- sockpuppets, on 11/30/2008, -1/+16My phone already does this when I call my wife.
- doiveo, on 11/28/2008, -1/+10No mention of which communication standard they are using. If they went proprietary and not something like Zwave or Insteon then this is a non starter.
"Nokia's platform will run the open-source Linux operating system, meaning that third-party manufacturers that make fridges and televisions, will be able to build compatible technology into their devices at minimal cost."
Sounds open but proprietary to me. - keraneuology, on 11/30/2008, -0/+4I saw a documentary about this... apparently the house has windshield wipers for its sensors when you get in the tub and will try to lure you into a trap with the smell of bacon. It also has a Pierce Brosnan accent.
- Jarama, on 11/30/2008, -0/+4"Nokia Home Control Center is a solution based on an open Linux based platform enabling the home owner to build a technology-neutral smart home that can be controlled with a mobile phone, using a unified user interface. Nokia Home Control Center supports the most common smart home technologies, including Z-Wave as well as enabling the incorporation for proprietary technologies. Thus, it allows third parties to develop their own solutions and services on top of the platform, expanding the system to support new services and smart home technologies."

- slezzzter, on 11/30/2008, -0/+3New builds will likely be the primary consumers of this technology. Most people don't take their old appliances to their new house.
- Schmich, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2"It is not yet known how much the Nokia Home Control Center will cost when it goes on sale towards the end of 2009."
The control is just one cost, then you have to get the parts you want to control...I really do hope they use Zwave or Insteon so that more products using either of these standards are getting made. I'm still on my planning phase on using LinuxMCE and I must say Zwave and/or Insteon products are not easily found.
Must be quite hard getting new products on the market if you want to be everywhere. Different countries have different volts, socket design and legal wavelength spectrum. - hardeep1singh, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2Sounds open but proprietary to me.
Seems like you don't know how Nokia works.. - RyomaNagare, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2How is this better than having house server, and access it through data service or regukar phone lines to operate the house.
As a constructor, I can't wait for a time, when adding domotics to a house won't cost as much as it does today. - birdman14, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2you tried, and that's all that really matters.
- anteyekon4myst, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2It's not being distributed by Rogers in Canada is it? I bet you the unlimited evenings and weekends means you wont be able to use your house until 9 pm......bastards!
- birdman14, on 11/30/2008, -1/+3if anyone has the pull to make this happen its nokia. Does 40% worldwide marketshare mean nothing to you people?
- birdman14, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2thanks for bringing nothing to the table!

- dreicher, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but Nokia has nowhere near the pull to make this happen. There is no way they are going to get all the major CE manufacturers to standardize on their technology and unless they decide to start manufacturing their own CE devices it's not going anywhere. Also, how often do people replace refrigerators and TVs?
- RobotBuddha, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1People replace their refrigerators and tvs when they feel there's a need to. Right now the need, more often than not, comes down to if it's broken. There's a chance this might create a new need. Even if, realistically, there's not a huge probability of that happening.
- dreicher, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2"...where everyday systems and devices are connected to the internet, allowing the home owner to monitor and activate them remotely using their mobile phone."
I'm going with TCP/IP. On a side note what does what Nokia's platform will run having anything to do with the cost of implementing functionality into end products? - doiveo, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1thanks for the research!
- counterplex, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1sudo prepare steak dinner
- RobotBuddha, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1Mmmm.....inexplicable bacon.
- slymcherrypick, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1Nokia is a world giant in mobile technology and nothing less than a great technology is expected from it. This is so awsome, you can expect controlling whole of the house by a small mobile... great. http://www.knowtheworldaround.com
- nbluth, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1Send command - prepare steak dinner please
I can't wait - Pushkin, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1http://letmegooglethatforyou.com/?q=domotics
- duckley, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2Bound to fail due to total ignorance about manufacturers' business models.
What they really need is a set of open standards, which allow ANY web-browser access to ANY appliances' features, not some sort of open-but-proprietary (me-too) system. - ericjorgensen, on 12/04/2008, -0/+0"Nokia has signed an agreement with energy company RWE to work on building compatible systems that can be operated remotely by mobile phone or through a computer."
Seems like they're already making it happen - Princeamor, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1Uhhh... yea like if I want to worry about hackers breaking into my home now.
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -2/+1what about when you text a command but send it to the wrong house.
When you are drunk. and horny.... - inactive, on 11/30/2008, -1/+0this post reeks of b.s. ... what the hell are domotics? it seriously sounds like you made that up... or did you mean robotics? .... hmm ... Well, im sure a fine constructor capable of setting up a home server like yourself doesnt make spelling mistakes often... oh wait... way to sound smart though.
- mrjigglyfly, on 11/30/2008, -4/+2There's a 'remote' chance this might take off?
- dreicher, on 11/30/2008, -4/+2Agreed. As with my above comment...Nokia is nowhere near able to make this a reality. LG on the other hand makes phones, refrigerators, TVs and just about every other CE device and are in a much better position to bring something like this to market successfully.
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -3/+0Sweet. Now the government will be able to see into our homes by watching when we sleep, when we eat, and when we jerk off in the kitchen sink.
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -6/+1If Nokia wants to own this, they should get LG with them up in this bitch because LG is light years ahead.
