best question/answer
smartface> did they actually question you?
OiNK> of course, for hours
OiNK> the police had very limited technical knowledge, which made the interview quite amusing actually.
OiNK> i wasn't willing to teach them how to use a computer
OiNK> they actually wanted me to teach them how to set up a website
OiNK> i just told them to google it. - flonglonger, on 11/07/2007, -0/+141"You are under arrest for something, now show us what you did!"
- Scotty87, on 11/07/2007, -3/+96OiNK> they got my company wrong, but besides that, it's quite a good article
OiNK> the police were here around 30 mins ago, and they were not happy one bit when they left
OiNK> they asked me how i was coping with all the media coming around
OiNK> i said "i don't mind it at all, i'm just telling them the truth, unlike you"
Amen! - inactive, on 10/26/2007, -2/+90A noteworthy postscript, at the bottom of the page:
"Edit: A few people have asked me if we logged the IP you snatched things from. The answer is no, we did not log snatch IPs." - Nougat, on 11/07/2007, -3/+79Whew! I'm so glad to hear that he's still a vegetarian!
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -8/+70In america, that would have been followed by a "wut did you just say boy?" and subsequent tasering/clubbing/screwdriver sodomizing/pepper spraying (for resisting arrest of course).
- Nougat, on 11/07/2007, -1/+57Not being ***** FTW
- tizz66, on 10/29/2007, -1/+52In case anyone is wondering, he got bailed 'for free' because bail in the UK doesn't mean a bond gets posted. Bail just means you're released pending further action, though you usually have to surrender your passport and report to the police station every day.
- f4nt0m4s, on 10/26/2007, -1/+51dugg for 'asshat:'
"MooIsTooWrong> do you think most of the people in this channel are asking asshat questions?
OiNK> yes"
oh and it looks like he's getting his chance to expose how poorly this was handled to the media - Smokersroom, on 10/26/2007, -0/+48It means you're not *****.
- tocheeba, on 10/26/2007, -3/+44Thank you for posting this. It definitely clears up some ***** people were posting around the net (even digg). It seems OiNK is gone for good...so its time to wait for another organized site to get up & running.
- flonglonger, on 11/07/2007, -1/+34Phew, my IP snatch is safe (crossing my legs)
- Alba, on 10/26/2007, -4/+35But if the IFPI/police infiltrated oink before they shut it down, they could have gathered IP addresses then. IP addresses are easily available of anyone you're leeching from, just by opening up the advanced screens in your bittorrent client, no?
- amneosis, on 10/25/2007, -1/+31PC Plod: "What's Google?"
- inactive, on 10/26/2007, -3/+30Yawg> did you anticipate a raid in the past? Did you take any precautions regarding site design and logs and whatnot to protect the community?
OiNK> the logs we store aren't enough to inciminate users
----------
Good. I respect sites even more when they refuse to keep logs. Especially the usenet based services - the last thing I need is some asshat organization doing a raid and snooping through logs looking for people to ***** over. - tizz66, on 10/25/2007, -0/+26I should also have added almost everyone who is arrested for non-violent crime gets bail, so it's no indication of what evidence, charges etc. they have. It's just a given that after questioning he'd get bail, unless he'd been arrested for rape, murder etc.
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -2/+25Fact is, most law enforcement (and judges, for that matter) are completely technologically illiterate.
For example, look at that RIAA case against the woman where her judgment was like $220k. If the judge had any head on his shoulders, he would've thrown that out and had his chance to uphold the constitution against a "cruel and unusual punishment".
I think a lot of these lawyers simply talk a good game and convince judges, who don't know ***** about what's really going on, that what these people are doing is on par with some type of conspiracy fraud thing.
But then again, if they had any solid head on their shoulders, they'd step back and realize, "Wait.. this is about sharing music... misdemeanor. $100 fine. Dismissed."
While sharing music may technically be illegal, there are a lot more threatening misdemeanors than that, and getting caught uploading files shouldn't be any harsher of a punishment than a simple speeding ticket. - inactive, on 10/26/2007, -1/+23and that its a scam - do not donate to anyone pretending to represent oink!
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/26/2007, -2/+23Q: What about those who donated?
A: Honestly, we do not know. Of course you cannot expect to get any donated money back. Accounts have been seized, so far nobody knows whats gonna happen. If you did not donate like thousands of dollars, you should not worry too much.
I doubt anyone was donating thousands, and if they were, they probably will be targeted because they are probably someone who was helping run the site. - hamish, on 10/26/2007, -1/+20other then the fact that he's dead.
- murf43143, on 10/26/2007, -0/+19I bet that guy would be fun to drink with.
- mrlyons, on 10/26/2007, -1/+18Again, EVERYONE was seeding. You had to in order to maintain your membership. They had very strict ratio requirements that forced users to seed. So, let's hear from people who aren't completely ignorant ok?
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -0/+17Its highly lucrative subscription based site, open only to a select few hardened criminals who specialize in posting information on websites BEFORE IT EVEN HAPPENS!
- mindsnare, on 10/25/2007, -1/+18cops just wanted to play it in the offices, that is, in fact if they can work out how to plug it in, after reading that, I don't give them much of a chance.
- br0ken1128, on 10/25/2007, -0/+17Well in the case of the recent RIAA victory it was pretty strong indicator because they contacted the ISP to find out that the IP was registered to that person at that time..
- nopointinnames, on 10/25/2007, -3/+20Enough with the NEVER FORGOT, I have enough damn dates to remember birthdays and other ***** to try and keep up with ***** like this too. How about NEVER FORGET: Oink? That would make sense and people would know what you are talking about? Or, or, forget all this ***** because in all of history, is Oink shutting down really that big of a deal we need to actually remember it?
- amneosis, on 10/26/2007, -0/+16Holy *****! I hope Google don't keep logs.
- ayeroxor, on 10/25/2007, -0/+13Let me explain: They logged snatches, but they did not associate snatches with an IP. mmkay?
- mindsnare, on 10/29/2007, -1/+15Gee they must have had a crack team of IT specialist Police interviewing him, what's the deal with the anti-tech coppers arresting under very techinical grounds, very weird.
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -0/+13Plus they would only be able to get information on people seeding/leeching the same torrents they we connected to so its likely they would target the most popular torrents - there's no way they could have connected the every single one anyway.
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -0/+12Sure, but it means that there isn't a way to tie a history of torrent snatches to a particular account, right?
- DarkDx, on 10/26/2007, -0/+12Why the hell did they take the xbox and left the wii? :S
- brasso, on 10/26/2007, -1/+13But they did however log snatches and they did also log the IP-address you logged in from, they just didn’t log what IP-address you used when downloading specific torrents.
- 1town, on 10/26/2007, -2/+13It's not illegal. Not yet.
- inactive, on 10/26/2007, -5/+16Also, why in the hell would he get fired from his job? That doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
I sure as hell hope my employer wouldn't pull some knee jerk ***** like that if I was wrongfully arrested.
Then again, I suppose it's an eye opener. If your employer won't stand behind you and instead fires you, then perhaps it wasn't a great place to work anyway. Kinda like if your significant other randomly dumps you - well, on one side it sucks, but on the other... good thing they showed their true colors allowing you to just move on and find something better.
Much more opportunity out there. - fLUx1337, on 10/26/2007, -2/+13I can't wait for all the half baked copys of OiNK to popup on Dreamhost shared hosting, from kids sitting in their bedroom just wanting to be liked! :P (btw, thats not me saying OiNK was like that, he created a great site, which obviously people thought was needed)
Acctully knew OiNK before he started oink.me.uk, as I used to do alot of work on the TBsource, which the site used....glad it seems hes not being knocked too hard by this, sure, hes lost the site, but it seems they don't have much on him.... - mywhitenoise, on 10/26/2007, -4/+14It is when you listen to literally hundreds of bands, and can't afford to own over 1000 albums.
I own over 450 albums, and have about another 450 on mp3s. Don't tell me I don't support artists. First off, bands hardly get anything from cd sells. Second, I go to their shows, buy their shirts, buy their albums if it's good. And third, had I not been exposed to these albums for free, I wouldn't have wasted $15 on a cd just by word of mouth. - jstone, on 10/25/2007, -2/+12It's not stealing. For it to be theft, a material item must have been taken. 'File Sharing' is copyright infringement; no material item has been taken, but the copyright holder's exclusive rights to distribute are being infringed upon.
- persept, on 10/25/2007, -1/+11I was actually in that IRC channel. It basically consisted of a hundred people shouting dumb questions at OiNK... almost all of which he just ignored... It's good that paine took the time to find the few ones he did answer.
- SpykerSpeed, on 10/25/2007, -3/+13You mean 1 dollar for a crappy 128 kb DRM-laden iTunes-only song. The industry should come up with a better pay plan. Like 10 cents per listen, until you get up to 10 listens (1 dollar) and after that the song is your's for good. Because often times I can't decide if I like a song "long-term" until after I've had a few listens.
- Stalks, on 10/26/2007, -0/+9The ISP's DHCP server (the server that gives you your dynamically assigned IP address at logon) will keep logs of what time you were connected and what IP you were given. The court can then ask the ISP for the account information of any DHCP assigned IP address at any given time.
In short, thinking that a dynamic IP makes you safe is very wrong. - NekstBestThing, on 10/26/2007, -0/+9Good job we just gave them instructions.
- codmate, on 10/25/2007, -0/+8Using libtorrent, I could very easily write a script to connect to every torrent on any tracker, grab all the IPs of the swarm I was connected to and then get off the torrent.
You wouldn't get all the IPs of everybody using every torrent, but you would get a lot of IPs! - spudnic, on 10/25/2007, -2/+10"The answer is no, we did not log snatch IPs"
"But they did however log snatches"
Uh... - amneosis, on 10/25/2007, -1/+9So it turns out that pink text on a black background really messes with my eyesight.
I don't understand the bit about the "police not being happy at all", is that because of the media interest? - rreadysetno, on 10/25/2007, -1/+9Good job the police don't know what they're doing, otherwise they would have probably tried this.
- clothmonkey, on 10/25/2007, -2/+9OK, I'll play this game for a second here. What is the comparative harm to society between filesharing and reckless driving?
- JonnyTrombone, on 10/26/2007, -0/+7They probably wanted to play Halo 3
- SamuraiPanda, on 10/25/2007, -1/+8^- If I read that comment before the first, my response would've been something like: "You just joined digg?"
- gavin422, on 10/25/2007, -1/+8Maybe the police aren't happy because OiNK, uh, didn't do anything criminally wrong. The only reason this is a criminal (and not civil) investigation in the first place is because OiNK was supposedly a "paysite". Now the police are learning that, whoops, they're actually not. Guess those IFPI goons tricked us into taking all their nice servers.

What is Digg?
