- jsmithers, on 05/26/2009, -1/+23Well, speaking as a mobile developer, access to an immediate roughly 50 million customers (that's now, at launch), is undeniably attractive. Especially considering people can make money off not just apps coded in multiple languages (Java, C++, Widgets (web run time), Flash) but also ringtones, themes and wallpapers. This is offers more potential buyers an a much wider range of products, than that of the Apple Store.
HOWEVER, as usual with Nokia, the devil's in the implementation. Currently it's a touch flaky, slightly hard to find stuff and so on (more here: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/9535_The_ ... ). They also REALLY need to allow S60 Python (PyS60) apps in there, as they are MUCH easier to code than say C++, but with similar power - though PyS60 support has been promised. But these are teething troubles which Apple has suffered greatly from too in the past, so before we get the claws out for Nokia I suggest we give it a little time.
Also, FYI for Americans: Nokia though not very successful Stateside is EXTREMELY successful in the rest of the world. Several hundred million Nokia S40 (i.e. non-smartphone) handsets get sold each year, and they are by far the biggest smartphone manufacturer in the world.
Nokia's Ovi Store is very exciting because it will be available on S40 too - this means one's market place (e.g. if you create Java apps, themes, wallpapers, ringtones) will be absolutely HUGE. And even on S60 it will be several times the iPhone customer base.
So Nokia, iron out the wrinkles please! - Zique, on 05/26/2009, -2/+14With Qt free and Symbian being the software for some 45% of the smartphones out there, I can't figure how this could go wrong. There's a massive market for this.
"Ovi" means "door" in Finnish, btw - sensor, on 05/26/2009, -1/+8Have you seen the economy?
- jsmithers, on 05/26/2009, -0/+6Yes, and not only that, Ovi Store will be on S40 too, which is by FAR the largest mobile platform in the world, selling hundreds of millions of devices a year.
- GodsTwin, on 05/26/2009, -0/+5You both fail.
- thelimopit, on 05/26/2009, -0/+4You can conjure ovaries in your head? I'd see an anatomist.
- turdburglar90, on 05/26/2009, -2/+5Ovi means 'door' in finnish
- jsmithers, on 05/26/2009, -1/+4You could have said exactly the same 1 day into the iPhone App Store, so your comment means little, if you're being comparative.
- glui2001, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3I was thinking "Ovulate" myself there
- TheRohan, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1Ha! Those comments cracked me up! Have you guys checked the API bridge?

- serif69, on 05/26/2009, -1/+1This explains how the Caps can afford a $124 million, 13-year deal. Nokia owns all the rights.
- hardeep1singh, on 05/27/2009, -1/+1its available on all current Symbian devices, just refresh your download.
- Amorn, on 05/26/2009, -2/+1Have you seen other mobile phone companies profit dropped 90%?
- parttimejobs20, on 07/18/2009, -1/+0yes OVI is really suitable Name...
- seltaeb4, on 05/26/2009, -9/+6Are they selling eggs?
- atropus32, on 05/27/2009, -4/+1Nokia might sell lots of phones but, like myself, many are the generic business offering and recipients of such phones aren't going to go out looking for applications for the thing. Apple sells iPhones to people who want iPhones - they own them. They'll spend money on getting them to have the apps they want. That's why the market is different and this is going to be the next dog for Nokia.
- superkendall, on 05/26/2009, -5/+2The customer base is very large no doubt, but it remains to be seen how many people will even use the store much less buy things...
As a mobile developer myself I'm dubious at the moment until I can see results. - ofenza, on 05/26/2009, -4/+1*finished
