- shortkid422, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I've got the same combination on my luggage!
- guitardvark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11and yet the ufo hacker is probably going to get life in prison
- synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Funny how they're coming down harder on the guys who 'hacked' Paris Hilton's data from lexusnexus than these guys. Stealing the passwords of high-ranking FBI officials is a potential national security threat, wheras doing the same with Paris is just another .avi in your porno folder.
- pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I believe another article explained that he did it so that he wouldn't have to keep tracking down people with higher access permissions whenever he needed to access something. I'm pretty sure he had legitimate access to the systems but it was a headache to get that access whenever he needed it. In other words it was a shortcut.
- Leo55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Is it me or the gov's sysadmins are lazing around on the security?
using 2 free and most likely open sourced tools to get the passwords of the director of the FBI?
is the director's password : 123456? - Tiabin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Hmm... So if it wasn't for personal gain... why did he hack? I half-expected the article to end claiming he did it to help them identify security holes, but I was left with a "to be continued" sort of feeling.
- penwen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I see your schwartz is as big as mine!
- Daisuke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Once we identified the breach of security, we took quick and appropriate action to neutralize its impact."
God, if the FBI said that in any other situation, it would mean "We killed the mofo." I'm kinda suprised they didn't at least ship him off to a secret prison hidden away in Europe anyways... - techmonkey4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah this article doesn't have nearly as much pertinent background info as is needed.
From http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/07/06/national/main1779905.shtml:
"Colon was hired to work on the FBI's "Trilogy" computer system. He claimed that bureaucratic barriers hampered him from performing even routine work on the system, and that he only used the purloined user names and passwords to speed his work" - Jabari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4More context: Colon (who was a BAE contractor) was provided the original password that allowed him to hack the system by another FBI employee - http://www.smh.com.au/news/Technology/Computer-consultant-hacked-secret-passwords-of-FBI-director-others/2006/07/07/1152175738962.html And it wasn't until Colon gave the password to another co-worker that he got busted - http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=32897.
Even more context: Colon was working on the Trilogy Case Management System, a huge FBI IT-modernization program that began in 2001. It ended last year, after the bureau spent US$581 (and by ended, I mean died... FBI director Mueller killed it). http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/05/AR2005060501213.html. The lead on the project was SAIC.
Which is all to say: for whatever reason, our government can't quite get it together (don't get me started on the shenanigans at DHS!)... - fiv3isaliv3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yay for rainbow tables.
- grendelwraith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"What am I surrounded by A**holes?" "SIR!"
- swanofnever, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4May the schwartz be with you.
- Fredx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hardly a hacker just cause he stole some people's SAM file ...got caught aswell....shameful
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A "hacker" is just the term the media use to describe anyone who does something on a computer they shouldn't.
How many people do you think would understand your post? - williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Goffy is right.
These people are our Stasi. Fully 90% of what they do is worthless snooping. And the FBI is the least corrupt and most competent of the bunch and crap like this happens at the FBI. Imagine how awful DEA and ATF are! - goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is why america is a peice of *****. When some hacker across the world does something to us we give him the max, But when a piece of ***** no good FBI agent does it, he gets off without a scratch. Every single FBI/CIA/SECRET service all need to be investigated and renewed. im sick of this curruption. That guy deserves to goto jail as long as any other person that comits a computer crime.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I understood it just fine, and I'm 18.
- Danblade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Your third link is no longer avaliable 11 hours after your posting. (washington post) To think of 30,000 computer systems for $600 million (an average of $20,000 per computer!) those have got to be some nice machines! (smh.com...) Wish I made that sale...!
- neouser99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1or they realized this guy should be working in a different division if he was this good. the FBI payed off the courts and transfed this guy to some underground bunker where he gets all the toys that he could possibly want.
- br8k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1So I wonder what incriminating evidence the hacker found in Robert Mueller's hard drive that he wiggled his way out of a jail sentence? The house detention and $20,000 fine just seems like a smoke screen.
FBI got PWNED I smell blackmail as the get out of jail free card. - cappa1983, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0He deserves to go to jail, not for getting the passwords, but for being an absolute idiot and screwing up his career and job.
