- webcure, on 11/28/2007, -1/+65This is exactly the information that should be available.
Give us more! - shanomaq, on 11/28/2007, -5/+54Link to the actual library: http://www.archive.org/details/millionbooks
- th3B3n, on 11/28/2007, -1/+36Let me know when all college textbooks are made freely available online.
- Rheic, on 11/28/2007, -1/+27Maybe it's associations or just because I'm not used to it but sitting down and reading a book just feels different (e.g more relaxing) to reading on a pc or laptop.
- DiTherBox, on 11/28/2007, -1/+26Of course, ulib.org site is down.
- chris1971, on 11/28/2007, -2/+27Excellent! This is essential for the future of the developing world.

Link to actual library FTA
http://www.ulib.org/ - astrotrain, on 11/28/2007, -0/+15This just in... The RIAA has now created a new group called the (** holds hand over mic ** "are you serious about this!?")..ahem... WIAA The Writers Industry Association of America for all unlicensed written material shared with all.
Be warned the WIAA will dressed as British Firemen, and arrive in firetrucks to confiscate your illegal reading material. - otaku22, on 11/28/2007, -1/+15As long as you don't want to read anything written after 1926.
- monain, on 11/28/2007, -0/+11Definitely a time for online book stores to re-think their strategies. However, I wish they gave a link for a couple of books on this pg itself to start with. What say?
- CryptiniteDemon, on 11/28/2007, -3/+13I love how the article has like 20 links to other libraries in it's advertising but doesn't actually make a link out of the library that the ***** story is about.
- voyvf, on 11/28/2007, -0/+10Definitely. For most books that I buy, I also find a copy for my notebook. While I do prefer dead tree format to lugging out the computer, one has to admit that it's a lot easier to carry a thousand books via a thumb drive or laptop than it is balancing a few bookshelves on one's shoulders. :D
I do, however, think it'd be nicer to read the ebooks on something about the size of an ipod touch (or some other equivalent - I'm not much of an Apple fan, myself)
Luckily, mobile computing just gets more and more advanced, so we should have more affordable, readable alternatives to paper soon enough. - MarkDykeman, on 11/28/2007, -11/+20Barnes and Noble and Borders are doomed; so is Amazon ;)
- AdonisEffect, on 11/28/2007, -0/+9I'm not really sure what you're referring to. The interface is awful, but I think you fail to realize the potential of a project like this. Keep your mouth shut, please.
- hokie47, on 11/28/2007, -0/+8Amazon is smart they are trying to be the Ipod for "books" with Kindle. Also, Amazon is so much more than just books, they have become a market place for retailers.
- johnnall, on 11/28/2007, -1/+8They can digitize 1.5 million books but the can't survive digg.
- andshewas, on 11/28/2007, -0/+7I agree with you. My eyes don't tire on a book nearly as much as they do staring at the monitor. I'd really like to see that reader thing from Sony, though. It's supposed to have technology that makes the screen look like paper. I wonder if it would have the same effect the monitor does, or be more book-like.
- arjung, on 11/28/2007, -0/+7damn you! i actually thought that was going to be a real site.
- Charlesbian, on 11/28/2007, -0/+7laptops are lighter than carrying around 1.5million books, just so ya know
- vanscott, on 11/28/2007, -0/+7You know a great alternative to buying books? Libraries.
- Pritchard, on 11/28/2007, -0/+7http://www.ulib.org/
- lalop, on 11/28/2007, -0/+6It's right there in the first paragraph "...are available through a single Web portal of the Universal Library (www.ulib.org), said Gloriana St. Clair..."
- slimkevi, on 11/28/2007, -1/+7Wait... Dumbledore is gay?!
- Neuralphreak, on 11/28/2007, -3/+9I can has knowledge?!
- Jorin, on 11/28/2007, -0/+5That sucks... This is a great idea for a project, but with the way copyright law is restricting knowledge this kind of thing won't get off the ground. People need to just start ignoring these ridiculous copyright restrictions and make knowledge free.
- thewump, on 11/28/2007, -2/+7The site is HORRIBLE.
- JanYpe, on 11/28/2007, -0/+5The spi..ehm.. INK must flow!
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -5/+9eBooks are good stuff.
Too many people complain about not actually having the book and having to sit at the computer to read, but in reality it's not much different.
I suppose the portability of it, but laptops have been out for, what, well over a decade now ;) - dmightx, on 09/21/2008, -0/+4Better than nothing and its a start.
- badave, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4I couldn't bring myself to read many books on the computer I'm afraid. It just weirds my eyes out after a while.
- jetblackz4, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4I am working indirectly with Google to keep this project going. They are using a sophisticated camera system to record books page by page. Originally they were shut down for legal reasons but when complete it will be an amazing catalog of books. It is nice to see your work actually making an impact.
- AdonisEffect, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4Three words.
Proof Of Concept. - mstoneburner, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3It does, but just about at the speed of the pitch drop experiment.
- KingBunny, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3omg they have "Design And Construction Of Large Panel Concrete Structures", just what I was looking for!
...actually I have no idea what that is.. but they have it. - Pritchard, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3Donate.
- Zoshchenko, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3Wonderfully ambitious project - except the site doesn't work.
- AdonisEffect, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3They give a link to the library itself...
"all of the books, which range from Mark Twain’s “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” to “The Analects of Confucius,” are available through a single Web portal of the Universal Library (www.ulib.org)" - wfbnadador, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3definitely needs a designer for that ulib.org. not that its critical, but sites like this make me feel like im still in the 90's
- CluelessTroll, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Old news, College/University Libraries have had similar access for YEARS!
Who would have thought? - slantyeyed, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2printers and trees of the world are shaking in their boots.
- funkyjunk3, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2ebooks are definitely going to be a coming wave. The current forms are still expensive, but I imagine they'll drop significantly in price the next 5 years or so. Personally I'd like the OPLC, as its a laptop/ebook reader in one, and its the same price as a dedicated ebook reader. And if you want to read by the pool/beach, you don't have to worry about water splashing on it either!
- GMorgan, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Because there are no perfectly adequate books that have been made freely available in that period.
The biggest problem with free books is not quality but discoverability. It can be hard to hunt them down. This might end that problem. - MaximusD, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Sony's new ereader contains "digital ink" -- a screen that isn't backlit so it reads just like a book without the eye fatigue.
- Sagara, on 11/28/2007, -1/+3Thanks! I was disappointed that they didn't include the link in the article!
- lintmonkey, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Let me know when hell freezes over.
- fefu, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2"A Book of Gardening for the Sub Tropics" from 1921. FOR FREE. I'm so excited I can hardly contain myself.
- MaximusD, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Could a universal, free library be hosted in a country that doesn't respect copyright laws and still be accessible by everyone? Maybe The Pirate Bay and other bit torrent sites could commandeer copies of these millions of books and just dl through torrents like we do with movies and music. Let's get creative and obfuscate these copyright laws and make the world a better, more educated place.
- worthone, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2That's why I much rather prefer paperbacks.
- AdonisEffect, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2I've been reading on my tablet. It's just like having a book in my lap, but I get a pleasant warming sensation from the fan.
- Firemeboy, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2This is great. Now when I'm looking for Ma Asar Taleemi Rahbari by Ismail Haqi Pasha, I'll know where to look.
