- darthpreppy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The question I have is how much did they cost then?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so what happened?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I believe the domains were free. Sex.com recently went through a battle because the original owner didn't pay for it when domains were first offered and a company was trying to grab it from him.
- Gotar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hard to even believe that there was an internet in '85.
- roeboedog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0um a little scary but i worked for a company called THINK in SF 'round 87-89.

I dont know about that far back, but when I registered my first domain it was $200 for 2 years I think. It might have been that much per year, its been a long time. - MichaelLord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hah! I guess it no surprise that Microsoft wasn't on that list. Bill Gates, "Internet? What the hell is an inter-net?"
- mab0111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why would they need to update a list of the oldest companies on the internet?
- truk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually the sex.com battle was because it used to be easy to forge domain transfer requests, and someone transfered the domain from the legit owner to themselves, and it took several years to prove it prove the value of the loss.

The internet has been around since the 1960's, set up by the U.S. Defense dept. - prairieson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No Luke, I'm thinking 100 is just about the right size for the "100 Oldest Registered Domains" list, heheheh.
- PercyKittenz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Reaffirming the fact that all early internet pioneers were geeks!"
Well, what would you expect? - Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting to see who had foresight first. HP beat IBM to the punch on that one.
- OwlBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very interesting. I would have never guessed that domains were sold back in '85.
-Owl - thetonio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy crap, almost all the domains are acronyms.
Reaffirming the fact that all early internet pioneers were geeks! w00t! - sbasund, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol
- majik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0from what I understand, registering was free back in the days. it was not until waves of people started abusing the system by registering lots of domains to turn around and sell them that it was set up so that you had to pay to register a domain name. back then there was only one registrar (network solutions) and it charged an arm and a leg for registration. anybody got more history on this?
- prairieson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"never used lynx or pine, have you?"
Hah! Back in my day we used 'mail'...
in the driving snow...
uphill both ways.
heheheh. - c0dek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Reaffirming the fact that all early internet pioneers were geeks"
never used lynx or pine, have you? They weren't just geeks, they were hardcore nerds! - digit9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The internet, pre www, was a fun fun place. We used gopher a lot to go from system to system. If I recall correctly some of the gopher links would bring you right into a shell. It was a cool place. IMO it all went down hill the $h!tter once AOL started offering Internet access.
- bobetr, on 11/27/2008, -0/+0im surprised at where ibm is
- shanzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It was free back in the days. I paid $0 to register foobar.com back in '93.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^^ thanks professor
- hardcoredj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes, fintan, that's the point.
- fintan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's OLD
- Luke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would think the list would be much larger? I guess it shows very few companies believed in the home PCs.....
- gcfreak3001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Arpanet was created in 1969. In the 1980's, bulletin boards became very popular but costly since it was sometimes a long distance call. E-mail was around and so was hacking into government computers. I wish i had a chance to go on the net in the 80's and seen what it was like before grpahics and everything.
