I don't know why... - azsupra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8 "Being chemically similar to glass, it also happens to shatter like glass"
"We currently have a limited supply of odd-shaped large & small samples of Aerogel for sale."
Yeah I think this company is just trying to make bucks off of some clumsy lab technician's accident. - Dolphinese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I ordered some a year or two ago for as a friend's birthday. Be VERY careful with the stuff. I showed off its strength to some coworkers by piling book after book on top of it.
Of course, static electricity built up between the aerogel and the desk. Trying to remove it from the desk put enough shearing forces on it to break it. It's very strong, but extremely fragile at the same time. And once you've got it in tiny pieces, trying to wipe your hands clean is nearly impossible. (Soap and water will do the trick.)
Just be very cautious with it and you'll have a wonderous toy for a long time. - gfw123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Come on people, no Aerogel PC case mod yet?
Digg it. - gfw123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Aerogel picture goodnes..

- acontorer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As usual, you can read a fair bit of background on the subject at Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerogel
- falcyn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Oh boy... this is the same company that sells, according to them, highly radioactive uranium.Uranium illegally mined in the Congo, which may or may not be illegal to own.
- Ryan229, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It says it melts @ 2,200 degrees F, but it protects crayons under 3,000 degree F heat? wtf, cool stuff though.

Aerogel jackets - rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Aerogel shatters... into millions of peices... so 90% of those ideas above wouldn't work.
and Aerogel is NOT soft. suits, mattresses, etc = useless. - maninthecold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2cool, maybe I should invest in aerogel considering that it's more expensive and more useful than gold.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As cool as it seems... there's no way I'm paying $30 for what is, in essence, nothing.
- zezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That website read like a "Happy Fun Ball" ad.
- gnalakalaciath5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1can't wait 'till there are aerogel cars...
and firesuits...
and mattresses... - stoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what about an aerogel powerbook? what if the next processor is made out of it!?
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My dream is closer to fruition: snowball fights with spheres of aerogel.
- V-Spec, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2man, bob lazar and his company are awsome

- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Imagine this... a car where everything is made of aerogel. Can you imagine that? With a V8 you could accelerate to 60 in less than 3 seconds!!!
- merdeisel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this stuff is really cool.
- saikojay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1aerogel cars....
nice I wonder how it would be if we have aerogel cars.
It's going to take a long time until various products are going to made from aerogels and even then I bet it's going to be expensive like hell... - theloweman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank god! Ive been getting my areo gel illeagaly from over seas...
- nuxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Wonderwomen was way ahead our her time. ! Did you now her invisible jet was made of Aerogel"
now if only her costume worked the same way! ^_~
that said, united nuclear is a really cool site. - gol706, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, we know the cost isn't in the shipping.
- Nuknuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can I eat it? Is it poisonous?
Sarah Lane crushed one at Screensavers. - TheDarkTipper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want some now.
- capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*Snorts another line of aerogel*
- adelmand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Make your own:
http://eetd.lbl.gov/ECS/aerogels/saprep.htm - akatrito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1" Due to its microstructure, Aerogel is a powerful desiccant, rapidly absorbing any moisture in your fingertips when held. This usually leaves some dry spots on the skin that disappear in a short time."
it absorbs moisture. therefore, no aerogel cars.
sorry to crush all your dreams. >:} - FlyingAvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> They have a brick sized magnet that will pick things up from across the room. Hide it on your person, walk into a computer lab (or, better, the local surf n' play) and watch everyone's monitor go haywire. Or sit down next to someone you don't like and try not to laugh as their hardd rive is possibly damaged.
Or burst into riotous laughter when the person pins himself to the metal door frame while trying to enter said computer lab. - furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It sounds like many of you dont understand the difference between an insulator and a conductor... This would not be good for 'dissapate'ing heat...it is an insulator...it will hold in heat like a winter coat. Do you know what happens when you wear a winter coat on a hot summer day? Do you want that to happen to your $600 CPU?
- wardrive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So... uhm why am i paying 30$ 99.8% air?
- Double-Z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It has been possible to buy samples of Aerogel for over 3 years.
The first thing you do is squeeze it, then it shatters.
Very interesting though. - stuffhappens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Aerogel in the hands of Diggers - a solution looking for a problem
- DeeB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Are there any electron microscopists that are willing to lend out an autoclave used to prepare biological samples so i can make a couple blocks of this stuff ... pretty please with a cherry ontop =D
- bubblesculptor, on 12/20/2008, -0/+0why would this prevent usage as a car?
just because the material itself absorbes moisture does not mean that you can't put a coating or other layer around it to keep the moisture out. it wouldn't be a 100% aerogel car, but it could be used for certain components. This is of course after further advances in the material come along to produce at lower prices, etc... - vickyrock1, on 08/23/2008, -0/+0i like ur information.......
for more detail about nitrogen you can visit......
www.n2cars.blogspot.com - greentofu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wonderwomen was way ahead our her time. ! Did you now her invisible jet was made of Aerogel
- bndocksnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i can't imaging any practical use for an odd-sized sample. this stuff is unlikely to be useful if it cannot be arranged in a flush manner to create a larger piece, and with it's melting point, it would prove difficult to shape and smooth.
- msprout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"

Aerogel can be made to be hydrophobic. Aerogel cars are still a possibility. :) - ZMorek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I'm not mistaken United Nuclear is the same group that the guy at www.periodictabletable.com got a lot of samples.
- IggyPop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty Effing Cool.
- scott1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I herd about that company before.
I never bought anything form because I don't FBI searching my house
+digg anyway - Simply_J, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What no aerogel beer can insulators? Bah. No Digg.

Now thats asking for trouble if you ask me... - Brak710101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if you could make procs out of this stuff. Its like glass, and is heat resistant...
- grayson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. That stuff is amazing. Just - wow.
- bani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"now"? you've been able to buy this for ages off ebay. you almost can't get away from it, there's so much of it for sale.
