- howdareyou, on 11/09/2007, -4/+75I still miss the ***** out of OiNK. I refuse to delete my bookmark.
- markbrown, on 11/09/2007, -3/+36I don't pirate. I borrow from the internet until I'm rich someday.
- LogicBomB, on 11/09/2007, -1/+31The way people talk of OiNK makes me feel like I was in the bathroom when aliens came down, gave everyone a hug, and left by the time I finished.
- Ianki, on 11/09/2007, -7/+36Real Justice: uploaded a good 130 gb with a 18 ratio on oink, and still unable to get an invite to either of the sites listed.
- crash013, on 11/07/2007, -2/+30They will be in time.
- asdfuiop, on 11/06/2007, -6/+31...Big Content? I mean come on, I think my vocabulary has already reached its limit for sensationalist terms
- asquare, on 11/07/2007, -4/+24Good little article. Maybe some day They will realize the dream we all have: easily accessible, good quality, DRM-free music.
Plus I like the title. Piglets can OiNK too ;) - neodorian, on 11/07/2007, -4/+23Yeah and it also sucks for those of us stuck on public sites because we don't know anyone. I understand the reason for the fight club rules but it still sucks.
- PA42, on 11/06/2007, -2/+18When you create music you can do that. Although the RIAA may be unfair, it is not nearly as unfair as you (or anyone else) saying how someone is going to make a living.
- gharding, on 11/07/2007, -0/+15There are plenty of private torrent sites that don't require invites. If you get onto one of those and maintain a good ratio and post in the forums to get you known, you can usually get yourself into some invite-only sites. And from then on, it's pretty much a ratio masturbation contest.
- Matt2k, on 11/07/2007, -2/+14Says the person who doesn't make music for a living.
Not everyone can or wants to take off from their home and family for months at a time.
And it's the artist's choice, regardless. Who are you to say that a lifetime of musical experience and years creating an album ought to be given away freely, and recouped only with work above and beyond that. - speerross, on 11/07/2007, -2/+11Becuase they were going to replace a site that took like 5 years to build in a week? They'll be 50% of what OiNK was in a month, and thats impressive progress. I'm just waiting for what.cd to get it's new server so I can get an invite
- oldhick, on 11/06/2007, -6/+15Give the music away freely! Tour for money. Problem solved.
- norcalscan, on 11/07/2007, -4/+12I had no idea WTF Oink was. Saw a bunch of headlines hit Digg, ignored those for a while, then read an essay on the music industry and it explained Oink. I missed Oink?!! Nooooo! But thanks RIAA for introducing me (inept user) to a bunch of new options...
- speerross, on 11/06/2007, -0/+8Becuase it has driven the community out of their comfort zone and forced them to be active pirates, new digital file sharing infastructure is being built as we speak and thousands of new members are being driven to OiNKs successors. New sites are being built from the ashes of the old and these new sites will eventually surpass OiNK; they've disrupted music piracy for about a week. In 6 months it'll be bigger than ever.
- gharding, on 11/07/2007, -1/+9Everything has to start somewhere. I'm currently hunting for a place to start seeding with my seedboxes with, and I can bring a couple hundred new torrents with me, most likely. I'm sure there are plenty others like me ready to build up a new site.
- Matt2k, on 11/06/2007, -1/+9> They will realize the dream we all have: easily accessible, good quality, DRM-free music.
Yes, too bad such sites that offer DRM-free music for sale don't exist. It'd be really neat if Amazon, iTunes, eMusic or if the artists themselves could release unencumbered MP3 files for sale.
Oh wait. - CraigB12, on 11/07/2007, -3/+10I thought I was the only one that hadn't deleted it lol. I've been trying to get a Waffles.fm invite, but they're damn near impossible to get.
- luchid, on 11/06/2007, -0/+7Wow people, let's not make a fanboy war out of our tracker preference. We already have several going on for OS, console, music player/phone. Let's leave trackers out of that....
- joeyjojo, on 11/06/2007, -0/+7Nice sarcasem, but if falls flat.
The reality is that it's STILL not easy to buy DRM free music. It's gotten easier, for sure, but you still hit road blocks.
For instance, I wanted go grab the Allison Kraus/Robert Plant album this weekend. I was hoping emusic had it, but, well, they rarely have it. Oh well. Off to Amazon. Damn, they're not selling it either. *sigh*. iTunes it is! Ah, crap...just the DRMed format.
There's still a lot of hoop jumping to get an easy-to-download DRM-free album it seems. - postalblowfish7, on 11/07/2007, -2/+8nothing is yet to fill the void in my life. having a long-standing oink account and a good ratio doesn't get you invites to what.cd or whomever else the article talks about.
- mrmcphee, on 11/07/2007, -3/+9Hail HYDRA! Immortal HYDRA! We shall never be destroyed! Cut off one limb and two more shall take its place!
- gharding, on 11/07/2007, -0/+5That's because every OiNK user is pestering the new guys. It's tough to go from nothing to something the size of OiNK. So just be patient.
- inactive, on 11/06/2007, -4/+9What is "Big Content"?
- merdiesel, on 11/07/2007, -0/+5I love how people are posting their email addresses in here thinking they're getting an invite...
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4Seriously. Even when OiNK *itself* first started it wasn't 1% of what it ended up being. Stop with the negative attitude and help build up the community again!
- neutrascrub, on 11/06/2007, -2/+6just wait, it's coming
- wheelzr, on 11/07/2007, -2/+6Dear lord I still haven't recovered from losing oink, and how freaking impossible it is to get an invite to any private trackers since oink went down. Between myself and a few friends we uploaded over 700 gigs on oink!
- speerross, on 11/05/2007, -1/+5Whats your basis of saying it is smaller? There are more networks than there were in the napster era, and those that were in existance have grown massively (Usenet, BitTorrent). The rise of bittorrent post-napster is not to be underestimated, it has put thousands of gb's of data at the hands of the ordinary user - you don't need to be an expert anymore. Try thinking beyond MP3's and you'll see piracy has grown massively.
- merdiesel, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4Oh here we go again...
This douche is always around to teach you right from wrong.
Why don't you just go ***** yourself buddy. - inactive, on 11/06/2007, -0/+4selection is still *****.
- inactive, on 11/05/2007, -3/+6No.
- HeyaBILL, on 11/06/2007, -2/+5http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Content
- Endemoniada, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3I have said, since day one, that I won't buy music online until they offer EVERYTHING I get on a CD, at lossless quality and for less money. Those are my requirements. And guess what, when Trent and Saul Williams released Niggy Tardust with all the graphics, in lossless quality and for only $5, I BOUGHT IT.
I don't want to download illegal music. I want to support the artist. What I don't want is to get ripped off by paying full price for a decidedly cheaper product, or support the greedy ***** at RIAA. As soon as I get respected as a CUSTOMER, instead of being spat on as a "consumer", I will start buying music again. Until then, no deal. - Matt2k, on 11/09/2007, -3/+6It is easy to buy DRM free music. It's called a CD. Hot new invention.
Yes, you do have to rip it. I know the one-button click process is intimidating for some.
But really, sarcasm aside, how many excuses can people come up with? We have a decent selection of high quality online DRM-free music that is growing every day. It's not expensive. You can usually buy a track ala carte. And when you can't get it online, you can still get the ultimate quality CD package that comes with physical bonuses.
You will NOT convince me that spending a minute quickly checking a handful of website stores is somehow more work than managing an invitation to oink and maintaining a share ratio. - zazzalicious, on 11/09/2007, -1/+4The RIAA certainly do say it is wrong:
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060215-6190 ...
And it's still illegal in the UK.
http://discontents.wordpress.com/2006/10/31/rippin ... - inactive, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3erm - you did only 60% of your share....

No one at all eh? - inactive, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3decent selection isn't good enough. And there is lots of other ways to get music besides oink, i've never been and I have 15000 songs all downloaded. The legal music store selection just could never even come close to the net, and I know way more music because I have access to it, plus the net always has the jump on the market. Physical bonuses mean nothing to me, I would rather download, I don't even have a CD player anymore, just my computer hooked up to speakers. Your not really supposed to rip CDs, and you might think that doesn't matter, but then your selection of ethical rules regarding music is as arbitrary as mine, if ripping a CD is fine, then why not downloading, and don't say you're paying the artists, you're not, artists just don't make money that way, they get a back end and then a pittance for royalties and most of their money comes from other ventures.
- kingkilr, on 11/06/2007, -5/+8But are you willing to pay?
- Sneakydave, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3Start by ignoring the elitists above me and send off an email containing proof of oink membership to the waffles guys, their email can be found on the oink memorial forum. An easier method would be to join the what.cd irc and wait until invites are being given out again (in a couple of days) then grab one. Again, the oink memorial forum will point you in the right direction.
- GeekSwag, on 11/06/2007, -0/+3Must...bookmark...comment....
- mozzep, on 11/06/2007, -1/+3Please don't just invite people at random, at least have some proof that they will contribute to the community.
- Audacitor, on 11/06/2007, -1/+3Step one is don't ask how to get an invite.
- inactive, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2grow up lads
- TheCheeks, on 11/06/2007, -3/+5yup, theres my "OiNK" toolbar shortcut.... dunno when or if ill ever delete it
- merdiesel, on 11/06/2007, -2/+4I hope you never make it on there..
- andrew522, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1I was just also now reminded of how Napster ended. I recall looking for services forever to download free music at the time, and then there was this article about Napster going down, and I was like "*****... I just missed the goldrush."
deja vu. - Spliced88, on 11/06/2007, -5/+6Indeed.
- hobgobbler, on 11/06/2007, -2/+3I'm a little pissed at all these invite-only sites. I have a ton of lossless music I've collected from over the years, ready and willing to share but since I don't seem to have the right "connections" I'm out of luck. So screw you guys, I'm goin home.
