Coming to a store near you in 2008. - Sarki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Microsoft can't ship anything on time. I'm not trying to be an anti-Microsoft zealot, but this is a little out of hand?
For Microsft how much of a difference does it make? I guess they are not planning to make Christmas sales. Who wants Office for Christmas? Doesn't Microsft make almost all of its Office money from OEMs and enterprise licensing anyway? - Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Meh. from a perfectly technical standpoint, MSO beats OOo hands down. The Development cycle (timeframe) for OOo is also nothing to brag about. It's not that bad, but it's not that good either. I'm not dogging on OOo here, but it's naive to compare it to MSO on anything other than price. MS DOES have a better product...it just happens to cost money....and a ridiculous amount of it.
- Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I think MS needs to just forget about release dates. "When it's done" works a lot better. At least then they won't end up with egg on their face when they miss the date for the umpteenth time.
I think software development timelines are retarded for things like this. They back the developers into corners and force them to produce a buggier and less finished product. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Who cares, nobody needs office 2007 right away anyhow. The only time i think its worthwhile is when people buy Vista when it ships..
Anyways, im gettin the feeling this is gonna be hugely dugg just to bash MS from the linuxmacboys.
Better it be delayed than rushed. - xXShadowstormXx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10If they need more time to perfect the product, then I'm willing to wait.
Or possibly switch to Openoffice, though I like MS Office a tiny bit better.
A tiny bit. - Philoushka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8uh Win95 actually launched in Aug 95. Not sure the point there.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The only thing they could actually do to Office to make it better is to make a 'lite" version without the 90% of features that are used by only 5% of users. But they will never do that because then they would have to charge less.
- datagod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Seriously, is anyone out there even MILDLY interested in installing Office 2007? I still use Office 97 at work...and I use StarOffice at home.
Other than some cool SQL BI tools (aka Proclarity) that they bought and merged recently, what on earth can 10 years of development give to a word processor?
Seriously, can you imagine if they kept on developing tyewriters beyond the mid eighties? Or hoola hoops? You get my drift... - chicoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yep, especially when they're rebuilding the GUI and adding new features at the same time. Not to mention that Office has evolved into a beast to maintain.
- justinhancock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5We should by now be used to Microsoft delaying their products. But the age old question still applies; would you rather have buggy software or more complete software at a later date?
Is the extra delay really going to kill you? Chances are most of us can survive the delays as we don't NEED the new features in these products. I have a stable solution running (Windows XP) that suits all my needs; the new features of Vista and Office 2007 are just icing on the cake. I don't NEED them. It'd be nice, yes, but I'd rather have less-buggy software. - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Unfortunately the only discernible difference between MS's buggy released-on-time software and their delayed supposedly bug-free software is that one is late.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Yeah when the ***** has MS ever perfected anything?
- borchard76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'll say this again: if you use spreadsheets at all, MSO 2007 is the best thing in a long time. Check it out: 100,000 columns and over 1,000,000 rows. That is enough to make me want it.
- adiggtion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No matter how you slice Office 2007, many, many average office worker bees will be totally confused by the new Ribbon interface. Microsoft always trumpets "increased productivity", but what about the lost productivity (and time) in large companies having to now re-train all their workers?
I'm nothing if not a realist. :-) - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If that is so, they need to abandon their current year-date version naming scheme.
Ever since Windows 95, they've been using year dates rather than version numbers, which inherently sets them up for plainly obvious and publically *embarassing* delays, rather than just delays, which everyone in the software industry runs into from time to time. When Windows 95 came out, I was thinkin', "Gee, considering that they thought this was big enough a deal to skip versions 4-94, this sure sucks." ^_~ - acevoncash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6naaaawww they will call it office 07 even if it comes out in 08.. windows 95 anyone?
- poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3[still using Office '97, happily]
- satori3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I grabbed the office 2007 beta and have been using it for about a month now. It's a little slow and a bit of a resource hog. Not the end of the world as I would expect nothing less... what bugs me is that beyond the difference in look and menus I see no reason to buy it. 2003 has everything I want already.
- Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Boondoggle-
You wanna enlighten us on when ANYONE has perfected ANY piece of software with anywhere near the scale of the projects in question? Don't be a moron. - kirupa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When you spend a lot of your time using Office like many individuals do, even minor usability improvements are great boosts to productivity.
- kodeiko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The last Office that I've used was Office 97. Other than the new interfaces, feature wise is there any _need_ to upgrade at all?
- vandalet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6the new version of Open Office just came out. Not many of us need to spend $300+ on Microsoft Office.
- SPL3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I downloaded the beta and used it for about a week, I generally liked it better than my current 2003 version. The problem was that all my e-mail coming through Outlook came in blank, the message did arrive but no information in it. I took it out of my HD easily enough, I had big concerns that I wouldn't be able to install 2003 back again which proved to be unfounded. It did crash a few times though.
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4How much will it cost to update? Is there actually a serious reason to update Office? Will it make you more money? Will it save you money? If not, what's the big deal? Why keep Microsoft on the gravy train?
Here's my question. Who here seriously needs to upgrade their word processor? I could use Word version 6 just as well. Their spread sheet? These are the cornerstones of Office; unless there's been some serious breakthrough in these two that I just can't live without, I don't see the upgrade as being very compelling at all. Heck, I don't even use MS Word to its full potential as is!
The only component of Office that is begging to be upgraded is Powerpoint, but I've long since abandoned PP for Keynote. And if Apple keeps up the good work, I might just abandon Word for Pages, which does 80-90 of what I actually use from Word. I'm wondering what the rumored "Numbers" spread sheet will be like, 'cause I wouldn't mind ditching Excel for a worthy contender either. - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They're running out of excuses. They can't say that Vista is being delayed because resources have been diverted to Office. They can't say Office is delayed because there are resources that have been diverted to Vista. They can't say that IE7 is delayed because resources have been diverted to either... What's left?
- GarySwager, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had the same problem. In my case, it was because of AVG antivirus. Disabling 'certify mail' solved the problem for me.
- Drahkar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Frankly, I've used the beta for the new version of office. The beta I used was... weird to say the least. Its like they tried to completely remake the interface and it didn't turn out all that good.
If its delayed my only guess is that they got so much bad feedback on the interface they are redoing it. - HiddenLYNX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2But the problem is, it could still not be any better if its delayed than if it is rushed. Either way, im not expecting much out of redmond anytime soon. All the fancy pantsy additions to vista are not so much there anymore, they've all been dropped. What else is interesting, is MS is proud of their Mac version of their Office over their windows version, I agree, its nice, but OO.o is still very much another option.
- tnvwboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Previous versions will only be available for a very limited time when O2007 is released and they are not generally any cheaper. Why would they be? As many here have posted, they are perfectly fine for most individuals, so the value has not be reduced by the release of a new vesion. This isn't the auto industry.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Or you can use Wordperfect. People always overlook that.
- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 Drahkar, I doubt that because the new interface was based on the feedback and usability testing on what to improve from previous versions of Office.
And the XBox360 "launched" on time IIRC, even if the distribution model was not fully up to speed.
Although there may have been a few requests to allow users to enable the previous menu system while they transistion to the ribbon idea. - tnvwboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the Beta is pretty decent, but I'd rather it be delayed and right the first time than have to install a service pack three months later.
Sure I'm disappointed though. My company buys PCs at the end of the year and I was looking forward to getting the roll out started. Ah well. This'll give me more time for training. - baldrick5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MS Office 2000
BEST OFFICE SUITE EVER!!! - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's always WGA?
- tnvwboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very large companies are usually a version or two behind the curve anyway so it's really not a big deal for the big big companies. They'll have ample time to setup training sessions for their employees.
It's the small companies that'll take a hit in productivity and training. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I liked Office 97 the most. It was fast, but had the formatting features needed. Since then, there's been alot of "automation" and collobaration features added, which most people really don't need. So it amounts to bloat.
Why doesn't MS learn to make features OPTIONAL? Like for Windows itself. There's a ton of crap in Vista I would like to remove so it doesn't take up 10GB and 1GB of RAM. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Quality is not part of Microsoft's business strategy.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3You can either wait for Office 2007 to be released, or you can wait for OpenOffice.org to render your spreadsheet by then. Either way...
- TheRealPod, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4There should be some madden esque way of referring to office. How about Font Update 2007? Or "Stupid EMail Pop-up 2007"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Who cares when its going to be released, it will have very few new features that most of us will ever use.
- st0ney, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Are there really alot of people that are looking forward to the next version of office? Besides looking prettier there isn't anything that most users will need. But I guess previous versions will be cheaper now.
- NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Office 2007 is great, I've been using the beta for a whiloe now, I'm not sure what new features it has but the new UI makes things ALOT better and I've been using features I didn't know existed because it's so easy to find what you want.
The article talks about an october release, I though it was scheduled (sp?) for Jan '07? - exec721, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it just me or does Microsoft actually like pushing back release dates? It almost seems like they irresponsibly promise a release date knowing it could very well be pushed back. Is it all just for publicity? It would appear so to me but then again I'm not the one "behind the desk" so to speak.
- themuffinman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1lolz they call it duke nukem forever cuz its taking forever to make
/originality - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5There's not enough time before the sun goes nova for microsoft to "perfect" a product.
-jcr - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You're that PC guy from the new Apple ads, aren't you?
- DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0If you need 1,000,000 rows for a spreadsheet, you should really consider using a database instead.
- yugiohdan6, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3they probably want to ship it with Duke Nukem Forever *sarcasm*
- dotnetnoob, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6except Open Office is a piece of crap. i rather use WordPerfect than that POS OSS pile of stinkin' *****.
