- jay314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For you winamp guys, I use:
http://winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=42256
Either that, or some cheap earplugs from walmart drown out fans/ac/neighbors/whatever.
There *are* still people using winamp right? Sheesh. Crazy kids. - alexdagrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does every Mac-related post necessitate a Mac flamewar?
- Canned_Heat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using white noise to sleep for years, and you don't need a computer or cd to do it. Simply turn an FM radio to either end of the FM frequency spectrum (or any other place on the dial where there is no active stations heard), and viola! white noise. Don't us AM - it's subject to all kinds of electrical noise.
- rawc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's a pink noise sample:
http://www.luxevivant.com/samples/DigitalPinkNoiseSample.mp3 - pfaff31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1some info on pink noise
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1/f_noise - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1get the whole collection: (white, pink, blue, and even brown noise)
http://www.dogstar.dantimax.dk/testwavs/ - YourParadigm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So when is someone going to write a program that produces the brown note? :)
- Inara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to use Noise at my old job to drown out my co-worker's quiet singing. I LOVED it.
- hmvh1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how the hell does that static allow you to concentrate better?
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why is it that PC users get all in a tizzy when an app is Mac only? Get over it. DIGG DIGG DIGG!!!
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.hemi-sync.com
Hemi-Sync® is an audio-guidance process that works through the generation of complex, multilayered audio signals, which act together to create a resonance that is reflected in unique brain-wave forms characteristic of specific states of consciousness. - hollywoodcole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"wow. what's the big deal here folks?
get a cheap battery powered radio from a garage sale for 2$. tune to a station that you can't pick up. portable noise."
Why when you can do program it on your computer? - Fallout75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just how many MACs do you find in a business work environment?
Most of us use PCs. Where is the PC version? - superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no windows compatibility, no digg, srry. Would have been cool if it was for windows.
- silverdragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow this really works
- Gl4di4tor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol at idiggeverything ^
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I smell a pet rock, folks.
- whatsthatsmell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0holy cow, i cranked up this pink noise and all that i could hear was the pink noise, no more annoying fan noise. just some more annoying even louder pink noise
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The hum of the 1,000 computer fans around me at work is analogous to this app.
dignot. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no windows version? :((
anyway, there's always noisemp3.com in case of emergency :P - FrostyTheDMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PC/Linux version! Damn you inventive Mac Users.... damn U!
[FROSTY]The DMan - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Does this work for you? I fail to understand that creating more noise is going to block noise."
Perhaps its analagous to blocking someone's vision with a white light?
And noise is better than music in some cases because it doens't distract you. It is completely uninteresting untextured input, but blocks out other inputs. - portis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So you are replacing noise with noise!? HUH?!
- atenharmsel, on 02/02/2009, -0/+0http://digg.com/software/Free_pink_noise_generator
- dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is awesome. It's hard to even hear myself typing right now. My roommate's abnormally-loud headphones? Can't even hear them. I think I have a new favorite Mac app.
- graemee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hope this works, the winds from Wilma are whistling through the loading bay door and the kids in the daycare next door are screaming and crying, it's nap time. I find loud Rob Zombie usually drowns them out, but the phone always rings it seems.
- wireplay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1zonk3r - I did feel strangely hungry after listening...
- idiggeverything, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If they are annoying I just hit them in the ***** face. That will make them stfu.
- pierre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why on earth would anyone listen to static? this is so stupid...
- donnikhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wait, i'm playing it on my powerbookg speakers and all i hear is really loud static? am i going deaf or something/
- ne_mo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This program has saved my sanity. I have been using it with my 2 month old baby every day. I don't know why but she falls asleep 5 minutes after I turn it on.
- RadicalBender, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Works already. I can barely hear my running dishwasher and dryer.
- hollywoodcole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"There is no source code for noise."
There is but you have to download the mac version (dmg), its packaged with the app. - Whomever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.sonaretechnologies.com/babble.html
Babble is a much better technology for office noise. It doesn't put you to sleep like white noise can. - Carlox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, you could use, as I do, audacity, then generate 30 sec of white noise. then play it on winamp moving your equalizer as for 1/f (it is a down pattern through the frequency in 16K@-20db) and let it run in loop. Works for me.
- capran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't get it, why would you want it? At first I thought it was going to use my microphone to sample the ambient noise, then pump out anti-noise (noise thats 180º out of phase) out of my speakers to cancel the ambient. But it just makes white and "pink" noise. Yay.
So how about the anti-noise idea? - hadak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0powerbook scores again! booyah! in yer face ;p
- alias2211, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This does work, but not as intended. Instead of helping me concentrate directly, it creeps all of my coworkers out so much that they don't even make eye contact me, much less actually bug me with a question.
- mutant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is no source code for noise.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pink noise sounds like static + rain. White noise sounds like a steam bath. But I guess it does block out other sounds.
- ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's a White Noise generator in Audacity. That's an open source app for OSX, Linux, and even Clunky ol' Windows.
- snyy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0last time I used pink noise was to test if my 5.1 speakers were all conected.
- capajc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0poster shoulda' said it was Mac only to prevent PC people from wasting their time. Can't digg what I can't try.
And no jokes about time wasted using Windows, please. It's too easy. - atenharmsel, on 02/02/2009, -0/+0http://digg.com/software/Free_pink_noise_generator
- NetCaptive, on 02/18/2009, -0/+0When flying on an airplane i use special headphones to drown out the sounds of the airplane.
When sitting in the cube farm i can use sounds of a jet airplane (a.k.a. "pink noise" http://media.putfile.com/Pink-Noise) to drown out my cubemates.
Go figure! - t35t0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp to the human ear seems like the same thing!
- CadMasterAdam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what about a software based noise cancelization program.
you guys know what i mean right?
mic imputs sound. software inverts and offsets it, and pumps it back out through the speakers, and viola, no noise.
pimp! - iangelov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is very interesting idea! A little search with Google and I found some excellent tools:
http://uazu.net/sbagen/ - windows and linux versions - I like it
http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~pelzlpj/whitenoise/ - only linux version. This app generates white noise only. - nashdawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My office pipes in white noise like A.C. You don't really notice its on until it goes off. Then you can hear people typing etc.
- cancoillotte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The group Whitehouse have produced many great pink noise tracks. Well worth checking out.
