- brstilson, on 12/02/2008, -8/+168Obama is really going to be the first truly technology-literate president. It seems like he really "gets it" as far as things like the internet go, or at least, he's putting the right people in charge. It's really kind of strange. We go from a President who doesn't read newspapers and fumbles around with an iPod to a President who is posting videos on YouTube and trying to get the secret service to let him keep his Blackberry.
- mreade, on 12/02/2008, -5/+83Good, let's "keep the bastards honest!"
- epohs, on 12/02/2008, -2/+52Which is the intention of democracy of course. The required transparency has just been subverted for so long that we are forgetting this. It looks like Obama is making a lot of really great choices so far.
- Cglass, on 12/02/2008, -10/+50=( but how will I be lied to now..??
- Darkspam004, on 12/02/2008, -7/+45How bizarre. What if this guy turns out to be the real deal? Not just copyright reform, and [possibly] protecting net neutrality...but what if we end up with a president of the people that IS for the people?
- vwwally, on 12/02/2008, -0/+37Bush knows all about the internets. Ted Stevens told him how to use the Google.
- d2002, on 12/02/2008, -5/+41They'll find a way. Have some faith in your government.

- psyjoniz, on 12/02/2008, -3/+32i really wish i didn't feel so strongly to say this : don't get your hopes up.
- breadfred, on 12/02/2008, -0/+29I heard you are descended from a cabbage.
- Hellman109, on 12/02/2008, -1/+25FYI: Its a common saying here in Australia "keep the bastards honest!" is generally refering to politicians, where we call them bastards and liars in one sentence.
Because its true, they are lieing bastards (another favorite Aussie saying, most often directed at your best mate) - HonoredMule, on 12/02/2008, -0/+21The cabbage did not deserve that insult.
- brstilson, on 12/02/2008, -0/+21What a great comment. I believe I shall send you an internet.
- brainflakes, on 12/02/2008, -4/+23Well hold on he's not even president yet!
- supradave, on 12/02/2008, -4/+22Technically, "We the people..." own the copyright of anything that the gov't does. Therefore, it's not copyrightable. In my not so informed legal opinion.
- mreade, on 12/02/2008, -0/+17I know, that's why I said it in quotes in case no one else understood that it's a popular saying here :)
- Sonixunite, on 12/02/2008, -0/+16I am now educated.
- FTWmovin2canada, on 12/02/2008, -0/+16Too late, hopes are up, we're just waiting to be disappointed.
- chromerium, on 12/02/2008, -0/+16It's a common complaint. Thats why we have DingoBaby (tm) insurance here. They're very popular.
- breckinshire, on 12/02/2008, -3/+19Yeah, but in this case, I'M being catered to. Let me enjoy that for a while, it's never happened before.
- patdennis, on 12/02/2008, -5/+20The president elect is not part of the government, that's why he can apply creative commons.. Come January everything created by his office will be public domain (or classified).
- charm803, on 12/02/2008, -0/+14You shall receive it not later than Wednesday!
- Kwinti, on 12/02/2008, -0/+14It would arrive faster, but all that downloading is clogging the tubes.
- patdennis, on 12/02/2008, -1/+14I was thinking the same thing samichx. Anything created by the government is automatically in the public domain. I haven't looked it up, but I figured this applied to any .gov domain.
I guess the question remains weather or not "The Office of the President Elect" is an actual part of the government. - BxBoy, on 12/02/2008, -2/+15maybe.. just maybe..
- LoopyChew, on 12/02/2008, -1/+14*CREATIVE* Communist.
If you were planning on making an attack on Obama, a little wordplay could probably earn you a couple more diggs. - Anand999, on 12/02/2008, -0/+13Items created by the U.S. government can't be copyrighted. In the case of change.gov, maybe the fact that the site was created by a non-government 3rd party and then hosted by a government server means it is copyrightable, but I don't know...
- SpinningHead, on 12/02/2008, -1/+13You're typing words, but they make no sense. Perhaps you should read the article.
- linagee, on 12/02/2008, -2/+14Does Bush even have a web page?
- ryanonfire, on 12/02/2008, -0/+11Another common Australian saying is: "Bankers are wankers." Which rings more true today than ever before.
- kurtismccartney, on 11/09/2009, -5/+15Wait, the government can copyright things now? (Creative commons is a licence system applied to copyrighted works)
I genuinely believed that governments ( and religious bodies) created public documents, as in public domain and free to all citizens (and the world) without a shred of limitation. - rreadysetno, on 12/02/2008, -4/+13Gotta love the comons.
- Fordi, on 12/02/2008, -1/+10http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vws9fTtQgz4
"Contrary to the rumors that you've heard, I was not born in a manger; I was actually born on Krypton, and sent here by my father, Jor El, to save the planet Earth."
The man himself thinks you're worthy of satire. So, ah, good luck with that. - HonoredMule, on 12/02/2008, -0/+9That's like worrying that your government is catering to educated, informed people while trying to give everyone the best possible opportunity to join that favoured demographic.
The only people to suffer would be the ones wedded to their ignorance.
(And no, I'm not calling everyone who cares about internet freedom educated and informed...this is just a metaphor, not a direct statement.) - Stevo23, on 12/02/2008, -1/+10"Keep the bastard honest" should now be all Obama supporters' new slogan. Lets make sure he doesn't forget who put him there and why.
- linagee, on 12/02/2008, -1/+9Will it redirect to change.gov on the inauguration day?
- ik5pvx, on 12/02/2008, -0/+8for a freaking moment I read that as "OUT source government"
- patdennis, on 12/02/2008, -0/+8From Wikipedia
.gov (pronounced "dot-gov") is a sponsored top-level domain restricted for use by government entities in the United States. The .gov domain is administered by the General Services Administration (GSA), an independent agency of the United States federal government. The URL for registration services is http://www.dotgov.gov [1] - patdennis, on 12/02/2008, -1/+9The president elect is not a part of the executive branch. Until January he is not part of the government.
- OneLess, on 12/02/2008, -1/+9For all the people who keep saying the President-elect is not part of the government, that's not technically true. The Presidential Transition Act allows the President-elect to request and use resources in order to aid his transition into the White House, so while he doesn't have any constitutional authority, his office is recognized by the government through legislation and considering that he got the .gov domain, it would not surprise me if this is all being done through government funds.
- Fordi, on 12/02/2008, -3/+11Thread stupidity level ... too high ... can't resist ... urge to mock....
Ok, first, brstilson: You're probably right; Obama does seem comfortable with his tech toys. So does "Sweet Jimmy", the dealer down the street from me. I still wouldn't let Sweet Jimmy near my technology laws any more than I would let Obama, without further evidence of actual understanding of how tech works.
Second, Barackalypse: Kennedy was in office for a hot minute before he got people on the moon; Obama's not even in office yet. In fact, as President Elect, Obama's already done more by this point after his election than any other has. Not that, with your user name, I expect your conversational output to include both Obama and rational thought, but hey.
Third, psyjoniz: I'm sorry, but I really just have to facepalm at the implication that the moon landings were a hoax; at this point, that's an idiotic and indefensible position to hold; there's no evidence of fakery, and there's pretty solid evidence that it actually happened.
Lastly, brainflakes: Fine point. Got nothing to mock you over, so good on that. - tinkafoo, on 12/02/2008, -5/+13Can you imagine Bush doing this?
- kurtismccartney, on 11/09/2009, -2/+9Are they going to work like Red Hat and charge for support? Hold on, BRB, Taxes. LOL
Guess freedom isn't as free as OSS/GNU. - ImOscar, on 12/02/2008, -1/+8I did read the article. That's my problem with this site. I think .gov sites should be reserved for actual government entities. If it's producing content that's not in the public domain don't give it .gov
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -4/+11Yes, she is.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/171/375043569_601fd ... - magus_melchior, on 12/02/2008, -1/+7Well, it's not technically under the office of the President, so Obama's stuff isn't necessarily public domain-- he's just giving his administration the best start possible. Since he also resigned his Senate seat last month, he's a layperson waiting for January 20, so all of the stuff produced under his watch are automatically copyrighted. The CC licensing is a great PR move and a way to ensure that the public knows his plans before he takes office. Imagine Cheney or Wolfowitz agreeing to this level of scrutiny.
And Bush might not care about public-license stuff like CC, since for-profit businesses are likely to turn their noses up at it. -
