- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -8/+29We have to stop the world's biggest "DRMer", Apple!
Down with Apple DRMs! Apple's AAC file format is locked down so you can only buy an iPod to play your music and nothing else ever will. Zune is not the only culprit here, we have to stop the worlds biggest "DRMer" too.
Yeah digg me down zealots, but its the truth! - mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Agreed. This is like harassing an employee at KFC for killing the chicken.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Erhm, piracy, and being against DRM are two seperate things. I buy my musically legally (what a novelty), but am against DRM.
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Yeah, fine, we can all rant against Microsoft and Apple for putting DRM on their stuff, but think about it. The choice for them is to either put DRM on the files, or have no files at all. The *real* problem here is the media companies that think they have to force Apple, etc to put DRM on the files or else. These media companies are the ones at fault. They need to see that assuming all their potential customers are criminals is not such a good idea. Until we can convince Sony, BMG, et al, that DRM is a bad idea for everyone, the middle-men will have to put DRM on files they "sell".
Nobody in the music industry wakes up and says "I know, let's put fewer restrictions on our music!". No, they always default for trying to tie it down even more. It's really a fear of losing control. Unfortunatley, Apple and Microsoft can't really do much about the music cartel's fear of losing control. Apple pushed it hard to get $.99 per track. - mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12well there's nothing wrong with AAC, I encode all my albums in it.
It's AAC-protected files that sucks ass...which is why I have only bought one iTunes song in my life. - alleyoopster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11you have my digg
Bring down the evil empires! - HanSolo69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Day Against DRM is good. but adding the word "Zune" and still linking to the DbD site doesn't make this any different then when it was posted a couple of weeks ago.
- gyrfalcon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I don't think anyone has to be worried about the Zune... Keep fighting against DRM though!
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9People SHOULD buy music, *****. How else are they going to keep putting out material if nobody buys them? There's a better way...buy the album at an indepedent record store, and convert it to mp3, AAC, or whatever type you prefer/
- eppler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5CCTV = Closed Circuit Television, usually security cameras
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Why dont they attack Apple?" - Magadass
They have, by protesting outside Apple Stores for one thing.
Sorry, no vast anti-Microsoft conspiracy here. Move along. - Himself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5its not enough to not-buy the product. inform apple you would have purchased an ipod were it not for DRM. It'd be more effective to send a scan of the receipt for the alternate portable music device you did buy ;)
- replica, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This has already been on the front page.
http://www.digg.com/tech_news/October_3rd_Declared_Day_Against_DRM - Travelsonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"By supporting dbd, you are proving that this is a minor technical issue that should only be worried about by nerds."
Wow, this statement is so irrational that I dunnow how to properly respond.
Prehaps by saying that you "prove" only trhat you hate DRM by supporting that site, the rest is ad hominem flamebait. - Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3why do people keep dissing on the zune when apple has pretty strict DRM themselves? that article did't even say anything in specific about the zune.
- atari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Check out our logo for the Down with DRM video contest associated with this--we certainly haven't forgotten about the iPod.

(And yes, agreed that Apple should not be spared in the least in the fight against DRM.) - Escamillo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4bgoodknight, it's attitudes like yours that brought DRM into existence in the first place. If we really want to get rid of DRM, we have to get rid of the notion that it's fine and dandy to obtain music, movies, video games, software, without authorization (which usually means "payment"). If an entire generation didn't buy into the, "Digital media has no intrinsic value, so it's ok to pirate!!", then the media companies would ease up on DRM.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3what's a CCTV camera?
- BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I know I remember my mom wanted to take all of her songs from one hard drive to another so I dragged and droped them on to my creative MuVo2 mp3 player and it dident work. Stupid DRM.
- Himself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no. the choice is give consumers want they want or inflict the contrary on them. One is good business... one is something else.
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is no reason to put anything that skinks of DRM on a user hard drive.
And for anybody who does, I really don't care to hear them whining about it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Sorry guys but I don't think this will make any difference. I also think that you need to find something better to occupy your time with - DRM will NOT go away because you want it to.
I'm offended that there are so many CCTV cameras in stores but they're there for a reason. I can't expect them to go away just because I want them to. The same applies to DRM - it's there to protect the people that bring us this stuff. - xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks for sharing
- stoffe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2> well there's nothing wrong with AAC
Well, there is, actually. It is a patent encumbered format[1] with an extortion fee, just like MP3. This not really concern the average user, but it's still a very bad thing to be using the format. Software patents are seriously hurting anyone besides MS and Apple-sized companies, and even they are getting hurt now and then. Do not support this practice, do not use patent encumbered formats. Thank you.
1. http://www.vialicensing.com/products/mpeg4aac/licenseFAQ.html - cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Mr BrownCoat, A new day a new DRM crack - Saw 3 today on digg, or was it 4. I'm glad I can purchase DRMed music and convert it to mp3. My file is now secure and backed up, and I can move it around or share it. We all did the same thing with records, tapes and cd's. Add to it these diggie files do not sound all that great so the record co. should relax...this DRM thing will pass...and talking about stealing and this hack are not one in the same...
- andrew311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't wait to start my own *meat* space!
:P - pucosk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mmm, on my birthday, isn't that nice.
- nogoodreason, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Amen to that.
- darkseer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To all those who would give up your rights for a little bit of convenience, I point you to Mr. Franklin. I think he would say you deserve neither your iPod or the music. You are giving up the fundamental right of ownership. Shame on you.
"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security."
-Benjamin Franklin - Magadass, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Why dont they attack Apple? They are the gods of DRM, I dont get all the biased towards the Zune when Apple has been doing it since the released of ITunes! I smell fanboys!
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Who out there is actually stupid enough to believe they will still be in posession of their downloaded media files (DRM'd or not) in fifteen years, and be able to play them.
Magnetic media is v-o-l-i-t-i-l-e. It goes away. Every hard drive will fail. Every media type will be replaced. Go ask your mother whatever happened to her old eight tracks. Find a 10 year old floppy that you can still run.
And I submit that DRM'd files will become useless even faster than your "real" mp3's. I give 'em five years - tops.
Get real. - xqb4dpx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1on my birthday too!
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8I'd buy one of those 80GB iPods, except...AAC and no FLAC. Screw 'em.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Just another lame excuse to launch an attack on the Zune.
If people dont like DRM, go DL music from a free site or DL some podcast safe music. Its just as good as the crap from the music stories and its not DRMd. - anphanax, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6I don't know why Apple and Microsoft would put DRM in their products unless they had to, since it does irritate potential customers.
I know it's fun to go after Apple (in particular, to rile up annoying members of the fan club that post the same thing over and over on Windows forums), but they're just playing by the rules they have to. I don't think Apple's financials would be too good if they stopped the DRM. I'm fairly confident that would be a breach of contract with somebody... - alleyoopster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You want to bring down apple DRM?
Yes, of course you are right. The only way that we are going to make a difference is by not putting our hands in our pocket and handing over cash to companies such as Microsoft and Apple. This is where our power is, in not buying. They are both power hungry monopolies that are loosing track of what is important - there customers. I don't use any products from either company even though I have worked for Microsoft for 10 years previously. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6This has nothing to do with this article, but October 3rd is my birthday.
- alleyoopster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Playing devils advocate a bit here - there are plenty of artists that are not so opposed to sharing music. They actually think it is a good thing. The artist aren't losing so much money from p2p, it is the middle men all trying to get a slice of there pie and you can see just how much they are taking from the profits of one CD for example. They are all doing very well thank you. It is worth doing a little research on artist opinions on this and see what side the bread is buttered. Just google a bit, one example is http://www.janisian.com/article-internet_debacle.html
- Neoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When it comes to Apple not being able to afford iTunes Music store without the DRM, remember that eMusic sell mp3s for 22p as opposed to 79p (sorry for all american readers, but this really got me when I saw the figures.)
I think apple may be slightly cheesed off by the fact that when Spiralfrog opens it's doors, all music will basically be DRM free except for the fact that it won't play on ipods :P I don't mind this sort of DRM, not because it attacks apple, but when you get something for free, you really cannot complain. At the end of the day it is your choice to download something for free. However, when I buy a cd, I expect to be able to do what I like with it as long as I don't give copies to others. I can make a tape to play in the car, and I can rip it to my computer. Finally, if I get bored of it, I can destroy/delete all copies of it, and give/sell it to someone else. The same system currently exist with console games, if a new copy of the same game comes out (lets say NHL2006) I can then sell my older copies of the game to buy the new one. - eddie69, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2China Central Television. Its the Chinese propoganda TV network.
Actually he meant closed circuit tv http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closed-circuit_television - Travelsonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"protect the people that bring us this stuff."??
Judging by the behavior of the **AAs, this is not exactly the truth, - diggn_it, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7You want to bring down apple DRM?
Then Dont Use Itunes! Im sick and tired of people bitching about how "evil" apple is because they use DRM. If you dont like it, dont buy their product. Simple as that. People buy from DRM'd music not because they are computer illiterate, but because they ike the convinience of not having to schlep down to the one remianing tower records 30 blocks away or want some non indie music. - daines88, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4EDIT: Please digg down, no idea how I posted this into here. Was supposed to go on the exploding IBM story. Sorry
- fulldecent, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2defectivebydesign.org sucks. it is run by people that will never be able to talk to the general public. By supporting dbd, you are proving that this is a minor technical issue that should only be worried about by nerds. So no, my mom does not no about oct 3.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4DRM FTL
- elf586, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1DRMs dont work, the main reason is that they give us the encrypted file, but they also give us the decryption code...
i am sure after the majority of people hit the 4 or 5 transfer limit on their entire collection people will begin to strip the DRMs off of them if they havnt done so already, its only a matter of time before people realize that DRM are bad for everybody.
i am sure if microsoft had put zoom out with NO DRM on their files people would be flocking over to their service.... - diggn_it, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2comments thing times out. sorry. digg this down.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4I still dont know why people pay for music. There is a real way around DRM, just download it off p2p or by other means. Pretty simple really.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+3Yeah, you kiddies keep proving the MPAA and RIAA right about what a bunch of thieves you are. That'll show 'em!
