Notably, these two:
* Available for immediate use on demand by the system without human intervention
* Functional and ready for service
I'm going to guess that "online" in this context means dumb terminals connecting directly to the database server, which was fairly common in the 70'sand 80's. Dumb terminals supplanted punch cards in the 70's, so this slide show is a sales pitch to companies still using punch cards.

- DeskFlyer, on 07/25/2008, -1/+1It's like subliminal advertising, but without the seizure.
- salvisa, on 07/25/2008, -1/+0In 1975, the word "online" meant something completely different than it means now. Back then, "online" meant that a device or system was in a ready state. For example, a printer that was "online" was ready to receive printing instructions from the computer it was connected to. When it was done, it went "offlne".
Also, "virtual storage" may sound modern, but if I recall, that was basically RAM (as opposed to the then-common magnetic tape reels).
It's a cool set of slides, but if you tried to describe the web and cloud computing to a bunch of IBM engineers in 1975, they would have smiled and gone back to their punch cards and sliderules.- TylerM, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1Dude slide rules ROCK!
