- Ryuuzaki, on 12/27/2007, -0/+47If you give a man a fire, he'll be warm for a few hours.
If you set him on fire, he'll be warm for the rest of his life. - AriaStar, on 12/26/2007, -5/+49Good for these kids for wanting better lives than their parents. Work and learn and you can achieve. I'm happy for the kids in this article.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 12/27/2007, -1/+38Interesting that "for every 100 laptops bought, they're buying 1 for spare parts. There is no tech support, the students and teachers have to do it themselves". That alone could give the country a new career path, look out Indian call centres, Peru is right behind you! :)
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -2/+36Wait till the kids learn how to download porn.
- Th3Wiiexpert, on 12/27/2007, -1/+24Next week's article: "XO Laptops Great For Porn" says 10 year old Peruvian kid.
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -1/+24You must have missed the comments. Idiots were saying "why not give them teh fewd! dey are teh starving". People with no concept of what the third world really is. There are plenty of places with decent running water and all utilities, just mass poverty and lack of education, which is the target of this program. I'm not trying to fight a strawman here, this is just a quick recap for anyone that missed the original debate.
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -1/+18If people still fall for that crap, i almost don't feel sorry for them. A year or so ago a computer illiterate friend of mine thought he won a foreign lottery, all he had to do was send $5k and they would send him one million dollars. He didn't even remembering entering this "lottery." I begged him for 2 weeks not to send it, showed him websites that identified this as a scam, but he borrowed the money and sent it anyways. He's still struggling to pay it back. Greed is stronger than logic it would seem.
- goerg, on 12/27/2007, -1/+16damn...wanted to be the first with the porn thing...
- detree, on 12/27/2007, -5/+15Good, all they need now is a stable internet connection and the Peruvian villagers will be able to get their news online instead of old media propaganda outlets like CNN. It's a win win situation.
- Cannon590A, on 12/27/2007, -0/+10I think this is great, these kids now have an awesome opportunity to learn about the world.
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -0/+8I contacted these folks to inform them that I have two children. Asked them where I can turn them in for my two laptops? One laptop per child... sounds like a good deal to me. Hell, I can always make more children...

-Five years and he'll have the RIAA knocking...Just like us in developed nations! - cyberpope, on 12/26/2007, -5/+11http://digg.com/linux_unix/OLPC_Laptop_project_enl ...
Not the exact same article, but generally similar. - tba2287, on 12/27/2007, -3/+9Tell him that he deserves a Darwin Award
- katyism, on 12/27/2007, -3/+9that's the joke, silly.
- Bootes, on 12/27/2007, -1/+7Tell your friend to watch the Futurama movie.
- xenuxenuts, on 12/27/2007, -0/+5But then at least the people in the call centers would actually know what they're doing, instead of just reading a script that's like a "choose your own adventure" book.
- mterzano, on 12/27/2007, -0/+5Having been born and raised in Peru and knowing the people and the country like the palm of my hand I am glad. Peru's main cities are extremely internet driven these days. Very hip for them. I just hope they have electricity to keep them running and that the terrorists fail to blow up power lines. A vast majority of these children in these villages don't have shoes, can't bathe every day, or for that matter don't eat proper meals. But heck we can get nourishment and feed on technology, can't we?
- kkkkk, on 12/27/2007, -1/+6They have a camera. They can even create them...
- fkr3, on 12/27/2007, -4/+9Actually it is the same AP article.
- quakerorts, on 12/26/2007, -9/+14Viva la revolucion!
- Bllasae, on 12/27/2007, -1/+5Yeah, I'll bet it's a hit. Who doesn't want a free laptop?
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -0/+4Huh?
- Frnnkdlxx, on 12/27/2007, -0/+4Tell your friend to watch out for an email i'm gonna shoot his way... Now, what's his address???!!!!!
- williebee, on 12/27/2007, -0/+4"after 20 years, I shut mine off"
What the *****, are you posting this from your toaster? - davidrools, on 12/27/2007, -0/+4Glad to see the OLPC program taking off and gaining momentum. I was a bit worried with all that Intel/ASUS fuss.
- macwac, on 12/27/2007, -1/+5Quite impressive!.. they say they will produce around 1.5 mill laptops by November = 1.5 mill new linux users.. now that is an impressive new audience for open source
- PabloIV, on 12/27/2007, -0/+4In theory laptops equal education which generally equals better jobs and higher wages. Also education in general tends to be more beneficial in the long run than a one time pay hike.
- spyd3rweb, on 12/27/2007, -9/+13Pervian spam in 3 ... 2 ... 1...
- fergl, on 12/27/2007, -0/+4Very important consideration. http://www.olpcnews.com/hardware/power_supply/olpc ...
But the OLPCs aren't going to the starving kids. They're going to kids that already live in a place well-developed enough to sustain a school. The starving kids must have eaten the school building or something, since they are not allowed to have anything that isn't food. - trogdoor, on 12/27/2007, -0/+4Considering that they look like children's toys and can be setup to disable themselves after a certain amount of time if stolen... No wait, the creators of the XO couldn't have possibly panned ahead for things like that, AngeloM3 is the first person to consider that possibility, damn idiots and their lack of understanding of how the world works if only they had listened to AngeloM3 on Digg...
- BossKey, on 12/27/2007, -0/+3The laptops may indeed bring them higher wages. Have you not read about how cell phones and networks have revolutionized rural farming in these countries? Guess you haven't. Anyway, when farmers have better communications to other farmers and to their market centers, they can determine a more appropriate, better, and often HIGHER price for their products than they used to when their only option was to believe the guy who walked into the village claiming to know the latest prices. With digital networks, they can verify market conditions and negotiate much more effectively.
This is why the unique networking abilities of the OLPC laptops are key.
So that a laptop does change their world. - appetite, on 12/27/2007, -0/+3Good. I donated to it and Valleywag tried to make me feel like an idiot.
- haywiremonkey, on 12/26/2007, -8/+11And to think I wasn't sure if giving them free specifically adapted laptops would go over well....
Proved me wrong! - cyberoidx, on 12/27/2007, -0/+3Teh interwebz also bringz free pr0n!
- cyberoidx, on 12/27/2007, -0/+3^ Late submission for most worthless comment of the year ^
- tba2287, on 12/27/2007, -0/+3Teh interwebs is a danger to many of these third world governments. Once people in these countries become more educated and aware of their rights, then they will demand more political and civil liberties
- directive0, on 12/27/2007, -1/+3Completely miss the point AND sound condescending and pretentious. NICE!
- blackjack75, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2But wouldn't that require admitting there's a problem?
- loconet, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2Here is a very very detailed report on the progress being made at that village from the project's wiki: http://digg.com/tech_news/One_Laptop_Per_Child_Pro ...
- Frnnkdlxx, on 12/27/2007, -1/+3With a big black dildo...
- Bllasae, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2Good point.
- kazamx, on 12/27/2007, -1/+3Maybe when they find out about how evil the American Government is, they will work that much harder to keep their Government away from the US model. I hear the China model is doing well just now.
- kazamx, on 12/27/2007, -1/+3LOL, you mean like in the US with their free speech cages, secret police monitoring, pro torture Government.
- HonoredMule, on 12/27/2007, -1/+3Well you're in luck, because the original submission is still only halfway down the front page RSS feed.
- HonoredMule, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2How terrible...

- navitatl, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I can't stand the thought of getting scammed by our Mexican friends down in Peru.
- trogdoor, on 12/27/2007, -1/+2If you give a man a fire he'll be warm for a few hours.
