- fixty, on 05/03/2009, -12/+480How dare Google not internalize the dynamic cultural neuroses of every society on earth before they do anything?
What's next - backlash over mirrors if your face isn't as pretty as you'd like?
(That's all the hyperbolic opprobrium I can muster at this hour.) - pe5t1lence, on 05/03/2009, -6/+357So let me get this straight. It is google's fault for Japanese businesses discriminating based on heritage?
- BBE1965, on 05/03/2009, -2/+351I was not aware Japan had an untouchable class. Learned something new.
- xero69, on 05/03/2009, -24/+328Considering how offensive some of their porn is I'm a little surprised at their reaction to this.
- Skankingmike, on 05/03/2009, -9/+236They also don't like to talk about the Nanking Massacre they perpetrated on the Chinese either. Or as they lovingly call it the Nanking Incident, you know that little incident where they slaughtered and raped thousands of people mostly innocent civilians.
- Kyan, on 05/03/2009, -3/+182Yeah, sounds like Japan's problem, not Google's.
- punkcat, on 05/03/2009, -1/+144funny how its google's fault for their prejudices.
- NickLee808, on 05/03/2009, -5/+145The same were done to medieval maps of old England, but you don't see descendants of peons running around calling "ye *****."
- guinpen, on 05/03/2009, -4/+130That's ***** up. I mean, I thought it was ***** up when businesses were discriminating in their hiring practices against people of certain skin color, or sexual orientation.. and, ***** up as that may be, it's an immediate perception you have of somebody. But to look into their family history hundreds of years, say, "well, sorry, but your ancestor was a leatherworker" and be turned away is just mind-bottling.
- jgzman, on 05/03/2009, -2/+124This really sounds like it's Japan's problem, not Google's problem.

At least nowadays, the Germans say it's illegal to deny the Holocaust. - gasoline, on 05/03/2009, -1/+99Looking from Europe, "more than 100 years" sounds funny. Churches' records of marriages, births and deaths usually go back to at least 17th century, even in rural areas. In towns and cities, records may go back to about 14-15th century.
- adventflux, on 05/03/2009, -8/+104At least they try to stay classy by blurring out the genitals.
- sotaroca, on 05/03/2009, -1/+90this article would be 1000 times more interesting with pics
- novenator, on 05/03/2009, -5/+93The old maps refresh the memory of the abolished caste system and the shunned 'buraku', who continue to feel discrimination today. The buraku still face prejudice, based almost entirely on where they live or their ancestors lived, which is shown on this google maps historical layer.
- icepick314, on 05/03/2009, -0/+81what's more ***** up is that family history can have significant roll in hiring of jobs in Japan...
man...i do wish more and more younger generation takes over the country...they're more open to new ideas instead of holding on to something that happened way back in the past... - inactive, on 05/03/2009, -1/+80I thought that was pretty obvious sarcasm.. 100 years for family records isn't a very long time..
- inactive, on 05/03/2009, -4/+81No, it's Google's fault for allowing non-Japanese to know that Japanese people were (and still are in many cases) hugely discriminatory.
- Pyrotic, on 05/03/2009, -2/+74Hiding this information is a rather poor way of fighting prejudice.
- inactive, on 05/03/2009, -5/+75Woah, in Japan, family records can date back more than 100 years. Simply astounding.
- devolver, on 05/03/2009, -0/+67Seems like their government would crack down on the discriminating hiring practices. That wouldn't float for a second here in the states, there would be lawsuits galore. It would almost pay to be the descendant of a grave digger or tanner...
- newtondave, on 05/03/2009, -0/+65Denying history doesn't make it go away, no matter the country.
- gasoline, on 05/03/2009, -19/+82What a ***** up society D :
- Taedirk, on 05/03/2009, -2/+61So they're pissed that Google posted the maps, then they're pissed that Google removed the maps. Make up your damn mind.
- Robbothehood, on 05/03/2009, -3/+56mind-bottling?
- slippeh, on 05/03/2009, -5/+57It is Google's fault for providing Japanese businesses with the tool to more easily discriminate based on heritage, is what I got from the article.
- rsHoratio, on 05/03/2009, -1/+49"One of the most notorious cases of human experimentation occurred in Japan itself. At least nine out of 12 crew members survived the crash of a U.S. Army Air Forces B-29 bomber on Kyūshū, on May 5, 1945. (This plane was Lt. Marvin Watkins' crew of the 29th Bomb Group of the 6th Bomb Squadron.[28]). The bomber's commander was sent to Tokyo for interrogation, while the other survivors were taken to the anatomy department of Kyushu University, at Fukuoka, where they were subjected to vivisection or killed."
Holy *****... Thats pretty horrid and unimaginably evil. - newman8r, on 05/03/2009, -1/+47totally uncool of Japan.... I don't even get why a company wouldn't want to hire these people, and that they'd actually expend resources to check backgrounds for it.
- rancor01, on 05/03/2009, -1/+47>>Seems like their government would crack down on the discriminating hiring practices.
HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA<breath>HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH!!
Youve never been to Japan, have you?
Only last year did the government stop letting vending machines sell cigarettes to 10 year olds.
Hell - I cant tell you how many apartments I got turned down for because "We dont allow pets or foreigners"
I've even gotten a few jobs in my years over other foreigners because I was later told "we dont like black people", or "We trust Americans more than Indians", or even "We liked that you had blue eyes, and not brown". This is a weird, bizarre, strange, and totally ***** country.. But I love it, because with a few exceptions, it usually works out in my favor.
If you've ever wanted to know the true meaning of "laissez faire", come out east for a bit. - rpgmakr, on 05/03/2009, -2/+47So, even if in a society everybody looks the same people will find a way to discriminate certain group.
FTA: "But they still face prejudice, based almost entirely on where they live or their ancestors lived. Moving is little help, because employers or parents of potential spouses can hire agencies to check for buraku ancestry through Japan's elaborate family records, which can span back over a hundred years."
*****. - Mship, on 05/03/2009, -2/+47According to the article it does more than refresh their memories, its say that some company still practices 'buraku' in its hiring today. I think they fear that if this knowledge is more public then what it already is that more companies with follow in that practice.
- NickLee808, on 05/03/2009, -2/+43China does the same thing. Some even go near thousands.
- archiesteel, on 05/03/2009, -8/+49That's Japan for you.
- inactive, on 05/03/2009, -8/+48the Japanese are so racist they make old Mississippi rednecks look progressive and tolerant
- archiesteel, on 05/03/2009, -1/+39That's completely irrelevant. You should really RTFA before posting such comments.
- cave, on 05/03/2009, -4/+40It's a different culture. Discrimination happens because of fear. The Japanese fear these people are cursed. The only way to fix this (as with any other kind of discrimination) is with education, not censorship of information.
- inactive, on 05/03/2009, -3/+38Yeah. It's actually pretty surprising to a lot of Americans that most of the world is super racist/discriminatory, in many instances far beyond anything people in the US can imagine. I think that's why Google got burned on this one. There is some sort of big disconnect in the realization that racism is alive an well all over the world, not just the American south.
- flynnfx, on 05/03/2009, -3/+37If you think the 'bura' and 'eta' are racist, you should see the open policy Japanese society has towards Caucasians. There are open signs on many shops saying 'No Foreigners' or 'No Whites' or "Foreigners only with a Japanese Friend' even today.
Check this out :
Video of "Japanese Only" signs in Japan
http://www.boingboing.net/2008/04/07/video-of-japa ... - bieber, on 05/03/2009, -0/+33So this is only a problem since the map has been publicly linked to satellite imagery? What, they weren't capable of figuring out where locations on a map were before?
- Kadayi, on 05/03/2009, -0/+33I think the bigger problem is this totally wacked whole back tracing thing rather than what Google are upto. I mean seriously you're not going to give me a job because my great grandfather might have worked leather for a living? That's so outrageously medieval an attitude its beyond belief that it's still prevalent in what would claim to be a modern country....
- smashingmonkey, on 05/04/2009, -0/+32Let's see... resume looks great... you're very well qualified... glowing recommendations... we've found you to be most impressive and I think I can safely say you're hire... oh boy wait a sec... says here your great-great-grandfather worked with leather. Sorry but we don't hire scum, so get the ***** out.
- mksmothers, on 05/03/2009, -5/+36The Japanese are the most polite and most racist population in the world.
- sleepwalkers, on 05/03/2009, -0/+30Yeah, y'know, what happens when your thoughts get all trapped up, like in a bottle.
- 0zzy, on 05/03/2009, -9/+38Japanese porn is depressing.
- ggnictee, on 05/03/2009, -0/+29I like the mirror metaphor. It does sound like people are getting mad at google holding up a mirror. Why not use this as an opportunity to publicly point out past wrongs and how misplaced they are in current society? Worked for Germany.
- kingmanic, on 05/03/2009, -0/+29This is more a case of the Japanese people failing at equality rather than Google being racist.
- pr0t3st, on 05/03/2009, -2/+29There was an episode of "House" where someone had asked House why he became a doctor. He then told a story of growing up on a military base in ....well, somewhere in Asia. In a hospital there was a man dying from a rare sickness and none of the Chinese, Japanese or American doctors could heal him. The janitor of said hospital was an "Untouchable" and was always shunned and ignored but all of the other doctors knew he practiced medicine. They needed his help and his knowledge. The janitor agreed to help and healed the man of his sickness. In doing so the Janitor was in a place of power over everyone else that was in this building. He was no longer shunned because of his status temporarily. This was House's inspiration.....Great Episode!
- inactive, on 05/03/2009, -1/+28They are just as Japanese as the Japanese doing the background checks. Seems like a moronic waste of time, talent, and money.
- deviantsteve, on 05/03/2009, -1/+27Blurred tentacle porn offends me... I would like to see what exactly that tentacle is doing.
- barandon0D9, on 05/03/2009, -2/+28Yeah, the atomic bombings were pretty horrible, but they started it. An invasion of mainland Japan would have been just as deadly, if not worse, and certainly would have lasted longer. As an American I feel pretty bad about the whole thing, but Nanking is a different story. They invaded China to take it over. We attacked them because they attacked us, and a lot of other countries as well.
