I can smell the crack den from here. - PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"But with the computer people have not got to the point where they are willing to lift up the bonnet and have a go themselves."
Worst...grammar...ever ¬_¬ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree, the error messages are downright frightening to a normal computer user. Wait, "Excell - this helps to run programs on your PC." No it doesn't! It is called "Excel" and is a ***** spreadsheet application.
- KevinJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, what is this article means to me is that people like ourselves, techies are going to be the future of corporate America. Saying you don't understand tech jargon is like saying you don't have the comprehension to do your job.
In order to be a functioning individual in the modern business world you gotta be tech.
Examining the big picture this is a good thing...for me! - billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, I'm the one who posted the article and I'm the first to admit that the second page of the article only makes the problem worse. The authors should have stuck to reporting the problem and not making a horribly feeble attempt at assisting in a solution. There are many user-focused glossaries of computer terms out there for the IT pro to use as an educational tool for users. The author's definitions certainly don't make that list.
- opticsnake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I say, keep the articles coming. With idiots like the guy who wrote this one spreading misinformation all over the place, I'll always have a job!! Woohoo!

Well said. I'm 1st year college right now and I'm amazed at the people that have little to no computer knowledge. I have no idea how they expect to function in the world as driven by technology as it will be when we get out. - kolanos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Netscape was intentionally trying to confuse people when they named their browser programming language "JavaScript". They wanted to jump on the bandwagon of hype surrounding Java at the time, and since the syntax had some major similiarities to Java, they thought the association could give their language a boost.
It's only left non-techies to believe JavaScript and Java are one and the same. - billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know what you mean. On page one they describe the problem and stop just short of criticizing modern office workers for not embracing technology more willingly. Then they go on to give poor (and that's giving undue credit) explanations of technology terms. "Excell" takes the cake.
- Karyyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is trash. From my day to day experience, your average office worker is an inept fool that become offended the very second you suggest they do anything outside of their self-proclaimed job description. There's a reason those in the IT field have embraced vague-to-the-clueless terms like PEBKAC and ID10T. I can sit there and try to explain something for 20 minutes, and they don't even TRY to grasp it. Teaching algebra to 2nd-graders is preferable. Blaming IT for hiring incompetents seems the popular things to do, and quotes like "But I don't feel I should know more - that is their job. If we did it all ourselves they would be out of a job." are the icing on the cake.
Knowing more is what will enable you to NOT F&*# it up to begin with. Nowhere did I see babysitting in my job description, yet more often than not, that's EXACTLY what it feels like. Don't expect me to help people that refuse to learn the things they need to do. - green.ninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0on page 2 they had "explanations" which were either vauge or incorrect
are they trying to add to the misconceptions - Sazime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I blame extension confusing on OSes that use icons to show what programs files use rather than what kind of file it is.
- kolanos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's amazing that it takes these people an hour to type "What is a PDF?" into Google.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=what+is+a+pdf%3F&btnG=Search - C0demaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its good that these people don't know what this tech stuff is. If they knew too much I wouldn't have a job.
- tynin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The headline for this article should read, "Office blunders caused by stupid people". If you don't understand some of the basics of a computer, please, do everyone a favor and turn it off and asked your boss to fire you. Anyone that has used a computer for more than a few months should learn wtf programs they are using and what those programs basic functions are. I can understand confusion between bits and bytes, but everything else is just basic crap that you pick up with an iota or memorization. And we wonder why zombie networks are getting so large... grrrr.
- nate263, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dugg it just for the hilarious definitions they give on the second page. If you don't know what they mean, don't try to define it.
- elShaggy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0No, if y ou work on a computer daily and a stubborn enough to not want to know anything about how the goddamn thing works you dont deserve your job. And the article was written in Whales thats your problem on grammar and idiotcy. They are just as stupid as Americans.
- Slavakion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0While the statistics may be true, I can't digg a terrible article like this.
- prothall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well, I was going to say "ah, the Welsh.", but some half-wit who seriously believed the Welsh are degenerate coal-miners already sapped any humor I could get out of that. Meh.
- nwagers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@ elshaggy
Are you kidding me? You have the balls to call Americans stupid and you can't even spell "Wales". I'll admit, there are some ignorant people in this country, but you take the cake. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yeah wtf page two is all garbled.. haha
