- cybrguy, on 08/19/2008, -3/+86New event, Olympic torrenting! Who can seed a torrent of the Olympic games the fastest!
- obliviousfool, on 08/20/2008, -0/+68Torrenting itself is more popular than it was 4 years ago.
- Schmidtopolis, on 08/20/2008, -1/+57Maybe the IOC should offer an alternative. Why would it take them a year to put out their own DVD (if that is indeed their intent). They already made.. what? 1 Billion from NBC's exclusivity, maybe half that from CBC's exclusivity, God knows how much from BBC's exclusivity... not to mention other international broadcasts.
It's 2008. Start giving people what they want... RIGHT NOW. Don't sleep. - kjcdude, on 08/20/2008, -3/+54No one to blame but NBC. They could of made it a hell of alot easier to view content than they did.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -1/+51"The IOC claims to have contacted The Pirate Bay with a takedown request, but turned to the Minister when they got no response. The Pirate Bay denies this, and Pirate Bay co-founder Peter Sunde writes: “The phone hasn’t rung. And I guess their e-mail probably got caught in the Chinese firewall, since TPB is blocked there.”"
And they still didn't take it down! lolol.. - nielkie, on 08/20/2008, -3/+45I don't get how anyone can own rights to a global event such as the Olympics. It should be public domain.
- zyklon, on 08/20/2008, -0/+37Is the Olympic Committee smoking crack? If their opening ceremony is pirated, who cares? It means people actually APPRECIATE THE GAMES. All they're doing is looking for ratings. Instead of being just a collection of the world's best athletes, it's a ***** TV game show.
- tama00, on 08/20/2008, -2/+35how else are you supposed to watch it again then? Its not like they sell it on DVD..
- EllimistX, on 08/20/2008, -0/+32I find it sad that they are trying to keep an event meant to inspire the best in people and international cooperation from reaching the eyes of as many people as possible just because they don't make a profit from it. Goes to show what it's all about, huh?
I think even those people that think the "freedom of information/media" argument for piracy is ***** would agree here... - LeviTheSmith, on 08/20/2008, -1/+27http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4335972/Beijing.Ol ...
"Seeders: 2279 Leechers: 55"
Why I love TPB - Murdats, on 08/20/2008, -0/+25have you not heard of the pirate bay?
they never take it down, they have a page full of these requests and their smart ass replies. - AndrewDB, on 08/20/2008, -0/+25So... why don't they offer it for free, with a higher resolution and better quality than any of the downloads that are currently offered.
Problem solved with easy, common sense. - YancyFryJr, on 08/20/2008, -3/+22Requisite "***** THE RIAA!" and "Keep seeding!"
- DrLeePhD, on 08/20/2008, -0/+15I think this is contrary to the ideals that the Olympics stand for. Just wrong. The international exposure that the olympics garner should be open. Shouldn't just come from network TV.
Granted there are production costs etc, but the olympics support public interest and with the spirit of international cooperation OLYMPICS SHOULD NEVER BE COPYRIGHTED.
Beijing spent millions of dollars to put their name on the olympics and bring it to the world.
TV networks should spend millions to cover the olympics, Take credit for covering it, and offer it for free to download / own.
"Did you see that world record they broke last week? No, I missed it and the DVR didn't catch it. Sucks that the copyright won't run out in my lifetime." - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+14STOLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Japan has won the gold with a hundred and twenty five point seven megabytes.
Thats a game the US would loose thanks to corporate greed :/ - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+13And they won't.
- eclectro, on 08/20/2008, -1/+12Yes but that wouldn't give microsoft a way to shoehorn silverlight crap (and hence vista) onto the world.
- Zippo, on 08/20/2008, -0/+10Why would the IOC even care? Are they going to rebroadcast the opening ceremonies? Are they going to sell it on DVD anytime soon? I imagine a lot of broadcasters who aired the Olympics also broadcast over the air for free... CBC in Canada, for example... Therefore people could have seen it for free anyways.
People who recently missed it want to see it... not never see it or wait a year. - graemee, on 08/20/2008, -1/+7Yeah, but they're doped on FIOS.
They pee in the cup @ 100Mbps - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -2/+10BIg Thanks to the IOC for reminding me of BIT TORRENT..
Now I can watch all my faves from the police state olympics...
I am also glad the IOC didn't get in there first and produce high quality scenes with a little adverstising sanctioned under the good name of the IOC. Imaging DVD quality replays with nice revenue earning Mc Donalds adds. Oh well, such imagination never builds bridges.
oops...I said too much.. - thePTS, on 08/20/2008, -2/+10The opening was more or less awesome..
To put it in perspective, imagine the "human tetris" clips on youtube, but with 20 times more people who actually know what they are doing, and perform live with 1000 times bigger budget. That's what the first minutes of the opening sequence is like, and there's over an hour of awesome stuff like that. I expected something artsy and boring, but I was literally mouth wide open staring at what they were pulling off.
For those of my "buddies" who downloaded it, they said it was WELL worth the leech. - gcnaddict, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7***** the IOC?
- Myonosken, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7Uh, noone mentioned that anywhere in these comments.
Anyway, UK UK UK! - Ummagumma, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6You got the closest to the comment I was going to make, that is, why not take a global event that is intended to unite the world and desperately try to protect it from as many people as possible? Why not take an event meant to show the world the greatness of your organization and the country hosting your event and put a petty price tag on it?
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6And 12 million people have fallen for fake boobs, bad CGI, lib-syncing and prosthetic limbs. Welcome to the 21st century: special effects are AWESOME!
- evilcaptain, on 08/20/2008, -3/+9Brought to you by the same brains who thought that having the Olympics in an authoritarian state would be a good idea.
Morons. - JAWS, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6Right IOC, we believe you when you say it's for the glory of sport that you're doing this...especially after ass-hat statements like this.
- lithera, on 08/20/2008, -2/+8Information wants to be free.
Those dinosaurs at the IOC need to wake the ***** up and realise that people want and will view a global event like this when and how they wish to. Nothing they, or anyone, can do about it. - zionKing, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5I know a person who tried to watch the ceremonies on NBC's website who got the "this won't play on your Mac" message even though he had an intel-based mac. Then he downloaded the super high-resolution version from a torrent as a big "***** you" to NBC and MS for artificially filtering out users based on inane rivalries between themselves and Apple. My friend is grateful that he discovered the world of torrenting thanks to the NBC/MS alliance.
:) - theiss, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5amen. there's a reason why EVERYONE else uses flash video. or you could even go mpg, avi, even *cough* wmv... silverlight? seriously?
purposely uncapped for the grammar nazis. - skoles, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Agreed (with OP). I tried viewing the highlights everyone talks about but apparently NBC can only figure out how to stream video for PC's and Macs that ONLY use Intel CPU's.
How does every other streaming video service site manage? To boot, they go after the YouTube postings demanding takedowns. This is the ***** that PROMOTES PIRACY you ***** dolts. You lock out a certain segment for no reason at all through your own incompetence. - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Check out the one from Australia and the other from BBC... the main problem with the coverage is, here is this fantastic ceremony and we have to have announcers blab, blab, blabbing over it with their idiotic comments. NBC has lots of commercials... not sure about the other two... (yet)
- arcticblue, on 08/20/2008, -1/+5Too bad I rarely get decent speeds from TPB due to the fact that 90% of the people who use the site (pulled out of my ass) don't have their clients/routers set up right and aren't actually seeding. Or they have their upload speed set so low that it doesn't make any difference. I started this torrent 20 minutes ago and I'm getting 5k/sec. I'm on 100M fiber (Yay Japan) and I usually get over 1MB (yes BYTE)/sec on torrents from private trackers.
My upload speed is uncapped. I'll be sure to seed when I'm done.
Oh, and it's gone down to 3.7k/sec...I can only hope this picks up speed in a little bit. - aussieNickuss, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4Bloody British! How dare you pale skinned, couch potatoes overtake the Aussies on the medal tally!!
- AncientPC, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4Actually, they do sell it on DVD:
http://www.nbcdvd.com/
I'm not sure if that's the official site or not, but while watching the Olympics I saw NBC advertise for their DVD a few times already. - arcticblue, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3OK, so educate me. What exactly am I not understanding?
- golfingloser, on 08/20/2008, -2/+5There was a M.A.S.H marathon on the other station and I completely missed the openning ceremony!
I need to get on over to Pirate Bay... - Dermah, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3If you believed that both of those were real you deserve what you get.
- jguy584, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3I completely agree agree.
Silverlight, the ***** format that NBC went with, doesn't work on my computer and I don't want to be bothered trying to make it work. - OCPaul, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3Is there own fault. In the age of computers and instant news we get ***** like NBC delaying live events and then online using silverlight (bad for linux users). So yea who cares what they want because they dont care what we want.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3http://thepiratebay.org/legal.php
- saigumi, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3IOC and "common sense" in the same sentence.
The IOC doesn't talk that language. Money and bribery are the only two recognized words they know. - strevoir, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3dont try to make you look like a idiot
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3Usain Bolt just won 200M and beat Johnson's World Record. YaY!!
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3well during the event yes maybe
but after why
it's the best promo pr they have
being chosen as olympic host is an honor and totally works for you
the olympics are supposedly more about glory then $ or at least somewhat about glory
you already made a fortune
give some up as appreciation that you were chosen
have some class
it will impress people - blackfett, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3On a related note, how come when i search for "Usain Bolt 100m" in youtube or google all the videos are either deleted or none exist?
where am i meant to watch epic replays? - Elliuotatar, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2This surprises you? It's been a ***** tv game show for years. It goes back at least as far as when the Olympics comittee was granted a special trademark on the word Olympics and all variations thereof used for the purpouses of marketing any product.
- xatx3, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2We love tpb :)
- aquapete, on 08/20/2008, -1/+3it really was easier for me to find a good torrent than it was to find anywhere else.
- iggy2012, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2buried blocked reported
