- faddat, on 10/12/2007, -16/+139@parker: as a resident of Seoul, I agree with you wholeheartedly! While I'm not a fan of US imperialism in the Middle East, I've never been more thankful to have US troops present where I live than I am right now. The trouble with NK isn't that they have weapons-- lots of nations have weapons.
The trouble is that Kim Jong Il is a PSYCHO! This is the guy who kidnaps directors and actors to make movies for him. This is the guy that hasn't ever been outside of an Ivory tower, and who commands a massive cult of personality.
While I don't honestly think that I'm due for a vaporization any time soon, the north is without a doubt quite scary when you live so close. - parker, on 10/12/2007, -8/+128i've lived in south korea for 2 years and i've been surprised to find that south koreans aren't too worried. the north probably won't attack because, yes, they would be crushed by the us, south korea, japan and maybe china too.
that said, they really do have a crazy dictator running the place so you never know. if they did attack it would do more harm to the us than make hi-tech stuff more expensive. major conflict here would drag the two world largest economies into war, the us and japan, and it would very likely destablize the entire world economy. so it is a threat to be wary of. - atomicpoet, on 10/12/2007, -14/+70/insert Team America World Police quote

" I was nineteen years old when the musical Cats came to our town. I couldn't wait to see it. After the show I was asked if I wanted to go meet some of the performers backstage. Man, I was thrilled. But when I got back there, they were drunk and out of control. Rumpus Cat and Macavity kept feeling up my leg. I tried to leave, but, Rumpleteazer held me down, and... I was raped by Mr. Mistoffelees. " - wonderboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45This only works with people who think logically though.
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43konspence: It's Kim Jong Il. That is, iL. Not Roman numeral two.

Last I checked, the war (endless war on a CONCEPT, of all things, may I add) that Bush sent us into has been one of the most successful wars (in terms of casualties, not accomplishments) in American history. You go tell a WWII veteran that 2500 is the worst number of deaths ever on the planet, and he'll smack you upside the head and lecture you about D-Day, or ANY of the MANY number of battles whose casualties really WERE in the tens of thousands.
I don't like the war either, but our generals and U.S. military have done an excellent job preparing our troops and keeping them alive. Only losing 2500 soldiers after four years of war is something to be proud of. That's only 1.73 American deaths per day. Compare that to the Korean War's 54246 US casualties, amounting to 48.09 deaths per day, or WWII's 418500 casualties, coming up to 306.37 deaths per day. The only other time with a comparable death rate was Desert Storm, with a count of 525 casualties and death rate of 2.26 U.S. deaths per day.
I hate the war, but you can't discredit the oustanding job that our generals and military commanders have done. You can hate the war, and you can hate Bush, but give our military the respect it deserves. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -19/+55"While I'm not a fan of US imperialism in the Middle East, I've never been more thankful to have US troops present where I live than I am right now."
while Im glad that you, as a member of S. Korea's youth, is actually grateful for the protection that my nation is giving to yours, I would advise you to cut the "imperialism" BS. Our military is bringing to Iraq the same thing we brought to your nation in the 50's. You could just as eaisly be living in Kim country, starving to death, instead of Toyko-lite with high speed internet. Go ask your grandfather about so-called American "imperialism" and see what he thinks. - Joe091, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Why the hell would you want to nuke ANYONE? I hope that never happens anywhere for the remainder of the history of planet Earth. You realize real normal people actual die when that happens, right? And many more are maimed, diseased, and disfigured for years to come. Innocent people. It's not a videogame. How would you like that to happen here? It would kinda suck, don't you think?
Oh, and Russia would not send anything our way if we did, for some unexplained reason nuke NK. They might get pissed, but the only way they would ever nuke us at this point is if we sent something directly at Mother Russia. Hell, they'd probably be happy because NK would start buying more weapons from them. - godulous, on 10/12/2007, -7/+36theres an analogy for this
M.A.D.
stands for mutualy assured destruction, by the time their ICBM is even on its way, we will have 50 others knocking on their door. they will not use it because they know theres nothing stopping us from bringing our arsenal of tens of thousands of nuclear warheads back out of retirement and slap a postage label for korea on them. - knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29Since Pearl Harbour was struck by ballistic missiles and all....

Just a tad less perhaps, just perhaps. ~130 deliverable and and double that (being generous) stockpiled with no viable delivery mechanism. Scaremongering at it's finest. - tuna1, on 10/12/2007, -22/+47Ah, finally a blame Bush-for-something post.
- The_Decryptor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27"The United States has enough nuclear weapon power to blow the entire planet earth into a mist of space dust, 300 times over."
Sure they do.
"All the explosives mankind has ever created, nuclear or non-, gathered together and detonated simultaneously, would make a significant crater and wreck the planet's ecosystem, but barely scratch the surface of the planet. There is evidence that in the past, asteroids have hit the Earth with the explosive yield of five billion Hiroshima bombs - and such evidence is difficult to find. It is, in short, insanely difficult to significantly alter the Earth's structure with explosives." - thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29I wasn't serious.
(I can't believe I had to point that out) - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33"While I'm not a fan of US imperialism in the Middle East, I've never been more thankful to have US troops present where I live than I am right now."
America has been heavily involved in South Korea for over half a century and yet we haven't at all made it part of an "empire." Maybe you should rethink the "imperialism" charge while you're living in a country has been a beneficiary of our foreign policy. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+40*****.

- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25Well they launched a missle over Japan like in 1998.
- synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23The M in MAD stands for mutual and I doubt if the destruction of the United States is assured in the event of a NK-US conflict.
- NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22They have a very large army in terms of head count, but it's very poorly fed, and even more poorly led. They could go on a rampage in Seoul for a week or more, but they don't have a prayer of holding out longer than that against even Japan's miniscule "self defense force", let alone the South Korean army. It also wouldn't surprise me at all if China had at least a dozen agents capable of offing the little elvis impersonator immediately on a signal from Beijing.
-jcr - noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -22/+40Evidently, your username isn't quite accurate.

I like how you bring up the "Republican" issue on the missile defense. It seems to me that Clinton and the "Democrats" managed to dump tons of money into the missile defense as well.
Personally, I think that a missile defense is needed but will take much more time and money to perfect. Imagine trying to hit a missile traveling a thousand miles an hour... It's not so easy; especially if you're trying to take it head on. Maybe in a few years and after "half a trillion" dollars more we will perfect something regardless of which political party is in control and feel a little more safe. - thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -13/+29Why would anyone want to attack us? We have never done anything to anyone...
(-_-) - falcon707, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Yeah... but we still have Jack Bauer!
- Joe091, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16They will not launch a missile into America. I would be willing to bet money on that. They might launch one over Japan or just somewhere into the Pacific, they've done that before, but I highly doubt they would test one into America. I mean, The U.S. would be at the limits of the missile's capabilities, that means it would actually have to land here. That's somewhat worse than when they flew one OVER Japan.... and that was pretty bad.

i'll be moving to hongdae (홍대) in august. can't wait till i live less than an hour from the dmz! been there? it's a scary place. - radu79, on 10/12/2007, -22/+37U: hellogoodbye48

Anyway, nothing to worry about, Albright went over there for champagne and caviar and didn't seem to have a problem with him. Plus Hans Blix cleared them of having any WMDs, so sleep tight. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/nation/200303/kt2003030417272311970.htm

Kim Jong Il: So rong, Earthrings! - cryonix, on 10/12/2007, -13/+26@Nightblade "What if when the mothership landed, out came thousands of 100-foot-tall native american indians?"
i giggled to myself, then took offense, being a Native American Indian. but who cares, no one ever cares about the Indians anymore till you loose some money at a casino, thats when you care. - adodaro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I agree. The weapons alone don't seem much of an issue; it is very unlikely that they will target the US. A single strike --- while deadly to their target --- will only see South Korea, Japan, the US, and much of Europe act in response against them.
The problem is Jong and his ridiculousness. Brainwashing all of the North Koreans and forcing them into a life of seclusion from the rest of the world. Look at how well South Korea is doing in terms of commerce and technology (broadband capital of the planet) and contrast that with the political exile of the North Koreans who do not know how the rest of the world is. Having that many people under such complete control is the real scary thing in this scenario. - amoeba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I heard if a North Korean citizen tries to escape and deflect from NK, their entire extended family is put in jail.
That sucks. - indirect, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Anybody know if this Alaska thing is true?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Yeah... this article is a bit less...controlled and says that the missile found in alaska was most likely not north korean and possibly is from WWII
http://www.americanfreepress.net/03_17_03/North_Korean_Missile_/north_korean_missile_.html - mhmm, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20Not a good time to live in California =
- dukeinlondon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17You don't get it : the real problem is Iran. They have oil you see ? Next is Venezuela.
- KingMoses, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"Your going to destroy the nuke with anti air missles? The nuke would blow mid air and rain radioactive death over whatever you blew it up above. Great move there!"
It's better than giving it the chance to start a fission reaction, dumbass. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Translation "Waaaa I hate America waaa, I'm full of impotent rage and irrational hate waaaa"
Call a freakin waambulance for that guy already.
"I can't believe that a country which refuses to sign nuclear non-proliferation treaties, is in flagrant violation of those they have already signed and headed by a religious fundamentalist is allowed to continue to develop and build more nuclear weapons. This country has broken more UN treaties and conventions than any other in the world and has been a consistent violator of international rights."
Actually that's Israel. Over 70 resolutions and counting. - noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15With the psycho dictator they have, it's possible that he doesn't even care, or even worse has been drinking his own coolaid and thinks that we can't harm him. With anyone sensible in power it wouldn't be scary, but he's just downright unfathomable in the way that he's brainwashed his people.
- sjgmoney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Hans Brix, why you gotta bust my balls?"
- ciphergoth, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15@morganm - what? Blix never cleared anyone of having WMDs. But he didn't find any in Iraq ...
... because there weren't any. - MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16We all know whose fault this is: Crab People.
- mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11You are an idiot. Seoul is in south korea.
