- Bob042, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30I don't think I would want that lane-swerving technology. What if you drive down this road? http://curtis.corlew.com/hosting/road_stripe3.jpg
Does it just automatically inflate the airbags and throw you into a ditch? - PhonicUK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21"I Can't let you do that Dave... The risk is unacceptable..."
- gurudevg, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23I don't think I'd be comfortable with my car having that much control over itself - swerving itself back into the lane and all. What if the road is incorrectly striped or the driver deliberately moves out of the lane to avoid a collision?
- paul2, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22I'd rather people would learn how to drive instead of relying on fancy computer systems.
- mephitix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13FTA: "Nissan officials said people probably wouldn't buy such an intrusive car, but the technology may have commercial uses such as in delivery trucks and taxi cabs."
- tuxidomasx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15"Nissan said drunken driving caused 611 fatal accidents in Japan last year." (article)
"The [United States] Transportation Department said that drunken driving deaths rose 2.4 percent to 17,941 ...[in 2006]." (http://www.thestar.com/News/article/217814)
now i know Japan has fewer people than the entire USA...but still...611 seems awesomely low compared to the USA. go Japan! - mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Stupid *****. Get in that car, and then tell me what you think. I'm sick of ignorant asses judging a car by internet rumors.
- thecosmicpope, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Beaten to it by Mercedes which will preform an emergency stop faster than the driver can react to if the car approaches an object. The same system in the Mercedes can also be used to drive the car at normal speeds, the car will automatically brake and come to a stop when the car in front stops, but the driver can override the system simply by using the pedals.
- EmperorAwesome, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I'm hoping the gas pedal-lifting part will confuse the hell out of tailgaters.
"Bwuh? I'm dangerously close to an object in front of me? But I'm always this stupid." - Louisd11, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13I love my Jeep.
In my Jeep it dosen't have traction control, it does have abs. And its real wheel drive, and theres no bells and whistles in it either. Digg me up if you have a car where you have to drive it yourself, not a computer. - skyfire1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8It would good for people that want to drive drunk.
- ripitinhalf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8In most European countries (and Japan) the punishment for driving drunk is very severe- in the US you just get a slap on the wrist (comparatively)
- mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -6/+13My Prius has Vehichle Stability Control. It's supposed to help in case of a crash to align the car to the road better, but I ***** hate it. You drive down the freeway, and if there's a rough patch you start doing these zig zags, I wish I could turn that ***** off.
And it's supposed to be the biggest safety feature since the seat belt...bull *****. - thecosmicpope, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I'd imagine the system can be disabled and the drivers input overrides the safety system.
- robojerk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Blue Screen of Death!
- thecosmicpope, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Selective reading. "in response to the warning."
- Brianguy2000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7does this mean there will be more crappy drivers on the road that will rely on their car saving their ass instead of learning how to drive?
- manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7This just means more rear end collisions.
- munkianis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5too judge dreddy
- kd1s, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Whether you like it or not, autonomous vehicles are coming. This is the forefront.
You do realize that modern jet aircraft pretty much fly themselves, right? Why not let cars do the same. They can avoid collisions faster than we can. - KLowD9x, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3There is too much of a risk of malfunction. Humans will always be needed to operate this type of machinery when there are other humans on the same road operating similar machinery. Now, if the trucks had their own lanes where everything was connected and had a common logic system, it would be a very efficient system; but when the human element is introduced, the logic systems would freak out.
But, cars are essentially disconnecting the drivers from the road as it stands. I am a Volvo technician and the accelerator pedal is no longer connected by a cable, but it is electronic, the steering is electronic (but it still has a shaft), and the brakes are electronically controlled (first seen by Mercedes). I hear that this is all for the new OBD III standard which will report your driving statistics to a central system for multiple uses.....supposedly including automatically issued speeding tickets.
As for semis....they are just now getting automagic transmissions, haha - socokoolaid, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I, for one, am surprised computerized and computer assisted driving is still in such an infantile stage. I kinda expected autonomous semi's and the such by now. I guess I'll check in again in 10 years.
- phlogiston99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That and the stroller pushing segway lady is the end of modern society. Soon our cars will fill with hardening foam, apply the brakes and call 911 if we close our eyes more than 0.7 seconds while saying hhhhhhhshhhhh.
- darthjure, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Digg! That had me laughing for 5 minutes!
- longbow486, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3two simple words - bad idea
- Mothh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Which somewhat makes sense, since a car is more essential to Americans. Look at the size of the U.S. and look at the size of Europe/Japan. Hands down we are more dependent on automobiles.
- bIuebonics, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i'd rather drive my car with my computer. :P
- zdiggler, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I have a old Caprice Classic Police car got like 180K on it. I paid 5g for 5 years ago and still running good. Its got Cloth Seats ( 100x more comfortable in all Weather then leather and good on long distance driving too) Power seat, I had to installed Cruize Control my self ( Geek ***** ), ABS, Heated Mirror, Air Bags, Power Windows, OBD1 engine that easy to fix, way to monitor engine status on laptop. Rear Wheel drive and I live in snow country, with good Snow tires and know how to drive No Problems.
What else do you need in a car?
Oh yeah, its come with Stab Proof front seats and a full size spare tire. - smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1it has nothing to do with the size of the U.S. most people don't drive across the country or state to get to work. it has to do with poor public transportation in suburbs and even cities.
- carpespasm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1what happened to that 3000 dollar car they were talking about a bit ago?
- MrSteamTank, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It all depends on the country you're in. The better the drivers are the more careless the pedestrians are. It's always relative. In my home country of Uruguay(Latin America) pedestrians are very cautious crossing the street and with good reason.
- manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4I'm getting buried so it looks like I hit a nerve. I must have found the idiots in the middle of the street. Good. Stay out of the middle of the street. When there's a red hand in the direction that you want to walk keep your ass on the sidewalk. And please use the damn crosswalks!
- diablo75, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Oh, c'mon already with the auto-pilot button and the flying cars and all that stuff from back to the future!!! I want it! :D
- RandoTheKing, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I think it would be extremely hard to get used to the car moving the gas peddal up, especially for no reason if it didn't know any better... I expect to see a lot of people randomly stopping on the highway :)
- blaaguuu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2The warning seems like a great idea... the automated stopping - Not so much.
- corvairkid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I remember reading about a guy who did figure out how to turn off one of the driving aids on his Prius. Unfortunately, Toyota decided to wire it all together so you lose VSC, ABS, traction control, etc at the same time. What's worse is that it also supposedly ***** up the electronic braking system so not something you really want to be screwing around with.
- marty0577, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A self aware car??! I don't think so, what we need is people who know how to ***** drive, srsly....
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1exactly. just like seat belts cause people to drive more recklessly and increase the incidence of traffic accidents.
- kinerry, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is a horrible idea, when you are in panic mode, this isn't going to help
- zdiggler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Those Electric Steering system are weird, Its hard to get used to driving on dirt roads with pod holes.
- rheaume, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Awesome! Driving a gas guzzling tank finally pays off for you, congrats.
- bIuebonics, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1seriously, they need to get started working on an infrastructure for self-driving cars...
- spect21, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0its too early for this kind of stuff, especially when testing for something that inaccurate.. oh and if the sensor is broken.. bye bye car
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Only when you're close to hitting something (how close, it does not say).
Sounds like a great way to get rear-ended to me, I'd rather have the choice of sharp breaking or running it out to the side with a little less braking. - TimmyGreenlaw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The important thing is not to stop questioning
- alphaone, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1In Soviet Russia, Car Drive You
Guess this made it to Japan. - WilfredoNetz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0When I chased after money, I never had enough. When I got my life on purpose and focused on giving of myself and everything that arrived into my life, then I was prosperous.
- corvairkid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Even with worn out brakes, a driver with good reaction time is still going to stop in a shorter distance. This is why you shouldn't drink & drive, drive while tired, or use a cell phone/other distraction while driving.
Still no excuse for not inspection your brakes and tires at every oil change. Especially if you do a lot of city driving. - corvairkid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0"Now, if the trucks had their own lanes where everything was connected and had a common logic system, it would be a very efficient system"
We've had that technology for quite a long time. It's called a railway. - corvairkid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0INSPECTING your brakes.
Sorry. Shouldn't post on Digg while tired. -
