- orbitalleader, on 10/12/2007, -8/+42Ah, no one in this tread actually read the very misleading Reg article. Way to go. Digg now equals slashdot in terms of knee-jerk-reacting pundits.
He never asked the Reg to do anything but lay off:
"Now I am being flooded with emails from CentOS users that after knowing the answer say the problem was simple. I think this is unjustified and would like for this to stop. Your website should provide useful information and be a credit to the IT world. I do not believe it should be used to incite the users. Your attention to this matter is greatly appreciated."
Nowhere did he ask anyone to turn off the Internet. He asked to stop getting emails from arrogant Linux advocates. Gee, there's a shock.
The guy is a tool. But the headline is 100 percent misleading, the Reg came through with its usual inaccurate b.s., and none of you actually read the article. Shame on you all. - portis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30With his "superior" intellect and 22 years of "experience", you all better watch out! He'll call the FBI on ya, if you continue to make fun of him.
He'll be *please* to do it. - Quarks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28City Managers are not elected, they are hired by the Mayor and city council to administer the government.
I'm not an American and I know this.
Makes you think doesn't it? - gekkokid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26start a petition to remove him from your state
- bairy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17"I do not follow instructions that show up when a website that I am not familiar with appears on my computer and I do not think anyone with experience would do so either"
He has a point, I have experience so when I install new software I completely ignore anything it might be telling me and shoot of arrogant rude emails to someone who has nothing to do with how it's configured on my PC.
I then often blame that person for not fixing the problem they didn't cause, before threatening them until they do help fix the problem they didn't cause and then I blame them for not fixing it sooner.
I also openly tell them to make it all public (in the hope it'll shame and embarass their obviously imcompetent asses) before deciding that that backfired more than it was supposed to and I ask someone else to make it de-public.
And I do this all over a simple misconfiguration. Yes.
Does the man not know when to just be quiet? - Vogateer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23Take a look at the article, since the headline is ridiculously misleading, and this time he actually made a reasonable request. He only asked that people stop flooding his inbox with mail about the CentOS debacle, for which he should be ashamed. I would have preferred an apology to the CentOS team, and something acknowledging he was in the wrong, but seems like he's too stubborn to do the right thing.
Please remember this guy is a city manager, and from the looks of it, he's in no way responsible for running the town's web page, or doing anything tech-related. It's possible he may even do his day job well, despite his ignorance of the inner workings of web servers. He deserved a ribbing for both the silly threats about the FBI and the ridiculous claim of 22 years of experience in IT suggesting he knew what he was talking about, but noone deserves this sort of deceptive headline rubbing salt in the wound by people who seem so intent on lambasting a "hick" that they'll resort to this sort of misleading nonsense. - bairy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16"But the headline is 100 percent misleading, the Reg came through with its usual inaccurate b.s., and none of you actually read the article."
I'd agree that El Reg have exhadurated his specific request into something bigger. This is something they unfortuantely do too often.
And I'd agree he probably has good cause to make the request. Just seeing some of the reactions here and on CentOS's forum I can only imagine the type of stuff he had to put up with. I think he's probably had enough shame thrust upon him so yes, he's right to make the request and people should stop emailing him.
Having said that, he's *still* convinced it was his FBI threats that got CentOS to act, and as Reg points out he couldn't even manage a "oh thanks for spotting the typos" so he deserves some more ribbing.. just not in his personal inbox. - defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23I forgot. Where do they keep the Internet on/off switch? I could have sworn it was somewhere in Canada.
- deut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Classic quote from the register...
"The whole debacle in Oklahoma should not come as a shock to anyone. This is exactly the sort of thing that happens when you give people in developing countries computers. If we can just manage to stay the course, we can help these poor bastards overcome the gap.
Charles Henderson" - Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I'll call Al Gore and ask him to shut off his invention.....
- Ignathius, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14the only thing that needs to be paid attention to here is his first few words:
"I do not follow instructions..."
as this should be evident by reading the first couple of replies from CentOS. it's too bad. he really should have.
If you are a member of the general public:
The fact that you are seeing this page indicates that the website you just visited is either experiencing problems, or is undergoing routine maintenance.
If you would like to let the administrators of this website know that you've seen this page instead of the page you expected, you should send them e-mail.
gee, isn't that what CentOS told him to do in their first reply?
this man is an idiot, plain and simple. each reply from CentOS had instructions for him to get the problem fixed, yet after several replies back and forth, he wasn't able to figure out the problem until CentOS tracked down his hosting provider *for him*, and found out they had recently had a crash. even now, the page still displays the apache test page. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13HEY! we don't want him. You grew him. You deal with him. :-P
- duality, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15You know, we give F's to college students who fail their classes, and then they usually have to leave. In this guy's case, I'd love to do the opposite: send him to college as a Computer Science student, and tell him he's under house/campus arrest until he graduates! (And that he can't change his major, of course.) As a Computer Science student at at a major college in Oklahoma, I'd also love to bump into this guy and give him a piece of my mind.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I'm gonna write the internet a letter!

- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10He is an old man who in his time knew everything he needed to know. But as time goes on, his knowledge becomes history and the new world forming around him is taking him from "Being very in site full and knowledgeable" to a sad "analog" human..... Including Spell Check.
- SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12@vogateer:
The Headline isn't misleading, but the article is somewhat poorly written (there *is* a difference).
Basically he asked The Register to "halt the publicity". As if The Register had the power to remove all instances of this negative publicity from the entire Internet. Thus the headline. - BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Guys, you all know the Register is a "British" thing right? Right?
How many of you actually know a "British" person??
If you know said British person, have you not noticed how unbelievably "dry" their sense of humour is. You do "get" British humour right?
Do you watch "The Office", "Ali G", stuff like that?
We are world renound for being "Piss Takers" and it has nearly gotten me in trouble more than once in the States, sometimes they just don't get it, seems like this guy is one of them.....
The Register is a "Fun" site, that happens to have some news too..... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9i think they are just trying tp provoke him more. after all his request IS stupid. how can el reg stop people sending him emails, turn off the internet? seems about it.
this guy sounds like a typical small town government bully boy, he tried to bully everyone around him into fixing his own stupidity, then when it's shown he's at fault he just wants to back away no questions asked. i don't think so *****. i can just imagine how much of a prick he would have to been to the centos and his isp's staff. he deserves the 100000 emails telling him he's a douche
maybe then it'll sink in. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10City Manager is not a tech job.
- leerose204, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I kind of resent that quote:
"The whole debacle in Oklahoma should not come as a shock to anyone. This is exactly the sort of thing that happens when you give people in developing countries computers. If we can just manage to stay the course, we can help these poor bastards overcome the gap."
I'm from Oklahoma. Yeah there are a lot of dumb asses here but not all of us are stupid rednecks.
Damn it...this guy just has to make us all look retarded. - Bhima, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Well... you could always set a reminder in your calendar a few months away... so you could send him a friendly reminder about how he made himself (and by extension Oklahoma) a laughing stock and while you're at it you should say that you are appalled at his mean spirited arrogance.
I'm sure mailing him now wouldn't do much good... but I have to wonder... when he gets my e-mail from Austria telling him he's a world famous ass... will he reassess his troubleshooting techniques? - csimpkins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Maybe I missed something, but where in that article does the man say he wants the internet shut off?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I kept rereading the article to make sure I was reading the right one. He never asked for the internet to be turned off. He asked for the flood of emails to stop. There are many ways to accomplish that without turning off the internet. It seems the Reg is ignorant of that fact. The Reg is trying to barbeque this guy. True, he doesn't understand how the internet works but many politicians have never even used a computer. Give the guy a break.
- moshguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9There are people out there like this. People who have worked in the tech industry but don't know what an OS is.
I once had an IT manager who went into mission critical server and arbitrarily deleted .dll and .sys files in the Windows folder. His plan was to remove these unused files and make the server go faster. Well when he rebooted, the computer wouldn't even boot. We got to spend all night rebuilding the server.
These people need to be shot. - brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"The web service provider did not know what could cause the problem and had _never_ heard of "CentOS"."
"I only got help _after_ threatening to contact the FBI."
The way he describes it, it's as if he sent a different set of emails! - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Man did he put a spin on his rebuttal, and made himself sound like an innocent bystander. And that whole hind-sight is 20/20 thing, "that after knowing the answer say the problem was simple".
No dip-*****, everyone knew what the problem was immediately, and so did the folks at CentOS, you just chose not to listen, and when you finally did listen, you said something like, "Well why didn't you just tell me that in the first place!"
I said this the last time, if you don't want technologically handicapped people in your counties public office, get out there and vote! What do you expect when the only people that ever vote are over 60. - beanfeast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Sorry, bashing the guy is just funny. I frigging hate people who rather than admit they're wrong just get louder. Sure, he's being scapegoated. Funny though.
- briareus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I don't think anyone deserves a flood of angry email but this guy does come pretty close. He was an ass. Worse, he was an idiotic, uninformed ass who blamed everyone but himself for problems that he kicked off and blew out of proportion by issuing threats to call the FBI. Even worse, he never properly thanked those that helped him nor did he apologize to those he threatened. And to add more crap to the fire he goes off on The Register because a bunch of individuals thought he was an ass and gave him a piece of their mind. He may have not literally asked to have the Internet shut down but he might as well have for assuming that The Register was responsible or even in control of a number of individuals. I might have said "At least he'll learn from all this..." but I'm not that naive or stupid. His alleged "22 years experience" clearly indicates that this guy isn't capable of learning much if he's pulling childish antics like this.
- unfinity, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Speaking of spell check - it's "insightful".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6wolfyboy
your completely wrong about any kind of libel suit. you are allowed to headline stories in a creative way to draw attention to them. libel would be if they some how claim he actually said it and quoted him as saying so. if what your suggesting is the case every news paper in the world would be snowed under for libel.
also, you might want to rethink your statment about the register being protected under the 1st amendment. the register is a uk publication. - orbitalleader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6" so he deserves some more ribbing.. just not in his personal inbox."
Yeah, that's a fair stance. But this is El Reg we're talking about. - Quarks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Just when you think we've reached the threshold of human stupidity the bar is raised yet again.
Words can't describe what must be going on in that man's head (or what's not). - xioner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6
interesting letter, but innacurate title. - 10scott10, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12every digg this story gets should count as a petition to remove him to canada.
- dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6And the City of Tuttle website STILL isn't fixed!!!
- Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6> "I do not follow instructions that show up when a website that I am not familiar with appears on my computer and I do not think anyone with experience would do so either"
...but he's perfectly happy to email the "hackers" listed on that website and ask them for help?
It's after-the-fact backpedalling that he's disguising as common sense. Somebody who genuinely believed that their website had been hacked by the CentOS developers would not contact them to resolve the situation if they had a fully-functioning brain. - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Holy *****, thanks for being the 12th damn person to say that!
- cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6funny, this was already on the front page yesterday and it got buried...
then it get's slashdotted and suddenly it's back on the main page again?? - MjrParanoid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Can't stop laughing!!!
Almost did.
Then I found his picture on the new and inproved city of tuttle site.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
must control myself, long enough to type....
They couldn't figure out how to work linux, so they used IIS, and then they couldn't figure out how to change the dns record so they just registered a new name.
HAHAHAHAA ok.... wait .. I can get this out. Be stromg MajorP be strong.
I can just see them standing around...
Jethro: So what should our new domain name be?
Cletus: Well the old ones broked (www.cityoftuttle.org )so our new domain name should reflect that our new site aint broked.
Jethro: How about http://www.Tuttle-OK.gov/ ?
AHHHHHH AH HA HA HA HA !!!!!
OW it hurts, it actually hurts!!! - donolsen1155, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Nope, didn't work. I see we're all still here.
Where on the internet do you submit bugs for the Internet Off Button? - oxymoron69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6maybe someone should send this goon a tinfoil hat... but he works for the .gov so technically he **IS** the man right?
wow. people need to increase this mans mental agony so he can give up
the job he's holding on to with dear life as he becomes a world wide joke.
it's a sad sign of the world today, clear out your desk old civil servant man, and make
way for a younger possibly bigger civil service ***** to make us laugh when the "hackers"
come to take over his towns homepage... heh - bairy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hmm well I've managed to contradict myself. In one reply I say he's right to ask, in another I say he should have kept quiet.
I did mean both - he knew reg would publish that request so he should have stayed quiet. But the request was valid so he shouldn't.
Anyway, perhaps this'll teach him not to be a dick in the first place next time.
I'll be quiet now. - blankoboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8American comedy Gold!
- hometoast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I saw nowhere he asked the Reg to turn of the Internet.
- sonicdevo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Eh, as an Oklahoman, I look at it this way:
People in our state may be less technically competent than the national average, but (excluding this douche) they're also abnormally nice. - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Uh...he was being sarcastic....jesus.
- simpleid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5someone should let him know about digg.com and point him to this page, i'd love to see him react to all this.
