Lynx or maybe Dillo. They don't offer as many things as Opera though and run on far less platforms.
As for what's best between Firefox or Opera? I don't care as long as you use a browser that supports the standards and encourages others to use them.
I happen to like Opera, other people prefer Safari, Konqueror, Mozilla or Firefox, that's just fine, chill out dudes and dudettes ;) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Firefox users have no excuse now. :)
- Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Opera does a better job with the Acid2 test page.
http://www.webstandards.org/act/acid2/test.html - version30.x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This news will make me download their 8.5 version just about....now.
Also, this will force us to to seriously add Opera to our testing environment at the shop. - iamtheshow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"As for what's best between Firefox or Opera? I don't care as long as you use a browser that supports the standards and encourages others to use them."
well said. - awa64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Firefox is still a much better browser."
Howso? Opera is superior in just about every sense.
-Faster rendering engine.
-More features out of the box.
-Smaller footprint.
-Better handling of downloaded files.
-Better plugin handling (AFAIK)
-Superior bookmark system
-Infinitely more customizable without having to screw around with source code or install tons of unstable extentions. Hell, even WITH those, Opera's still just about as customizable.
-Best implementation of the HTML standards of any browser.
-Smaller download. It's tiny!
Features that I like that I don't see in Firefox OTB:
-"Author Mode." Site making your eyes bleed? You can make the pain stop AND get the content. Or, turn off images before you click that link your coworker sent you to, just in case it turns out to be GoatSE or something similarly evil.
-Easily-accessible "Zoom" feature.
-eMail client. (OK, so I use Thunderbird... it's still there, and not significantly different.)
-RSS reader.
-Integrated IRC client.
-SESSIONS. Sessions ROCK.
-Spellcheck.
And that's just off the TOP OF MY HEAD. - peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Firefox is now Opera's bitch.
- Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Suck to ppl who bought it...thats all i have to say"
No it doesn't. Those people should be happy that they had a part in making this day possible. - nugge7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"You can't beat free, right"
Yeah, Opera for free and some stocks would be pretty sweet. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1very nice user interface, seems faster than firefox on a slackware 10.1
thank you Mr. Opera - doug41, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Free Opera should level the playing field among standards compliant browsers. As a long time Opera user, I welcome this development. Another nail in the coffin of IE!!
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Firefox is facing a TOUGHER competition now that Opera has gone FREE.
- bloodclot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ive been using FIREFOX since it came out, and i thought i would have a go with OPERA, well i downloaded opera and i am hooked on it, it is SO FAST and much more lightweight then firefox, i have never thought in my life there would be anything greater then firefox, but i was wrong.
- red_rolla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is great news indeed!
- d3bruts1d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Gotta love Opera. Like many others, I've been using and promoting it for years. I didn't mind the banners, but I'm not about to complain that they are gone. :P I'll still continue to support my browser of choice.
Those who purchased Opera within the last 30-days are eligible for a full refund. Contact Opera Software for more information. - transgress, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that's cool. if they go open source... and figure out what's wrong with the ubuntu package... i'll use it. if they do the latter i'll at least try it.
- mattza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just used my free opera b-day registration number. Good for them.
- ilbarone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm using Opera since v.5 as my secondary Browser. (No, my primary Browser has never been IE). Without those Banners it looks good.
Finally these Norwegian guys and girls did the right thing!
I'll stick to the 8.10 Bittorrent Preview release for now... - Spacemanspif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great. I used to use opera, but switched to firefox because it was free. There are a lot of great things opera has that firefox doesn't, i found myself adding several extensions in order to maintain the same functionality. I think I may switch back again.
- valenciastudent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The Opera web browser really is great, and I consider it an addition to my browser lineup, not a replacement for Firefox. Opera gives me one more option before putting my tail in between my legs and having to use IE for certain web pages.
(Yes, I know that any web page that doesn't work in Firefox is to be considered "broken" but that doesn't change the fact that they exist). - RyanOC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My pron looks much better in Opera ;)
- Arve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1vertigoblue: There is no "pro" version: Everyone gets the same, free Opera.
People can, however, like with Firefox, buy premium support if they need it. - harryman100, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Opera was one of the few pieces of software that I was willing to pay for, and now that it's free it's awesome. IMO Opera is a lot faster than FF, and mouse gestures (particularly the ones where you hold down one mouse button and click the other, when going back/forwards) feel so much nicer than in FF, which is not surprising considering how long they've been in the browser.
If you haven't tried Opera out, what are you waiting for? I've been hooked since very 6.something - xaph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good move, but I wonder, why the sudden change to freeware? When Internet Explorer was the sole competitor I'm pretty sure they weren't afraid of losing out, but I guess now that FF's a major competitor they have something to be afraid of (and not just losses in market share).
Opera's a brilliant browser. I do hope that they will sustain themselves, even though Opera is now freeware. - nicomen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1vertigoblue:
bad luck about the reg keys ;)
Anyway, it's the full version now available without ads.
Previously you could pay to remove ads AND get premium support. Now you can pay to get premium support, but everyone gets a browser without ads for free.
There has never been a pro version as far as I know, the only difference was the ad banner. - NetCaptive, on 02/18/2009, -0/+1Been using Opera since version 2. I'd give two Diggs if i could. This is excellent news.
- piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is good!!
My pixel space is very, very important to me. The smaller toolbars are, the better. I didn't use Opera before because the toolbar was (with the adverts) about 70 pixels deeper than firefox, if I remember rightly.
Now I will see how Opera performs and maybe switch... - iamtheshow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i've been a long time firefox user, and i took the time to use opera for the first time, messing with it for about an hour. i'm not about to switch over, but i have to admit, opera has some great things going for it. for the size of the installer (3.6mb - firefox is currently 4.7mb), it sure has a lot of built-in goodies (i particularly like the trashcan and sidebar), not to mention looking pretty damn good.
the browser wars are sure to get interesting, and i'm sure all of us end users will benefit from it. - siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It might be too little to late for this great browser.
- cds879, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For ad removal in Opera use Ad Muncher...
http://www.digg.com/software/Ad_Muncher_-_best_ad_munching_app_out_there
I've had pretty good luck with this - FyberOptic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Come on, anyone still trying to use the open-source thing of Firefox to try and say that alone makes it better than Opera has prolly never even looked at the Firefox code themselves. There's nothing there that even the moderate developer can begin to comprehend without a lot of study. I'd bet it's more like 1% of all Firefox users have the skills required to take advantage of it being open-source in the first place.
You can't say it makes it more secure either, because Mozilla and Firefox have had more security vulnerabilities than Opera over the last few years combined. This includes before Firefox took off in popularity.
Anyway, this isn't any sort of bash on Firefox, but not using another browser based entirely on misconceptions doesn't make sense. - gookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Pretty good... But it doesn't support the Ctrl-Enter shortcut to add the .com"
- it does is automatically. You dont need to CTRL-ENTER like you do in firefox. Just put it DIGG on the address bar and it will try .com, .net, .org respectively or you can customize it on the options. It is way COOLER than your CTRL-ENTER. - peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If god made a web browser it would be Opera.
- krisse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*Opera doesn't even pass Acid 2:*
Neither do iExplorer or FireFox.. - Actually Opera handles the test way better thans any of those.
I changed my mind. Been using FireFox for a about a year now and I immediately felt for Opera's slick UI many discrete features and excellent customization abilities.
Will be using Opera from now on. - MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0'-Best implementation of the HTML standards of any browser.'
Opera doesn't even pass Acid 2:
http://www.webstandards.org/act/acid2/test.html#top - barretj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0freeware != free software
- piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm going to stick with firefox. Why?
Because I'm stubborn, I don't want to admit defeat, and I feel loyalty to firefox ;D - DanTheManPR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*****! Today is an AWSOME day!
